Introduction

Thank you for purchasing a StarTech.com USB 2.0 PCI card. Now you can add two, four,
or six high-speed USB 2.0 ports to your computer. With data transfer speeds up to
480Mbits/sec., this card allows you to easily connect and use high-performance USB
peripherals like DVD drives, video conferencing cameras, or high resolution scanners.
USB 2.0 is also backwards-compatible with USB 1.0/1.1, meaning your existing
peripherals will still function perfectly with no additional configuration.

(PCI425USB), or four external and two internal (PCI625USB2I) high-speed USB 2.0
ports

• Complies with USB 2.0 specifications and is backwards-compatible with USB 1.0/1.1

Before You Begin

To ensure a quick and easy card installation, please read through this section carefully
before attempting to install the card.

WARNING! PCI cards, like all computer equipment, can be severely damaged by static
electricity. Be sure that you are properly grounded before opening your computer case or
touching your PCI card. StarTech.com recommends that you wear an anti-static strap
when installing any computer component. If an anti-static strap is unavailable, discharge
yourself of any static electricity build-up by touching a large grounded metal surface
(such as the computer case) for several seconds. Also be careful to handle the PCI card
by its edges and not the gold connectors.

System Requirements

•Acomputer with an available PCI slot (the PCI225USB_LP model requires a low-

profile PCI slot)

• Minimum Operating System Requirements: Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/2003 or

later, Mac OS X or later

• Minimum Processor Requirements:

Intel Pentium II (400 MHz or faster)
Intel Pentium III or higher (any speed)
Intel Celeron (900 MHz or faster)
AMD Athlon (any speed)
G3 (original processor, not an upgrade)

Installation

This section will guide you through the installation of your PCI card and the related
software. Please read through the instructions carefully and complete each step in the
order listed.

Installing the Card

1. Make sure that your system is unplugged and you are grounded.

2. Remove the cover of your system (see your computer's user manual for details, if
necessary) and gently turn your computer onto its side.

3. Locate an empty PCI slot (usually white in color) and remove the metal plate that
covers the rear bracket. You may need a Phillips screwdriver to perform this step.
Retain the screw! You will need it to secure the card later.

4. Gently insert the card into the empty slot, making sure it is firmly seated.

5. Secure the card in place using the screw you removed in Step 3.

6. Put the computer case back on.

Installing the Drivers

If you lose your driver disk, these drivers are available as a free download from our
website. Visit www

.startech.com

and click on the Downloads link for more information.

Windows 98SE/ME

1. Insert installation CD that came with the card into your CD-ROM or other
optical drive.

2. Open My Computer and right-click the icon for your CD-ROM. Choose Explore.

3. Double-click the setup.exe file. The program will now copy the appropriate
driver files onto your system; simply follow the on-screen prompts. When you see a
message stating that the process is complete, restart the computer.

4. Once your system reboots, Windows will detect the new hardware and install the
drivers.

Windows 2000/XP/2003

Windows 2000/XP/2003 includes native support for USB 2.0 and will install the drivers
automatically. Ensure you have the current Microsoft Service Pack installed

Mac OS X

Mac OS X offers native support for USB 2.0. To ensure maximum performance from your
USB 2.0 card, make sure that your version of OS X is kept up to date with the latest
patches and upgrades.

Verifying Your Installation (Windows)
Windows 98SE/ME

1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel.

2. Double click System.

3. Click the Hardware tab.

4. If the card and related components do not

appear with a red x or yellow exclamation
point (!) next to them, Windows has not detected a problem with the installation and
the card should function normally.

Windows 2000/XP/2003

1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel.

2. Double click System.

3. Click the Hardware tab and choose Device Manager.

4. If the card and related components do not

appear with a red x or yellow exclamation
point (!) next to them, Windows has not detected a problem with the installation and
the card should function normally.

Connecting Devices to Your USB Card

When you install a USB device to one of your USB ports, Windows will automatically
detect it and you will be prompted to install the drivers for the device. If you ever plug
this device into a different port on your USB 2.0 card, you will be prompted to install the
drivers again. If possible, you should plug the device into each port on your USB card
and install the drivers for each port the first time your connect your peripheral. Later on,
with the drivers already installed for each port, you can unplug and move your USB 2.0
devices around your card without having to worry about finding your driver disk.
