HOSE TYPES
The rated working pressure of the hydraulic hose must be equal to or higher than the relief valve setting on the
hydraulic system. There are three types of hydraulic hose that meet this requirement and are authorized for use with
STANLEY hydraulic tools. They are:
Certi ed non-conductive — constructed of thermoplastic or synthetic rubber inner tube, synthetic ber braid
reinforcement, and weather resistant thermoplastic or synthetic rubber cover. Hose labeled certifi ed non-
conductive is the only hose authorized for use near electrical conductors.
Wire-braided (conductive) — constructed of synthetic rubber inner tube, single or double wire braid
reinforcement, and weather resistant synthetic rubber cover. This hose isconductive and must never be used
near electrical conductors.
Fabric-braided (not certi ed or labeled non-conductive) — constructed of thermoplastic or synthetic rubber
inner tube, synthetic ber braid reinforcement, and weather resistant thermoplastic or synthetic rubber cover.
This hose is not certifi ed non-conductive and must never be used near electrical conductors.

OPERATION
PREPARATION PROCEDURES
CHECK THE POWER SOURCE
1. Using a calibrated ow meter and pressure gauge,
check that the hydraulic power source develops a
ow of 4-12 GPM/15-45 LPM at 950-2000 psi/67-
140 bar.
2. Make certain that the hydraulic power source is
equipped with a relief valve set to open at 21002250 psi/145-155 bar minimum.
3. Check that the hydraulic circuit matches the tool for
open-center (OC) or closed-center (CC) operation.
CHECK THE TOOL
1. Make sure all tool accessories are correctly installed.
Failure to install tool properly can result in damage
to the tool or personal injury.
2. There should be no signs of leaks.
3. The tool should be clean, with all ttings and
fasteners tight.
CHECK TRIGGER MECHANISM
1. Check that the trigger operates smoothlyand is free
to travel between the “ON” and “OFF” positions.
2. Check that the trigger is set to disengage the grinder
when released.
CHECK HANDLE
Check that the cross handle is securely screwed into the
handle bracket. Remove any oil from the handle.
CHECK ANDADJUSTWHEEL GUARD
1. Inspect the wheel guard for cracks and other
structural damage.
2. If necessary, adjust the position of the wheel guard
by loosening the two capscrews on the guard clamp.
Makesure the capscrews are tightened securely
after adjustment.
INSTALLING AND REMOVING GRINDING
WHEEL
1. Remove and set aside thejam nut from the output
shaft.
2. Position the grinding wheel over the shaft.
3. Screw the jam nut down onto the spindle shaft.
Tighten the nut securely by using two open-end
wrenches, one wrench on the ats of the spindle
shaft, the other wrench on the jam nut.
4. Remove the grinding wheel by loosening the jam
nut.
Never over-tighten the grinding wheel jam nut by
impacting either wrench with a mallet or hammer.
Sufcient torque is attained by handtightening the
nut with two open end wrenches.
USE OF DEPRESSED-CENTER WHEEL
ADAPTER
The Depressed-CenterWheel Adapter (part number
05194) must be used with wheels having a cupped or
depressed center.
CONNECT HOSES
1. Wipe all hose couplers with a clean lint-free cloth
before making connections.
2. Connect the hosesfrom the hydraulic power source
to the tool ttings or quick disconnects. It is good
practiceto connect return hoses rst and disconnect
them last to minimize or avoid trapped pressure
within the tool.
3. Observe the arrow on the couplers to ensure that the
ow is in the proper direction. The female coupler on
the tool is the inlet (pressure) coupler.
4. Move the hydraulic circuit control valve to the “ON”
position to operate the tool.
5. Squeeze the grinder trigger momentarily. If the
grinder does not operate, the hoses might be
reversed. Verify correct connection of the hoses
before continuing.
Note: If uncoupled hoses are left in the sun, pressure
increase inside the hose may make them difcult to
connect. Whenever possible, connect the free ends
of the hoses together.
TOOL OPERATION
For best results, use only STANLEY approved
accessories. They have been designed and selected to
get the most from the tool.
Review the safety precautions given at the front of this
manual before operating the tool.
Remember to grip the tool with both hands at all times
during startup and operation and be sure you have full
balance before starting grinder rotation. Always keep
your body away from the “plane of rotation” of the
grinding wheel.
Always start the grinder with the wheel away from the
work surface. Start hydraulic ow at one GPM and slowly
GR29 User Manual ◄ 11
Page 12
OPERATION
increase ow to a level that produces desired efciency,
but allows the operator to maintain full balance and
control.
Starting the hydraulic grinder on the work with full
hydraulic ow can push the operator off balance,
creating a condition that can cause severe
personal injury.
Refer to the Troubleshooting section of this manual to
isolate other possible conditions that can lower tool
efciency.
COLD WEATHER OPERATION
If the grinder is to be used during cold weather, preheat
the hydraulic uid at low engine speed. When using the
normally recommended uids, uid temperature should
be at or above 50 °F/10 °C (400 ssu/82centistokes)
before use.
Damage to the hydraulic system or grinder can result
from use with uid that is to viscous or too thick.
UNDERWATER MODEL
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
After each use, the movable portions of the tool that
were exposedto water shouldbe ushed with a water
displacing oil, such as WD-40™. Remove any remaining
water and debris as follows:
1. Turn the tool upside down and spray oil inside of the
tool and any moving parts.
2. Spray oil into the On/Off valve trigger slot area.
3. Dip or spray the entire tool.
4. Cycle the tool hydraulically several times before
storing away.

