1. The machine must only be operated by persons familiar with the relevant operating instructions and who have been instructed accordingly.
2. Before commissioning also read the notes on safety and the operating instructions of the sewing drive manufacturer.
3. Only use the machine in the intended manner and never without the provided guards. Always observe the pertinent safety regulations.
4. Switch off the main switch or pull the power plug for threading, changing the reels, exchanging sewing tools such as needle, gripper, needle plate, transport devices, possibly cutter and cutting block, for cleaning and when leaving the workplace as well as for maintenance.
5. General maintenance tasks may be carried out only by properly trained persons in accordance with the operating instructions.
6. Repair work, retrofitting and maintenance may be carried out only by technicians or specially trained personnel.
7. When servicing or repairing pneumatic equipment, the machine must be disconnected from the pneumatic supply. Exceptions are only allowed for adjustment work and tests of functionality performed by specially trained technicians.
8. Only specially qualified technicians may work on the electrical equipment.
9. It is forbidden to work on electrically live components! Exemptions are covered by the EN50110 (DIN VDE0105) regulations.
10. Any retrofitting or alterations to the machine may only be performed under strict compliance with all pertinent safety regulations.
11. Only use our approved spare parts when servicing and/or repairing the machine.
12. It is forbidden to operate the sewing head until it is determined that the entire sewing unit complies with EU provisions.

Before starting the machine for the first time, carefully wipe the machine and remove all rustpreventatives, such as Vaseline, paying particular attention to the sewing components.
Starting up. Lubricating and cleani ng m a c hine
Instructions for lubrication are given in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3. The machine should also be cleaned daily. Material fibres and dust collecting
on moving parts of the machine may cause problems.

The handwheel shaft turns clockwise when viewed from the right.

Instructions for us e
Needles: STROBEL 1669 E Astro, No. 80 – 110
(Usual needle size 90)
Needles and Threads
Thread: Mercerized cotton (such as Gögginger padding yarn 80)
Guaranteed remark!
This machine has been set and sewn off with genuine Strobel needles.
No guarantee can be granted if the settings are modified
for using different needle types.
4.2
The course of thread can be seen from
Threading
Fig. 1. From the spool, the thread passes through the boring on the upper part of the yarn stand, then to the thread guide 216.0505 (according to the thread, through one to three holes), thread tension discs 184.0183, to the front hole in the thread guide 216.0505, then through the eyelet on the needle lever and finally to the needle, where it is threaded upwards through the eye.
4.3
The stitch depth setting knob 444.0322 is clearly visible on the front of the material support arm 110.0205 and easily accessible.
Setting stitch dept h ( Fig. 1 and 2)
1. Turning the setting knob to the left until material support arm 110.0205
touches stop 176.0702 results in the highest position of the material support arm, giving a deep penetration of the needle.
2. Turning setting knob to the right results in lowering the material support
arm, giving a shallow penetration of the needle.
For through stitching, the material support arm should always be in its highest position, setting knob 444.0322 must always be turned to the extreme left until the material support arm hits the stop.

1. Press down spring-loaded stitch adjusting knob 144.0156 with the left
hand. This knob is on the back of the machine head.
Adjusting stitch length (Fig. 1)
2. Turn handwheel to the right until stitch setting knob 144.0156 catches.
3. Turn hand wheel to the left until the number on the hand wheel
corresponding to the required stitch length is opposite to the mark M (Fig. 1). (Click!)
4.5
Class 58-4 (
Device for changing fr om blind stitch to thr ough stitch
Fig. 4 and Fig. 5)
To change from blind stitch to through stitch the cloth bender or presser
181.00047 is equipped with a swiveling supplementary presser 181.0017. In Fig. 4 this supplementary presser which covers the presser 181.0047 has
swung backwards and is out of action, setting the presser 181.0047 for blind stitching.
For through stitching let down the cover plate 113.0004 (113.0005) which is on the front of the head of the cloth support (Fig. 1). Then lift the spring-loaded end of the supplementary presser 181.0017 out of the groove with the finger on the extension of the presser 181.0047 (as shown in Fig. 4) and swing upwards until it catches in the upper groove of the presser extension as in Fig. 5. As a result, the supplementary presser 181.0017 swings forward and the presser
181.0047 is set for through stitching. This procedure is reversed for switching from through stitching to blind stitching.

For lubrication lower the material support arm 110.0205 into its lowest position by pressing the lifting pedal on the stand to bring the machine into its starting position. Then oil according to the lubrication instructions in
Lowering t he m a t e rial support arm t o lubricate the machine (Fig. 2 and Fig. 3)

4.7
Class 58-4 is especially suitable for roll-padding both lapels, sewing in an upward direction (Strobel patent) because of their wide passage space.
Padding instructi ons f or Class 58-4 (Fig. 6 a nd 7)
Fig. 6 show how to pad a right lapel which is sewn from the bottom upwards, working from the lapel break towards the edge, so that the front part left of the material support arm can be guided over the table.
Fig. 7 shows how to pad a left lapel which is sewn in the manner described above, except that the right front is guided through the wide passage space of the machine to the right of the material support arm.

4.8
The blade of the thread trimmer is activated by a rotary magnet, to which an electric release control system (microswitch) is connected. This prevents the machine from starting when the blade is no longer in its inital position. Thus the release control system prevents a possible collision between blade and gripper.
Thread trimmer (Fig. 8)
4.8.1
Removing and remounting of the t hread trimmer drive (Fig. 8)
A ttention!
Switch off machine electrically!
1. Remove plug 297.0197.
2. Loosen the screw 171.0421 and remove from blade 184.0096, spring
161.0056 and disc 169.0022.
3. Loosen the screw 172.0520 on the needle plate clamp 115.0124 and
remove the thread trimmer drive.
4. Installation in reverse order.
Ensure the blade is in correct position on the shaft!

4.8.2
- The thread trimmer drive must be inserted as far as it will go into the needle
plate clamp. Swivel the drive backwards so that there is a gap of about 1 mm between the drive and the sewing head.
Adjustment (Fig. 8 and Fig. 9 )
- The blade of the knife has until about 2 - 3 mm from needle lever, stand
forward, readjust if necessary. Remove clamp 212.0486. Loosen the screws 172.0312 and 175.0301 on the small gearwheel
240.0186 and adjust by turning the blade shaft. Push together gearwheel and blade shaft to the limit and tighten.
- Setting the microswitch 397.0216 and gearwheel 240.0186.
- When replacing the rotary magnet 698.0695, ensure that the tooth gap
between the gearwheels is approx. 0.1 mm.
Ensure free movement of parts!
Fig. 9
Page 23
19 BA_58_A17_161026_en
4.8.3
Replacing the knife ( Fig. 8 and Fig. 9)
Attention!
Switch off machine electrically!
To replace cylinder head screw 171.0421, unscrew it (hold shaft 130.0394 with open-end wrench 5 mm).
Caution: Do not hold onto the rotary knob 246.0188 since the gearwheels can
be damaged!
The nose of knife 184.0096 should sit in the shaft's groove to guarantee the right position for the thread trimming.
Turn the main shaft manually and check the trimming position. (Fig. 9)
4.8.4
The machine should be positioned in such a way as the pedal is stepped back that the distance between gripper and blade in cutting position is approx. 1 mm. For Strobel and EFKA controls, this corresponds to parameter 171, position P2E. Refer also to the sewing drive operating instructions.
