Ultra160 9-Drive Cable Kit
The SCSI Wide Ultra160 Low Voltage Differential (LVD) protocol supports a maximum 160
MByte/sec transfer rate for applications with up to 15 LVD devices, providing that the total
(internal plus external) device-to-host cable length does not exceed 12 meters (approx. 39
feet). The StorCase® Technology Ultra160 9-Drive Cable Kit (P/N DCULTRA160-9KIT), designed to fit the rear panel of the Data Silo® DS400 or DS500 9-bay tower or rack mount chassis,
simplifies and reduces this Ultra160 cable length limitation.
With the DCULTRA160-9KIT installed within up to two DS400 or DS500 9-bay chassis, any
combination of up to 15 SCSI Wide Ultra160 devices can be supported on a single Ultra160
channel, allowing a total maximum external cable length of 12 meters. Without a DCULTRA1609KIT installed in each chassis however, the chassis-internal cable lengths between devices
must also be taken into consideration, thus reducing the maximum allowable external cable
length available.
The DCULTRA160-9KIT includes a SCSI Ultra160 repeater board with internal and external
SCSI connectors, an internal power splitting cable, and a 9-drive internal Ultra160 ribbon cable
with a crimped-on Ultra160 multi-mode (LVD/Single-Ended) terminator (Figure 1).

operation) for SCSI Ultra160 operation.
The Ultra160 5-Drive Cable Kit (P/N S90A100) is also designed to fit the rear panel of the DS400
or DS500 chassis. Two (2) S90A100 cable kits installed within a single DS400 or DS500 allow
for dual-channel configurations.
With the S90A100 kit installed within up to three DS400 or DS500 9-bay chassis, any
combination of up to 15 SCSI Wide Ultra160 devices can be supported on each Ultra160 channel.
The S90A100 includes a SCSI Ultra160 repeater board with internal and external SCSI connectors, an internal power splitting cable, and a 5-drive internal Ultra160 ribbon cable with a
crimped-on Ultra160 multi-mode (LVD/Single-Ended) terminator(Figure 2).

INSTALLATION
(see figure on next page)
1. Disconnect ALL power and remove cables from the Data Silo chassis.
2. Open the Data Silo chassis to gain access to the internal cables and rear panel I/O
connectors. Refer to the Data Silo User's Guide if necessary for information on this
procedure.
3. Remove existing internal SCSI ribbon cable if installed.
4. Verify that ALL devices within the Data Silo chassis have termination disabled.
5. Remove existing chassis rear panel connector(s) if necessary. Save mounting screws,
these will be used in Step 7.
6. Attach one end of the power cable to the SCSI Ultra160 board, attach the other end to
the Data Silo power strip. The position of existing device power cables may need to
be adjusted to accommodate the power cable.
7. Attach the SCSI Ultra160 repeater board to the Data Silo rear panel with the same screws
saved from Step 5, component-side facing into the Data Silo chassis (Figure 3).
8. Connect the internal SCSI ribbon cable to the SCSI Ultra160 board and installed devices.
NOTE: Do not skip connectors on the internal SCSI ribbon cable when connecting
9. Reinstall the Data Silo covers and cables removed earlier.
10. For daisy-chaining multiple Data Silo chassis, verify that the individual external SCSI
cables meet the SCSI Ultra160 (160 MBytes/sec) Specification and that total device-tohost cable length does not exceed 12 meters (approx. 39ft).