circuit RETURN hose (with female quick disconnect)
is connected to the opposite port. Do not reverse
circuit ow. This can cause damage to internal seals.
• Always replace hoses, couplings and other parts
with replacementparts recommended by STANLEY.
Supply hoses must have a minimum working
pressure rating of 2500 psi/172 bar.
• Do not exceed the rated ow (see Specications)
page in this manual for correct ow rate and model
number. Rapid failure of the internal seals may
result.
• Always keep critical tool markings, such as warning
stickers and tags, legible.
• Tool repair should be performed by experienced
personnel only.
• Make certain that the recommended relief valves
are installed in the pressure side of the system.
• Donot use the tool for applications for which it was
not intended.

TROUBLESHOOTING
If symptoms of poor performance develop, the following chart can be used as a guide to correct the problem. When
diagnosing faults in operation of the grinder, always make sure the hydraulic power source is supplying the correct
hydraulic ow and pressure to the tool as listed in the table. Use a ow meter known to be accurate. Check the ow
with the hydraulic uid temperature at least 80 °F/27 °C.

GR29 CHANGES / UPDATES TO SPOOL & MAIN HOUSING
VALVE SPOOL (ITEM # 55)
The old valve spool (P/N-13781) was replaced with a new valve spool (P/N-73041) in February 2016. The new valve
spool is NOT backwards compatible and will NOT work in older main housings. If you have a tool with S/N-020516107
or earlier and are replacing the valve spool, purchase valve spool P/N-13781. If you have a tool with S/N-020516108
or higher and are replacing the valve spool, purchase valve spool P/N-73041.

MAIN HOUSING ASSY
This main housing change took place in February 2016
Note: If you have an older GR29 with serial number 020516107 and earlier and you are replacing the main housing
assy shown below, you must purchase both a new valve spool (73041) and a new main housing (73311). The old
valve spool is not compatible with the new main housing design.
New main housing(P/N-73311)
used on all models starting with
serial number 020516108 and
higher.
73311
Old mainhousing (P/N-12286)

UNDERWATER TOOLS DEPTH GUIDELINE
UNDERWATER MODELS ONLY
Do not use hydraulic tools underwater that are not
designated as an “underwater” model, or this will
result in damage to the tool.
For underwater hydraulic tools the
applications are broken down into four
quadrants depending on type of tool and
method of operation.
OPERATIONOVERVIEW
PERCUSSIVEROTATIONAL

Hammer Drills and
Chipping Hammers

Tools: Grinders,

sizing guide below
The types of tools are percussive and
rotational, each with different characteristics
allowing for different depth operation. With
percussive tools, the nitrogen accumulator
PSI must counter the increase in ambient
pressure found at lower depths.Since there is
a maximum PSI for percussive tools they are
limited to certain depths. Rotational tools do
not have accumulators and thus are capable
of deeper depths.
The methods are broken into diveroperated
or remote operated vehicle (ROV). ROV’s
can reach lower depths and with an onboard
hydraulic power source that is depth
compensated, can operate hydraulic tools at
depths of thousands of feet. ROV operation
is still limited to the tool, for example a
percussive tool has the same depth limitation
whether ROV or diver operated.
