Aqua-20 Goldsh Kit
The Aqua 20 Goldsh Kit has been specically designed to make establishing your own aquarium as easy and straightforward as possible. Inside this User Manual you will nd step by step instructions on setting the aquarium up together with advice about ongoing maintenance to help ensure you keep your sh healthy and happy. Please ensure that you read the Safety information below before you start setting up your aquarium.
SAFETY
Setting up your aquarium
1. Before lling the aquarium with water ensure that it is placed on a solid surface that can support the load
2. Only suitable for indoor use
3. Unplug the lter, heater, lighting and any other electrical equipment from the wall socket before working on the aquarium or in the water
4. Never shorten or lengthen the electrical leads
5. Never allow the pump to run dry
6. Attach the light rmly and do not immerse it in water
7. If a cord or light unit is damaged do not use. It will need to be replaced by the manufacturer, its service department or an electrician
8. Carefully read the User Guides supplied with the individual accessories for usage and safety advice before setting up your aquarium
Special Safety Instructions: These appliances are not intended for use by person (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliances by a person responsible for their safety. Special care should be taken with the use of electrical equipment by or near children.
STEP 1 - Positioning
STEP 2 – Preparation
Consider carefully where you want to position your aquarium, taking into account the following:
• Position away from direct sunlight to prevent algae growing
• Position near to an electric supply so that you can plug in equipment but far away enough to avoid danger of splashing
• Position away from sources of heat and cold eg radiators and draughts
• Position somewhere that is easy to get to for feeding, maintenance, etc
Rinse your aquarium and enclosed accessories thoroughly with clean tap water. If you are planning to add gravel, ornaments or any other aquarium decoration these should also be washed thoroughly. You should not use any soap or detergents and always ensure you use a perfectly clean bucket.

STEP 3 – Adding gravel
STEP 4 – Adding the lter
STEP 5 – Adding water
STEP 6 – Decorating your aquarium
STEP 7 – Complete lling the aquarium with water
Cover the bottom of the aquarium with a layer of gravel that has been washed thoroughly. If you are going to decorate your aquarium with live plants, add between 5 - 7cm depth of gravel, if you are not going to add live aquatic plants, 1 – 2cm is sucient.
Live aquatic plants give the aquarium a more natural feel and help to keep it healthy. Speak to your local aquatic store to nd out which plants are suitable for use in a goldsh aquarium as some plants require warmer water.
Place the Aqua-Flow 50 in the aquarium and use the suction cups to attach it rmly to the side. Ensure that the pump is correctly submerged and located at the right height (check Aqua-Flow 50 Manual for details). Do not plug in your lter at this stage.
Fill the aquarium slowly with clean tap water. Place a plate or saucer beneath the water stream to prevent swirling of the gravel.
Add water until the aquarium is half full.
When the aquarium is half full of water add aquarium plants and any other decoration such as articial plants, bogwood, ornaments and rocks. Ensure that your aquarium decoration is thoroughly rinsed in clean tap water before adding to the aquarium.
When decorating your aquarium take care to provide your sh with places to hide. Also aim to hide any equipment.
Complete lling the aquarium with clean tap water.

STEP 8 – Treating the water to make it safe for your sh
STEP 10 – Choosing your sh
STEP 9 – Running your aquarium before adding sh
STEP 11 – Adding sh to your aquarium
Tap water contains chlorine and chloramines which are not healthy for sh. Add Aqua Health enclosed to remove chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals. Check the bottle for correct dosage instructions.
Add Aqua+ to the aquarium to build up a population of benecial bacteria. Check the bottle label for correct dosage instructions. Fish live in their own waste, so it is essential to keep the water clean to ensure your sh remain healthy. Whilst the lter will eectively remove solid waste (sh excretion, uneaten food, plant debris) it is essential to include live bacteria to remove ammonia – ammonia is toxic to sh. Fish excrete ammonia through their gills, also any solid waste that decomposes will release ammonia.
When buying sh ensure they look healthy, with no obvious signs of injury or disease.
Monitor the temperature of the water in your aquarium using the thermometer included. If your aquarium is in a heated room the temperature will be higher than if it was kept in an unheated room. Ensure you choose sh that can live in the temperature of your aquarium water. If you are not sure about what sh to buy have a look at the sh on page 5 or ask your retailer for advice.
Connect the aquarium electrical supply, plug in the lter and run the aquarium for a week before adding any sh. This will allow the temperature to stabilise, the water to clear and give time for the lter to build up a good bacteria population. Add Aqua+ every day for the rst 5 days. Check the bottle for correct dosage instructions.
Before adding sh, turn o the aquarium light. Place the bag that your sh come in, unopened, into the aquarium water. This will allow the temperature of the water in the bag to equalise with that in the aquarium. After 30 minutes open the bag. Using the enclosed net carefully remove the sh from the bag and place in the aquarium. Try and avoid any water from the sh bag going into the aquarium as this water may be polluted.
Your sh may hide for a couple of days while they adjust to their new home and feel secure again.

Feeding
Monitor your sh
Keeping the water refreshed
Cleaning
Fish should be fed a good quality diet daily. During the rst few days of being in the aquarium they may not eat. During this time give them a small amount of Hikari Goldsh Staple Food enclosed. If uneaten after a few minutes remove the food using the net. If it is left in the water it will cause water quality problems. After the rst few days follow the feeding instructions on the pack of food. Always remove any uneaten food after a few minutes.
We recommend that you feed pellet foods as it is easy to feed the correct amount.
Watching your sh allows you to spot any signs or symptoms of injury or disease which can then be treated.
To keep the water refreshed carry out a partial water change once a week. To do this replace 20% of the water in the aquarium with tap water which has been treated with Aqua Health, to remove harmful chlorine and chloramines. Remember to add Aqua+ also before adding the new water to the aquarium. Make sure the temperature of the new water is the same as the water in the aquarium before adding it.
Removing water from the aquarium can be done easily with a Supersh Aqua Siphon, simply follow the instructions supplied.
When carrying out water changes this is also a good time to clean. Supersh Aqua Tools make cleaning gravel, glass and ornaments easy. Always take care to use a perfectly clean bucket and no soap or detergents.
Filter maintenance
Check your lter regularly to ensure that it is working correctly. The lter should be cleaned once a week to keep it running eectively. Remove the cartridge from the lter and clean it in some water taken from your aquarium (NOT tap water). Remember to always check the instructions on the packaging.
Monitor water quality
To ensure that the water in your aquarium is healthy test it regularly for ammonia and nitrite as well as the pH level. If there are any problems carry out a 50% water change until the water becomes stable again. Remember to treat the water with Aqua Health and Aqua+ before adding it to your aquarium.
