Introduction
The Side-by-Side Rig is a modular rig for stereoscopic recording. This professional tool enables the user to record stereoscopic content with interaxials from 9 cm till XX cm. It uses a
high precision threaded control rod to align the distance between the two camera mounting
tables - this is crucial to achieving the precision you need for quality 3D production.

Please store the Side-by-Side Rig in a dry and dust free place.
Disposal:
Please dispose broken components and devices correctly.
Site of operation:
Do not use the Side-by-Side Rig in ying vehicles like helicopters or similar rapid
accelerating objects. The stability may be lost and the camera-setup can be bro-
ken.
Maximum weight:
Use the Side-by-Side Rig only on xed tripods which are able to handle the total
weight of the complete setup (rig + 2x cameras + 2x lenses).

Mechanical Setup
The Side-by-Side Rig is modular designed. This means that you can use the rig in different
setups with different components depending on the camera model and the lenses you want
to use.
Mounting on tripod - Tripod Plate
The tripod plate (6) is xed in the middle of the basic module (9). The boreholes match to
standard tripod mounts.
At least use two 1/4 inch or two 3/8 inch screws to lock the Side-by-Side Rig secured on the
tripod.
Make sure to tighten the screws and that the tripod is able to handle the total
weight of the complete setup (rig + 2x cameras + 2x lenses)!
Mounting Cameras - Camera Plate
The camera plates (8) are screwed on the rotary table (3) and the non-rotating table (5). To
mount or unmount the camera plate from the table use the Allen key (screwdriver) to tighten
or loosen the screws (e) on the rear side:

Camera xing screw (3/8 inch)c
Camera xing screw (1/4 inch)d

After releasing the camera plate (8) from the table (3) or (5), choose the adequate screws
(a), (c) or (d) to mount the plate on the camera.
After tighten the plates on the cameras, place the plates on the tables (3), (5) and use both
screws (e) to x each camera with its plate on the Side-by-Side Rig.
Make sure to tighten all the screws!

Calibration
After mounting the both camera setups, this paragraph shows which knob is responsible for
which adjustment.
For the ne adjustment it may be helpful to connect the cameras on a 3D-control-screen
during the calibration process.
Interaxial Adjustment
To change the distance between the camera setups, turn the crank-handle (1). The two
tables (3)(5) will move towards or apart.
The electronic counter (7) shows the actual interaxial
7

distance in mm.
Normally there is no need to use the buttons upside on
the counter (7).
Only if the calibration got lost or the set-screw looses
by mistake.
Then move the tables to a distance of exact 90 mm
(middle to middle), loose the set-screw in the setting
ring and adjust the setting ring until the display shows
90,0. Tighten the set-screw in the end.
Before turning the crank-handle (1) be sure
the locking screw (2) on the other end of the
Side-by-Side Rig is loose.
After interaxial adjusting it’s recommended to
tighten the locking screw (2).
Angulation Adjustment
To adjust the angulation - the angle
around the optical axis - turn the
adjustment wheel (4). The counter
shows the changing in degrees.
To avoid a cant of the
screws in the camera plate,
be sure that the screws are
tighten.

Tilt / Roll Adjustment
To adjust the tilt and roll angles use the rotary table (3) for the camera roll and the xed table
(5) for camera tilt.
On each table are three knurled head screws
(a), (b). The silver one (a) in the middle is for
adjustment, the two black ones (b) only for
xing and safety.
The safety screws (b) must be loosen before adjusting with (a).

For a more acurate 3D-result watch the stereoscopic picture coming from the two cam-
eras, while adjusting.
After the adjustment process tighten the
black safety screws (b).
Hints and Tricks
In most cases the adjustment process is much easier, when the cameras are already connected and both pictures are viewable as a stereoscopic picture on a stereoscopic screen.
Adjusting Camera Roll
Search for a horizontal line in the scenery e. g. a forest line, a row of houses or even a skyline, then aim with the camera-setup on the rig at this line.
While adjusting the camera roll look at the stereoscopic screen. When the lines of both pic-
tures are parallel the roll angle is adjusted correctly.
Adjusting Camera Tilt
Proceed as same as for the camera roll. Search a line in the scenery and when the lines in
both pictures overlap on the screen the tilt angle is adjusted correctly.
Adjust the Interaxial distance
Now choose the desired interaxial distance between the two cameras. To achieve a more
stereoscopic impression move the two cameras apart.
For nearer objects or less stereoscopic impression move the two cameras together.
Adjust the Angulation / Convergence
After setting up the camera roll, tilt and the interaxial distance, the convergence can be cor-
reted. Just turn the rotary table until the picutres match the focused object.

Motorization
There are two motorization types available for the Side-by-Side Rig. One for the interaxial
distance control and one for the rotary table. The motorization is implemented by a standard
motor drive as used also for other camera extensions.
Rotary Table Motorization
First the electronic counter must be removed:
Use a 1,5 mm Allen key to loosen the headless screw in the turning knob.
Then pull the knob to remove it.
Use a 2,0 mm Allen key to loosen the headless screw in the ring in front of the electronic
counter.
Then pull the counter to remove it.
Beyond mount the motorizing bracket for the
motor drive.
