ASSEMBLY AND MAINTENANCE
1. Apply liberal amounts of cork grease to each of the corks to ensure
that your instrument goes together easily, without tearing.
2. Gently twist the bell onto the lower joint. Always ensure that you
gently twist each piece into place. Do not push them together. If too
much resistance is encountered, apply more cork grease to the
tenons of the instrument. This allows for assemble and will preserve
the joints of your clarinet.
3. Gently twist the upper joint onto the lower joint. Ensure that they keys
of the two joints do not come into contact, as this can damage them.
4. Align the bridge mechanism. The bridge mechanism must be aligned
for the clarinet to function properly.
5. Gently twist the barrel joint onto the upper joint, then gently twist the
mouthpiece onto the barrel joint.
6. Align the mouthpiece by twisting it until the hole in the mouthpiece
is aligned with the back key on the upper joint.
7. Moisten the reed with water or saliva, then place the reed onto the
mouthpiece so that the flat side of the reed is against the mouthpiece
opening. Move the reed up or down the mouthpiece until you see just
the slightest bit of mouthpiece behind the reed tip. Ensure that the
reed is vertical and aligned with the mouthpiece.
8. Slip the ligature over the mouthpiece and reed, taking care not to allow
it to touch the thin end of the reed. Ensure that it is low enough that it
is cover the bark of the reed, not the vamp (the carved part). Tighten
the ligature to secure the reed in place.
Note: The most important part of your clarinet is the reed. When you blow air across the reed, it
vibrates to create the clarinet's signature sound. Great care must be taken to ensure that it is
properly moistened to prevent cracking, chipping, and other damage.
