Recoil • 7
®
The Electronic Speed Control (ESC) and Receiver (Rx)
Steering Port: Where the steering servo plugs in.
Crystal: Determines which channel it will receive
Antenna Wire: Receives the signal from the transmitter
On/Off switch: Powers the ESC/Receiver
Battery Lead: Connects to the battery pack for power
Motor Leads: Connects to the wire leads from the motor
Resetting the ESC
The ESC comes preset and ready for use. If for some reason you should need to reset the ESC, use the following instructions: Turn on the transmitter and ESC. Press the setup button – the RED and GREEN LED’s will come on. Pull the throttle trigger all the way back (full speed) and press the setup button once – only the GREEN LED will come on. Push the trigger full forward (brake/ reverse) and push the setup button once – only the RED LED will come on. Let the throttle trigger return to the neutral (center) position and press the setup button once more to save the program and exit setup mode – only the GREEN LED will be on.
Notes
A: If the receiver does not receive a
signal from the Transmitter, the ESC will not enter the program mode.
B: While in program mode, the motor
will not run.
C: If the setup button is not pressed
for 20 seconds while in the program mode, the ESC will exit the program mode, and the data will be restored to default settings.

Wheel O-Rings
The wheels on the Tailwhip come molded with two grooves that o-rings can be placed in for additional traction. Our testing has shown that a single o-ring on the inside of each wheel provides the most realistic drift car feel on most surfaces. However on some slick surfaces such as polished concrete the addition of an outer o-ring allows for more car control.
Wheel LED Lights
The Tailwhip wheels are equipped with centrifugally activated lights. As you gain speed, the lights will illuminate.
Periodically you will need to replace the batteries in each wheel. Loosen the 3mm flanged wheel nut and remove the tires. Next remove the two Phillips head screws on the inside of the wheel that hold the LED rotor in place. With a small flat blade screwdriver, gently push the battery to the outer edge. Install the new batteries with the + (flat) side of the battery facing up or in the inside of the chassis when the wheel is installed. Re-insert the rotor with the LED aligned to the open slot in the wheel. Re-tighten the Phillips head screws and wheel nut.
Street Racing Your Drift Car
The Tailwhip can also be converted for street or carpet racing. To do so, you will just need to change the wheels and tires.
Tire Options Include
SWK6006 A-Spec Pre-Glued Racing Tires (4) (Recommended for
street use)
SWK6900 Foam Tire Set: Pink 35 Soft (4) ( Recommended for
carpet)
SWK6900 Foam Tire Set: Magenta 40 Medium (4) (Recommended
for carpet)
SWK6900 Foam Tire Set: Purple 40 Hard (4) (Recommended for
carpet)
Steering Rate
Your Transmitter is equipped with a steering-rate control on the top of the radio just above the steering wheel. This advanced feature, usually found only on competition-type radios, allows you to adjust the amount the front tires move when you turn the steering wheel. This is helpful when you are on slick, as well as high traction, surfaces. If your Tailwhip turns too sharply and/or spins out easily, try turning the steering rate down by rotating the knob counterclockwise (to the left). For sharper or additional steering, try turning the knob clockwise (to the right).

Setting the Gear Mesh
Proper gear mesh is important to the performance of your vehicle. If the mesh is too loose it will cause the spur gear to fail (strip); if set too tightly, it will decrease speed and cause the motor to overheat.
To set the gear mesh, loosen the motor screws and insert a small piece of paper between the two gears.
Push the gears together and re-tighten the screws. Finally remove the paper; the gear should be able to rock back and forth slightly.
Changing the Spur Gear
If you're replacing the spur gear with one of a different size (number of teeth), you must first loosen (do not remove) the two screws that secure the motor and slide it back slightly. Next remove the 6 Phillips head screws that support the upper deck, followed by the 2 smaller screws that secure the upper bearing retainer. Then remove the 6 screws that secure the upper gearbox housing. Lift the slipper/spur gear assembly from the chassis.
Gearing Tips
A smaller pinion gear (less teeth) will give you more acceleration but less top speed. A larger pinion gear (more teeth) will give you higher top speed but less acceleration. A larger spur gear (more teeth) will give you more acceleration but less top speed. A smaller spur gear (less teeth) will give you higher top speed but less acceleration.

