INTRODUCTION
SPEAKER PLACEMENT
When following the below recommendations, please keep in mind that placement is always in the ceiling. TIME Mini speakers can be used as a pair for stereo listening, or for all five channels of a home theater system: front left and right, center, and rear left and right. SpeakerCraft recommends the use of a qualified custom installation specialist when installing your TIME Mini speakers. If you need assistance in locating an installer, please contact SpeakerCraft at 1-800 -448-0976.
1. Determine Your Primary Listening Area
The area where you will most likely be sitting when listening to your speakers is your primary listening area.
2. Loudspeaker direction
The loudspeakers can be manually rotated after installation to aim the speakers towards the listening area. Instructions on how to aim the speaker are included in the SPEAKER INSTALLATION section. Suggested areas for each speaker location are shown in
Figure 1. When the speaker is extended into the room, the logo on the grille marks the direction that the speaker is pointing.
3. Placement of Stereo Pair / Front Channels for Home Theater
Consider how far apart the speakers should be. To do this, think of your listening area as one tip of a triangle with each leg of the triangle being equal. See speakers FL (front left) and FR (front right) in Figure 1. Place the speakers as close as possible to the two points the represent on the triangle. If the speakers are to be part of a home theater speaker system, they should be placed as close as possible to the area above the screen. However, in some cases it may be better to place the speakers farther away from the screen in order to maximize speaker separation. An example of a case when this would be desirable is when the television is positioned directly in a corner (See Figure 1b).
4. Placement of Center Channel for Home Theater Place the center channel speaker in line between the front left and right speaker directly above the screen. See C (center) in
Figure 1.
5. Placement of Rear Channels for Home Theater Rear channels should be placed behind the listening area. See RL (rear left) and RR (rear right) in Figure 1.
6. Checking for Obstructions
Before conrming the placement of the speakers, you should carefully consider the location of ceiling joists, electrical, plumbing and other xtures that may get in the way. If you are installing the speakers into an existing ceiling, you can locate obstructions by noting the placement of xtures and, if possible, gaining access to an attic or crawl space for further analysis. A good stud-nder, found at any building supply store, will help you determine where the joists are located in the ceiling.
INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
Prior to the actual installation of the speakers, it will be necessary to run cables to the speaker location from the amplifier and from the TIME Mini Controller. You will need to run at least 16 AWG cable from the amplifier to the speaker. From the TIME Mini Controller you will need to install Cat 5 Cable with RJ45 connectors on both ends. Use T568B pinout on both ends to make a straight through cable (see Figure 2). See your Authorized SpeakerCraft dealer for more detailed information on cable installation. Preparation for and mounting of the speakers can happen at two different stages, if you are building a new ceiling, follow the section titled INSTALLATION PREPARATION - NEW CONSTRUCTION. If you are placing the speakers into an existing ceiling, follow INSTALLATION PREPARATION - FINISHED CEILING. There are different considerations for each application. Please carefully follow the recommendations for your application.

INSTALLATION PREPARATION - NEW CONSTRUCTION
When installing the speakers in new construction, please follow these instructions carefully:
1. Determine Placement
Determine where in the ceiling the speakers will be placed using the recommendations under SPEAKER PLACEMENT. Pay careful attention to the section on avoiding obstructions.
FIGURE 3
SIDE VIEW OF CEILING

2. Mount InstaLLock Bracket
For best results, mount the SpeakerCraft InstaLLock New Construction Brackets for the TIME Mini Series following the instructions included with the bracket.
3. The Location is Ready for Drywall
The bracket provides a stable opening around which the drywall installer can cut out an opening, providing a perfect location for installation of the TIME Mini Series speaker. IMPORTANT: Due to the small size of the speaker and its ange, the hole must be cut to a tighter tolerance than most in-ceiling speakers. Please be careful to avoid cutting the hole too big and to keep the cut clean and smooth.
INSTALLATION PREPARATION - FINISHED CEILING
When the speakers will be installed into a finished ceiling, please follow these instructions carefully:
1. Determine Placement
Determine where in the ceiling the speakers will be placed using the recommendations under SPEAKER PLACEMENT. Make sure that there
are no joists or obstructions where you plan to install the speaker. Pay
careful attention to the section on avoiding obstructions.
2. Trace Template
Place the cut-out template at the location you have decided to place the speaker. Use a few pieces of tape or small tacks to hold the template in place. Trace an outline on the ceiling with a pencil.
FIGURE 4

