General Instructions
Sumner’s Grasshopper pipe dolly enables one person
to quickly and easily move anges, ttings and pipe up
to 40 feet in length, or up to 2,000 lbs (900 kg).
Carefully follow the instructions in this manual to
insure personal safety and longevity of equipment.
The Grasshopper pipe dolly has 3 sliding chain blocks
to connect pipe. Use the chain blocks at the front and
middle of the Grasshopper for shorter pipe. Use the
chain blocks at the front and the back of the
Grasshopper for longer pipe.
2. When lifting pipe, lower the front of the
Grasshopper by lifting the handled end and
inserting the hook on the front of the Grasshopper
into the pipe.
To ensure safest maneuverability line up the center of
gravity for the pipe length with the center of the
Grasshopper wheels.
Instructions For Attaching Pipe
1. With load lying on a at surface, place a wood
block that is between 3 and 4 inches high next to
the load.
CAUTION
Us a sturdy wood block of at least
equal width of the load on a at
surface. Placing pipe on an item that
is unstable or not suited to take large
weights may result in the load falling
causing possible injury.
3. Lift the pipe with the hook and position it on top of
the wood block next to the pipe.
3
4. Wheel the Grasshopper over the load and tilt
forward so it rests on it’s nose. Walk up the length
of the Grasshopper holding onto the frame to keep
the nose tilted forward.
CAUTION
Failure to properly connect chain to
chain blocks may result in load being
prematurely released.
7. Lower the handled end of the Grasshopper, lifting
the front end of the load.
5. Hold the nose of the Grasshopper down by placing
a foot on the lifting hook.
6. Slide one end of the front chain under the pipe and
attach to the sliding chain block hook on the other
side of the Grasshopper. Secure all excess chain
to the chain block to keep it from dragging on the
ground.
CAUTION
The weight of the load on the front
end will cause the back end of the
Grasshopper to raise. If necessary,
use assistance to hold the
Grasshopper down while connecting
rear chain from sliding chain block.
8. While holding down the handle end, line up the
sliding chain block to leave at least a foot before the
end of the pipe.
Slide one end of the chain under the load and
attach it to the sliding chain block hook on the other
side of the Grasshopper.
4
9. The load is now fully supported by the Grasshopper
ready to be moved. Lift the handled end of the
Grasshopper and wheel load away.
Instructions For Detaching Pipe
1. At the front of the load, place a wood block on a
at surface underneath where the load is to be
removed.
2. Lower the handles of the Grasshopper to the
ground so that the rear of the load is also resting on
the ground.
3. Disconnect the chain from the rear sliding chain
block hook and slide chain from underneath the
pipe.
5. Disconnect the chain from the chain block hook in
the front and slide it out from underneath the load.
CAUTION
Be certain load rests securely on
wood block before removing chain.
If the load is not secure it may fall off
the wood block resulting in injury.
4. Raise the handled end of the Grasshopper so that
the front of the pipe rests securely on the wood
block.
5. Hold the nose of the Grasshopper down by placing a foot on the lifting hook to keep the front of the
Grasshopper from raising prematurely.
5
6. The load is now disconnected from the
Grasshopper. Walk back up the length of the
Grasshopper while lowering the handled end.
Position the Grasshopper so that the hook end
is facing the end of the pipe now elevated on the
wood block.
CAUTION
Be careful not to nudge the load off
of the wood block while repositioning
the Grasshopper.
8. Insert the hook into the end of the pipe elevated on
the wood block. Lift the pipe from the wood block
and place it on the ground.
