Chapter 1
Library Overview
The Spectra® T200, T380, and T680 libraries are highly scalable, modular libraries that provide unattended data storage, archiving, backup, and retrieval for environments ranging from mid-sized PC workgroups to multi-server networks. The unique TransScale™ modular design makes it possible to increase capacity or number of drives in the library to meet the storage and performance needs as they evolve within an organization.
This chapter provides an overview of the library features and components. With the exception of the maximum number of drives, the total storage capacity, and the number of Quad Interface Controllers (QIPs) or bus expansion modules that each supports, the T200, T380, and T680 libraries are functionally and operationally identical. The differences between the libraries are noted where appropriate.
13
Chapter 1 — Library Overview
LIBRARY FEATURES
The Spectra T200, T380, and T680 libraries all use the same components and BlueScale® user interface.
Note: Most of the figures in this guide show the Spectra T380 library.
The libraries include the following features: Advanced BlueScale Environment. The BlueScale Environment
provides control over every aspect of the library’s operation. User Interface. The library user interface lets you set configuration
options, view library and drive information and metrics, manage cartridges, and monitor library operations. You can access the user interface using the library’s front panel touch screen, a direct connection to the library controller module (LCM), or through a standard web browser connected to the remote library controller (RLC).
The relative locations of the components are the same for the T200, T380, and T680 libraries.
User Security. Library users are configured for the library in one of
three groups, each representing a level of privileges.
BlueScale Media Lifecycle Management. BlueScale Media
Lifecycle Management (MLM) helps you manage your tape media by giving you tools to proactively detect potential media errors well before they happen. When used in combination with Spectra Logic Certified Media, MLM lets you manage, track, and report all facets of tape usage from creation to retirement — all consolidated within the same application you use to manage your library.
BlueScale EnergyAudit™ Reports. BlueScale EnergyAudit lets you
display and record actual power consumption, giving you greater control of your data center and budget.
BlueScale Hardware Health Monitoring. BlueScale Hardware
Health Monitoring (HHM) tracks maintenance thresholds for key library components and notifies you when maintenance tasks are required to keep your library in optimum operating condition. These automated notices can be sent to SpectraGuard Technical Support so you can work with them to proactively schedule maintenance service at a convenient time.
Auto-Save Configuration File. Auto-Save Configuration
automatically generates an auto-save file containing a backup of the library configuration and MLM database and stores it on the LCM compact flash once a week and whenever a partition is created or modified. If desired, the library can automatically email the autosave file each time it is created. This external copy of the auto-save file ensures that you can recover your MLM database and library configuration in the event of a disaster.

Library Features
BlueScale Encryption and Key Managment. BlueScale Encryption
and Key Management is tightly integrated into the BlueScale environment. Encryption can be performed either through an encryption-enabled Fibre Channel QIP, if installed, or through encryption-capable LTO-4 drives using LTO-4 media. Encryption key management is provided through the library’s BlueScale user interface.
Automatic Drive Cleaning. Automatic Drive Cleaning lets you
configure a dedicated partition to be used for cleaning cartridges. The cleaning partition can be shared by multiple data partitions and is used by the library to automatically clean drives whenever necessary.
Shared Library Services (SLS) Virtualization. Shared Library
Services (SLS) Virtualization uses partitioning to logically divide the library into multiple virtual libraries. With SLS, one library can support multiple media types and provide dedicated library services to multiple user groups.
BlueScale Vision™ camera. The web-based BlueScale Vision
camera lets you visually monitor the interior of the library. The BlueScale Vision camera is an option you can purchase when you order your library.
Using BlueScale Vision, you can observe import / export operations, tape mounts, cartridge moves, and robotic operations in real time from local or remote locations using the web-based BlueScale Vision software. The ability to view the inside of the library without removing panels or opening doors provides an additional level of performance and health monitoring for your library.
Drives. The libraries accommodate high-performance, high-capacity
LTO, SDLT, and SAIT tape drives, as well as RAID eXchangeable TeraPack (RXT™) drives. Drives are installed in modular drive bay assemblies, each containing up to four drives. Drives are hot-swappable to provide uninterrupted operation.
TeraPack Media Storage. All media is stored in TeraPack media storage
chambers. The maximum media storage capacity of the library depends on the number and type of tape drives installed. TeraPack magazines, individual cartridges, and the RXT media packs can all be labeled with unique bar codes for easy identification.
Bar Code Reader. A bar code reader mounted on the library’s
transporter reads the bar code labels on TeraPack magazines, cartridges, and RXT media packs. The bar code label information is used by the library to maintain an inventory of the media currently stored inside the library.
