(Updated 1.10.08)
Topic: RST40 Product Design Changes
Affected Models: RST40, RST41
In April of 2005 Dana made major design changes to the RST40 and RST41model axles. The design changes impact
service parts and the information contained in this bulletin will help show the design variations between the original design
and the latest design. Some of the parts in areas that were changed are common to the popular RS404 family axles.
These parts are readily available at PDC’s and OEM Dealerships.
The areas of impacted area of design change are outlined below and detailed in specific pages of the bulletin.

INNER PINION BEARING CHANGE:
Shown below are specific changes that impact the INNER PINION BEARING and PINION BEARING CAGE. The new
production pinions have been redesigned and requires the use of a new inner pinion bearing. As noted in the chart on
page 3 of this bulletin, the inner pinion bearing is now included with the Spicer service gear sets for these models.
Newer production RST40, RST41 models are built with a new design drive pinion that now
has a step design and requires the use of the 129562 inner pinion bearing. Do not use the
old 45460 Inner Pinion Bearing with this gear set – it will not reassemble correctly.

When changing any BEFORE April 2005 RST40 units having a 3.55/3.70 ratio, or replacing any original
3.55/3.70 gearing with the NEW 3.55/3.70 gear sets, the correct Cage/Cup Assy must be used. The NEW
Pinions were changed in overall length affecting the stack up in these ratios, to correct this; you must use the
128372 cage/cup assy. No other ratios are affected.