Remove the center drive cup, and the 4mm locknut from the slipper shaft as well as the remaining slipper parts and gear. After changing the spur gear, reassemble and see section above for Setting the Gear Mesh. You also need to adjust the slipper setting as described elsewhere.
Slipper Adjustment
The Tailwhip is equipped with an adjustable slipper device that offers both traction control and protection for the gear differentials. The slipper is primarily used to absorb sudden impacts to the drivetrain when using more powerful motors and/or battery packs. In addition it can be used to limit the amount of wheel spin when running on an extremely slick surface. Adjustment is made by turning the 3mm nut clockwise (to the right) to reduce the slip, or counterclockwise (to the left) to increase the slip. To check your setting, place the Tailwhip on the ground. As you push the car backwards allowing it to roll freely, punch the throttle. The slipper should slip no more then an inch or two as it accelerates. With the included motor and battery, it should slip just a little.

Chassis Tuning Tips
The Tailwhip has several adjustments available to you for tuning the performance to your needs. Although there are multiple shock positions and camber link locations provided, we have built this model with the best overall settings. The following are simple adjustments and easily maintained settings for proper operation and performance. It is advised when making any adjustment that you do so in small increments and always check for other parts of the chassis that are affected.
Camber
Camber is the angle of the tires to the racing surface when viewed from the front or rear of the vehicle. Negative camber means the wheel leans inward and positive camber means the wheel leans outward.
The best setting range is between 0 and 1 degrees negative camber. More negative camber in the front will result in a more aggressive feel, increasing steering on corner entry. More negative camber in the rear will decrease side bite and increase steering. Camber can be adjusted by lengthening or shortening the threaded turnbuckles. Many dealers sell inexpensive adjustment tools for measuring camber.
Caster
The Tailwhip includes optional caster blocks that allow you to fine-tune your suspension setup. More caster (kingpin leaning back from center) increases steering mid corner and on exit. Less caster (kingpin more vertical) increases steering on corner entry but reduces mid-corner steering.
Toe-In/Out
Toe-in (negative toe) and toe-out (positive toe) refer to the angle of the tires as viewed from the top of the vehicle. Toe-in will provide more stability under acceleration but decreases steering on corner entry. Toe-out will improve steering into corners but not be as stable at speed. The factory setting is 1 degree out. Toe can be adjusted by lengthening or shortening the threaded steering links.
Battery Placement
The battery position in your Tailwhip can be adjusted by moving the battery to the forward or rearward position. Moving the battery forward will increase steering; moving the battery to the rear will increase traction.

Service and Maintenance
Cleaning
Performance can be hindered if dirt gets in any of the moving suspension parts. Use compressed air or a soft paintbrush or toothbrush to remove dust and dirt. Avoid using solvents or chemicals, as they can actually wash dirt into the bearings or moving parts as well as cause damage to the electronics.
Motor Maintenance
After about 15 runs, the motor should be cleaned and brushes inspected for wear. Proper maintenance will not only increase motor life, it will also improve performance.
You will first need to remove the motor from the chassis. Disconnect the bullet connecters from the ESC, then remove the 2 motor retaining screws and remove the pinion gear.
Remove the brush springs and brushes. Inspect the brushes. If severely worn or discolored, they should be replaced.
Spray the motor thoroughly with a high-quality cleaner like DYN5500 Magnum Force Cleaner.
Before reinstalling, oil each motor bearing with a drop of quality bearing lubricant.
14 • Recoil
®
Shocks
The shocks will need to be rebuilt periodically when the fluid gets low or dirty.
Remove the shocks from the vehicle, unscrew the aluminum cap, dump the fluid and clean thoroughly.
Refill with silicone shock fluid to the top of the body (the factory setup is 25 weight oil).
Slowly move the piston up and down to remove air bubbles.
Move the piston to the midway point of the body and install the cap.
Tighten the cap slowly letting excess oil bleed off.
When properly filled, the piston can be pushed and should rebound about 3/8".
