What is the Transit System Option?
The Transit System is comprised of designated tie-down securement locations attached to the frame of the wheelchair. The Transit System may also include transit tested seating hardware used to secure the seating system to the frame of the wheelchair. The Transit System may be used in conjunction with most wheelchair restraints for those who use a wheelchair as their primary seat in a motor vehicle.
Why did we develop the Transit System?
The Transit System was developed to help safeguard those who use a wheelchair as their primary seating in a motor vehicle. Improper use of straps or other devices positioned around the frame of the chair or through the wheels can damage the wheelchair during transit. The Transit System provides a safe and effective method of securing the chair to the motor vehicle, without causing damage to the chair.
How did we develop the Transit System?
The Transit System was developed in accordance with the ANSI/RESNA test standard ANSI/RESNA WC/Vol. 1. - Section 19. This test standard was designed to promote occupant safety and reduce the risk of injury for motor vehicle occupants who remain seated in their wheelchair during transit. The Transit System was designed for use in conjunction with aftermarket occupant restraints that meet the design and performance of wheelchair tie-down and occupant restraint systems criteria developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers.* Additionally, the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute was utilized to test our Transit System Option.
