SCSI Ultra2 (LVD) 9-Drive Cable Kit
SCSI Ultra2 (LVD) 9-Drive Cable Kit
The SCSI Wide Ultra2 Low Voltage Differential (LVD) protocol supports a maximum 80
MByte/sec transfer rate for applications with up to 15 LVD devices, providing that the
total (internal plus external) device-to-host cable length does not exceed 12 meters
(approx. 39 feet). The StorCase Ultra2 (LVD) Cable Kit (part number DCULTRA2-9KIT),
designed to fit the rear panel of the Data Silo® DS400 or DS500 9-bay tower or rack mount
chassis, simplifies and reduces this Ultra2 (LVD) cable length limitation.
With the DCULTRA2-9KIT installed within up to two DS400 or DS500 9-bay
chassis, any combination of up to 15 SCSI Wide Ultra2 (LVD) devices can be
supported on a single Ultra2 (LVD) channel, allowing a total maximum external
cable length of 12 meters. Without a DCULTRA2-9KIT installed in each chassis
however, the chassis-internal cable lengths between devices must also be
taken into consideration, thus reducing the maximum allowable external cable
length available.
The DCULTRA2-9KIT includes an Ultra2 (LVD) SCSI repeater board with internal and
external SCSI connectors, an internal power splitting cable, a crimped-on Ultra2 multi-
mode (LVD/Single-Ended) terminator, and a 9-drive internal Ultra2 (LVD) ribbon cable.
NOTE: All external SCSI cables must meet the Ultra2 (LVD) specification (for up to 80
MBytes/sec operation).

INSTALLATION
(see figure on next page)
1. Disconnect all power and remove cables from the Data Silo chassis.
2. Open the Data Silo chassis to gain access to the internal cables and rear panel I/O connectors. Refer to the Data Silo User's Guide if necessary for information on this procedure.
3. Remove existing internal SCSI ribbon cable if installed.
4. Verify that ALL devices within the Data Silo chassis have termination disabled.
5. Remove existing chassis rear panel connector(s) if necessary. Save mounting screws, these will be used in Step 7.
6. Attach one end of the power cable to the Ultra2 (LVD) SCSI board, attach the other end to the Data Silo power strip. The position of existing device power cables may need to be adjusted to accommodate the power cable.
7. Attach the Ultra2 (LVD) SCSI repeater board to the Data Silo rear panel with the same screws saved from Step 5, component-side facing into the Data Silo chassis (see figure on next page).
8. Connect the internal SCSI ribbon cable to the Ultra2 (LVD) SCSI board and installed devices.
NOTE: Do not skip connectors on the internal SCSI ribbon cable when connecting
less than nine (9) devices to the cable.
9. Reinstall the Data Silo covers and cables removed earlier.
10. For daisy-chaining multiple Data Silo chassis, verify that the individual external SCSI cables meet the SCSI 3 Wide Ultra2 (LVD) (80 MBytes/sec) Specification and that total device-to-host cable length does not exceed 12 meters (approx. 39 ft).