3. Cut the Hole
IMPORTANT: Due to the small size of the speaker and its ange, the
hole must be cut to a tighter tolerance than most in-ceiling speakers. Please be careful to avoid cutting the hole too big and to keep the cut clean and smooth. CAUTION: This is the most important part of the entire installation. If you are not certain whether or not an obstruction exists behind the desired mounting area, you should start by cutting a small hole in the center of your penciled circle with a drywall saw. Cut at a 45˚ angle toward the inside of the hole (See Figure 3). Cut- ting the small hole at this angle will make drywall repair much easier as the piece cut out can be installed neatly back into the hole. Once you have determined that there are no obstructions in your desired
mounting location, start cutting the nished hole at a 90˚ angle to the
ceiling surface.
SPEAKER INSTALLATION
The unique snap-in installation of the speaker allows for quick installation by following these easy steps:
1. Prepare the speaker
Determine the ceiling thickness. The speaker allows for three drywall thicknesses: 5/8”; 1/2"; 3/8”. The speaker's default drywall thickness is 5/8”. If you need to change this, simply insert either the 1/2" or 3/8" spacer onto each mounting foot. See Figure 4. Insure that the plastic mounting ring is pushed up to rest against the spring clip feet as shown in Figure 5.
FIGURE 5

2. At tach Speaker Cables a. Attach the speaker cable (observing the proper polarity with your
amplier: + to + and – to –). Make sure the proper channel of the amplier is connected to the proper speaker. Left Amp Channel
to Left Speaker, Right Amp Channel to Right Speaker, Center Amp Channel to Center Speaker, etc.
b. Attach the RJ45 Connector from the TIME Mini Controller to the
speaker. Make sure the RJ45 connector snaps securely into place. CAUTION: The RJ45 connector on the TIME Mini speaker is designed to only connect to the TIME Mini Controller. Connecting the other end of the RJ45 Cable to any other connection other than the RJ45 connector on the TIME Mini Controller may seriously damage the speaker and void the speaker's warranty.
3. Install Speaker into Ceiling
Carefully insert the speaker assembly into the ceiling cut out and push
straight up (Figure 6)until the speaker snaps into place (Figure 7). NOTE: The removable arrow sticker indicates which direction the speaker is pointed (Figure 6).
FIGURE 6
Push Speake r into Ceil ing Cut Out
4. Aiming the Speaker
After installing the speaker and the TIME Mini Controller, bring all the speakers down into the room (see separate controller manual for instructions on how to do this). Then aim each speaker in the direction you desire. The logo on the speaker grille indicates which direction the speaker is pointed. Rotate the speaker by grabbing the extended speaker enclosure and gently turning it to point in the direction you desire (See Figure 8). Repeat this for all speakers. After this is done, you can retract the speakers into the ceiling, as directed in the controller's manual. NOTE: Do not rotate more than 360º in one direction. Doing so can damage the speaker and RJ45 data cable.
PAINTING THE SPEAKERS
If you plan to paint your speakers, we recommend that it be done after installation, especially if you want to paint it the same color as the ceiling. Simply leave the speaker retracted into the ceiling and paint the exposed surfaces. Do not attempt to paint the metal grille mesh.
REMOVING THE SPEAKER
1. Be sure the TIME Mini Controller is turned off.
2. Insert a at blade screwdriver or putty knife between the speaker
ange and the ceiling (Figure 9). It is easier if you use two tools one on each side of the speaker.
3. Gently pry the speaker away from the ceiling (Figure 10). As you move
the speaker downward, you can then put your ngers between the speaker ange and the ceiling. Then pull the speaker straight down
from the ceiling (Figure 11).
