1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Young children, the elderly and the frail: As with all naked flames, a guard should be used to protect the above. Risk of burns! Never leave such individuals unsupervised near an ebios-fire when it is lit or when the fire has just gone out. ebios-fires must always be operated under supervision!
Your ebios-fire should be installed and operated in accordance with the relevant national and local regulations, in particular the fire safety regulations of the particular federal state or the fire protection regulations of the VKF (Switzerland).
All ebios-fires are tested to DIN 4734 and are state of the art.
Please ensure sufficiently stable installation and select a location where the burner cannot be shifted through impact or similar when in operation.
All models may only be operated with the enclosure cover closed.
Please note that the fuel may not be refilled whilst the device is still warm or burning. The device may ONLY be refilled via the filling opening and NOT via the burner channel! We recommend that you put out the ebios-fire by running it until the fuel tank runs dry. When not in operation, the extinguishing slide must be above the burner.
Only allow the device to be refilled by individuals who are familiar with the safety instructions and who you have trained on its operation.
The ebios-fire is not a heater – it is a decorative fire.
Bio-ethanol is a hazardous material and may only be stored in quantities allowed by the regulations:
Storage in basement: max. 20 litres Storage in living area: max. 5 litres

2. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Please carefully read and note the following instructions. Remember that bioethanol is a liquid fuel that can generate high temperatures when burned and which is itself highly flammable. You should also bear in mind that the brightness of the flame can dim to a level at which the flame is no longer clearly visible. Please make children and other people in the home aware of this. Failing to follow the installation and operating instructions can result in dangerous situations and the possibility of explosive ignition of the fuel.
Correct installation and proper handling are essential to ensure safe, reliable operation of your fire. The unit is not self-supporting. It must be installed as per the instructions, ensuring it is horizontal. Never move the burner when the unit is operating. The unit must be installed in such a way that it cannot be knocked over or tilted. The fire should be installed and lit for the first time by a Spartherm-authorised specialist.

The following must be observed to ensure safe and easy transportation:
• The ebios-fire may only be lifted with transport aids from its rear side (if required), especially if sack barrows are used.
• The tank must be empty during transportation.
Please notify your supplier immediately of any TRANSPORT DAMAGE. Protect the enclosure and visible parts of the fireplace feature against soiling and damage during assembly and transportation.
2.4. INSTALLATION LOCATION
When choosing the installation location for your ebios-fire please ensure the unit is not directly exposed to major heat sources such as radiators, stoves, etc. and that it is not installed in a room where high temperatures occur (e.g. a sauna). External heating of the ethanol fireplace while the appliance is not being used, may lead to the escape of the fuel from the tank. The fuel will escape from the burner channel into the overflow tray. In this case, please remove the burner before ignition and empty the overflow tray.
Your ebios-fire may not be installed:
• In stairwells, except in residential buildings comprising no more than two dwellings
• In publicly accessible corridors.
• In garages
• In areas where highly flammable or explosive substances or com-pounds are processed, stored or manufactured in quantities constituting an ignition or explosion hazard.
• In badly ventilated areas
• In unsupervised publicly accessible areas.
• In areas that are not protected against crossventilation.
• On tables, furniture, shelves etc.
2.5 INSTALLATION / ASSEMBLY
The ebios insert is a ready-to-use unit for fitting into a custom-made piece of furniture (combustible materials) or a custom-built fireplace casing (noncombustible materials).
Custom-built fireplaces using the ebios insert do not require a flue.
The furniture or the fireplace casing containing the ebios insert must be level and secured against tilting. Fix the wall unit to the wall and the freestanding unit to the wall or to the floor. Observe the safety distances (Figs. 8 and 9 Radiant range). Back vents must not be closed. Place the burner, with its safety pan and cover plate, in the unit’s designated receptacle.
Ensure that free standing units are installed on adequate load bearing floors. In other case appropriate measures must be taken (for example a plate for load distribution) to ensure load bearing.
Please use appropriate fastening material (wall-plugs, screws etc.) for wall mounting.
Modifications to the design or construction of the ebios insert are NOT permissible.

3. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Please study these Assembly and Operating Instructions carefully before installing and operating your ebios-fire. Remove all items from the ebiosfire-Quadra Inside (except the burner unit).
Please observe the fire protection and hazardous materials regulations!
3.1 GENERAL NOTES ON OPERATION
• Infants, the elderly or infirm persons: As with all open flames, it is sensible to fit a protective device (available as accessory at retail outlets) for these groups of people Risk of burning! Never leave these people near the burning or just extinguished ebios-fire without supervision! Please point this source of danger out to these persons.
• Never place any flammable objects on the open surfaces of the ebios insert. Do not place any items of washing on the ebios-fire unit for drying. Position racks for drying clothes outside the radiating range only (fig. 10 + 14)! Fire hazard!
• Burning releases thermal energy which heats up the burner, the enclosure surfaces, the glass panes (depending on model) and the protective glass. Never touch any elements without appropriate protection (e.g. heat protection gloves). Risk of burning!
• Never leave the fire unattended whilst it is burning!!
• With the Quadra Inside model, the enclosure covers must be closed and the protective glass in place
Do not place any combustible objects, such as decorations, clothing, etc., in the radiant area (300 mm) (see Fig. 8).
The space above the fire must be clear of all objects, all the way up to the ceiling (ceiling clearance >600 mm) (see Fig. 9).
2.8 AIR SUPPLY FOR COMBUSTION
Your ebios-fire draws air for combustion from the installation room (dependent on ambient air). Ensure that the installation room has adequate fresh air supply. Fresh air supply may be insufficient if windows and doors are sealed (e.g. possible energy saving measures). This may affect your wellbeing and possibly even your safety, or the burning behaviour of your ebios-fire. Open a window for adequate fresh air supply.
Fig. 9
min. 15
Page 15
GB
GB 15
• It is recommended to open a window during operation.
• The operation of more than one decorative ethanol fireplace is permitted only provided the total fuel consumption of all the units does not exceed
0.5 l/h and ventilation is adequate. In this context, please observe the table on Page 5 in Section 2.1. Technical data.
• The burner may only be operated using the burner mat and its wicks. Changes to the number of wicks, the wick material or the burner mat are prohibited.
• Any modifications to the ebios-fire units are prohibited
• This is a decorative fireplace for private household use - it is not intended for heating or for continuous use! It must nevertheless be observed that heat is generated as a by-product during burning (approx. 3 kW). This may heat up the installation room.
• The tank should be empty and the cover plate should be on the burner when it is not in use. The burners are intended to burn until the fuel tank is empty. Fill in less fuel if you wish to enjoy the play of the flames for a short period only. To shut down the unit prematurely, use the handling rod to close the burner with the cover plate. Allow the burner to cool down for at least 1 hour after extinguishing!
• The burner may NOT be filled when warm or burning and NOT via the burner channel! DANGER TO LIFE!
• Handling of fuel near the hot or still burning unit poses considerable risks and must be avoided at all costs!
• Fill the burner exclusively via the filler opening, never via the burner channel! (see fig. 1)
• Should you accidentally spill ethanol, please remove this immediately and before igniting the burner!
• Please be aware that the brightness of the flame may diminish until the flame is no longer clearly visible. Point this out to children and other persons in the household.
• Check that the burner is extinguished and has cooled down completely (wait for at least 1 hour after extinguishing).
• Do not smoke when handling the fuel and the ebios-fire.
Non-observance of these basic rules may lead to uncontrolled ignition and even explosion!
3.2 FUEL
The fuel used is “Bio-ethanol” (chemical formula C2H6O) with ethanol content of 96%, available from your specialist dealer. It is classified as a hazardous substance under ADR: Class 3 PG II, UN 1170.
Never use other fuels such as petrol, spirit or similar flammable liquids, or mixtures of any kind. The warranty will be void and operation may be unsafe unless the burners are operated exclusively with the prescribed fuel.
Ethanol is a highly flammable liquid which must be stored well-sealed, protected against light and away from sources of ignition. It is permitted to store a maximum of 5 litres and 20 litres in the living area and the basement resp. Store the Bio-ethanol out of the reach of children. For reasons of safety and to avoid unintentional ignition by unauthorised persons or evaporation of the fuel, only fill the burners shortly before use.
Please note that ethanol is exclusively suited for burning and is unsuitable for consumption. Watch over your children! In case of ingestion, immediately seek medical assistance and present the fuel label.

3.3.1 INITIAL OPERATION OF THE EBIOS INSERT
Proceed as follows:
1. Ensure an adequate air supply.
2. Check that the burner is extinguished and has cooled down completely (wait for at least 1 hour after extinguishing).
3. There is no need to remove the burner from the casing to fill it. Open the casing cover. It may be necessary to remove the glass, depending on how it is fitted. If the burner is installed in a custom-built fireplace, the burner should be removed from the casing to fill it (the level indicator must be visible).
4. Check the content of the tank.
5. Ensure that the cover plate is on the burner and covers the burner mat.
6. Open the filler screw, using the key.
7. Place the funnel into the filler opening and add maximum 2.6 litres of Bio-ethanol.
8. The fill level gauge indicates the maximum permissible filling level. The maximum filling level is reached when the Bio-ethanol flows through the slots (see arrow) into the reflector curve.
9. Take the bottle for wetting the burner. Insert the bottle neck into the tank opening until submerged under the fuel. Squeeze the bottle for the air to escape and release slowly again for the fuel to be drawn in. Wait until the bottle returns to its original shape.
10. Close and tighten the filler screw, using the key.
11. Close the enclosure cover of your fire feature and ensure that the cover is not within range of the flames but is evenly spaced from the burner channel (see fig. 7). Then mount the protective glass again.
12. Hook the handling rod into the cover plate and remove same.
Page 18
GB 18
13. With the filled bottle, wet the burner mat with the fuel.
14. Put the bottle aside.
15. Wait for about 2 minutes before lighting, for the wicks to fully soak up the ethanol.
16. Light the fire at the burner mat and step back from the flames. It may take a few minutes for the flames to burn evenly.
Should you add too much fuel on occasion and should the burner overflow, the ethanol will collect in the safety pan. Be sure to empty the safety pan before lighting the burner. Clean the surface of the burner until it is dry and completely free of ethanol.
Caution: Ethanol is highly flammable. Make sure there are no sources of ignition nearby.
3.4 TOPPING UP WITH FUEL
The burner must NOT be filled when warm or burning and NOT via the burner channel! LIFE THREATENING!
Wait at least 1 hour between extinguishing and refilling the burner!
Please also leave the possibly still hot protective glass on the unit during this time! Risk of burning!
The burners are designed to burn until the fuel runs out. Fill in less fuel if you wish to enjoy the play of the flames for a short period only. To shut down the unit prematurely, use the handling rod to close the burner with the cover plate.
Top up as follows:
