Introduction
Thank you for purchasing a StarTech.com Fast Ethernet switch. Thanks to dedicated
high-speed bandwidth for each of your devices, your network will enjoy faster response
times and fewer bottlenecks. This Fast Ethernet switch will automatically establish the
fastest transfer speed for each device (10 or 100Mbps) and use its half- and full-duplex
capabilities to optimize your network performance. Each port automatically detects and
adjusts for MDI (straight) or MDI-X (crossover) cables so there is no need for a separate
uplink port.
Features
• Complies with 10BaseT Ethernet and 100BaseTX Fast Ethernet standards
• Migrates smoothly between 10BaseT and 100BaseTX networks
• Capable of half- and full-duplex communication
• Auto-negotiation function determines the optimal transmission rate for each node
• Auto MDI/MDI-X detection allows straight or crossover cables to be used in any port
• Supports store-and-forward switching architecture
• Wall-mountable
• Backed by StarTech.com’s two-year warranty
Before You Begin
To ensure a quick and easy Fast Ethernet switch installation, please read through this
section carefully before attempting to install the switch.
WARNING! The Fast Ethernet switch must be installed and operated in an environment
with temperatures between 32-131ºF (0-55ºC) and humidity levels of 10-95% (non-
condensing). Make sure that the switch is kept away from heating sources and that the
vents at the side of the device are not blocked. Do not place any objects on top of the
device. Make sure that no water or moisture enters the unit. If necessary, use a
dehumidifier to reduce humidity near the device.
System Requirements
This Fast Ethernet switch can be connected to PC computers with Ethernet networking
cards, or other compatible switches, hubs, or servers.
Note: For each device you want to attach to the switch, you will need a Category 5
Ethernet UTP patch cable. StarTech.com offers a wide range of these cables in various
lengths and colours to suit your network needs. StarTech.com also carries a wide range
of Ethernet cards for both PC and notebook computers. For product information, as well

Monitoring Your Fast Ethernet Switch
The LEDs on the front of the switch are the best indication of the switch’s activity.
Troubleshooting
Power LED is not lit.
• Check that the power cord is properly connected at both ends.
Link/Activity LED is not lit when connected to a 100Mbps device.
• Make sure the device is turned on.
• Make sure the network cable is properly connected at both ends.
• Make sure that your network cables comply with EIA/TIA 568 and Category
5 specifications.
If problems persist, power down all devices and disconnect all plugs from the switch.
Wait at least ten seconds and plug the power adapter back into the switch. Then plug the
devices back into the switch and power them back up.
