GENERAL INFORMATION
Before your ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H2O/a5/a7/a8 stove is assembled and
installed you should meet with the master chimney sweep responsible for
such matters in your area. He will advise you on the building regulations
and suitability of your chimney and will carry out the acceptance test on
your stove. Calculation of the dimensions of the chimney is based on DIN
EN 13384 using the triple values contained in this manual (see Technical
Data).
Important for young children, the elderly or the frail: As with all other
heating appliances, a guard should be fitted to protect the above persons
because both the glass door and the stove cover panels can become very
hot in use. Caution: Risk of burns! Never leave such individuals unsuper-
vised near a stove when it is lit or when the fire has just gone out. As a
basic rule, the stove should not be left unattended for long periods of time
when lit.
The protective glove supplied is designed only for protection from
heat when operating the control handle and the cold hand. The glove
is not fireproof.
When assembling and operating your stove and when connecting it to the
chimney you must ensure that you comply with national and European
standards, the relevant country-specific and local guidelines and regula-
tions and, in Germany, the relevant Heating Regulation (FeuVO) of the state
where you live.
The stove should always be operated with the door closed. Modifying the
closing system is not permissible.

1. TESTED QUALITY
OUR STOVES ARE TESTED TO DIN EN 13240. THE DECLARATION OF PER-
FORMANCE MAY BE VIEWED AND IS OBTAINABLE FROM WWW.SPARTHERM.
COM
This stove has a self-closing firebox door, and so the door is only ever
opened for operating purposes (e.g. cleaning the firebox or putting on more
wood). For safety reasons, tampering with the closing mechanism is not per-
missible and will void the warranty and the operating permit. The warranty
and the operating permit will also be voided if any technical modifications
are made to other parts of the stove.
1.1. SCOPE OF SUPPLY
ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H2O/a5/a7/a8 stove with the following
features:
• Firebox made from eboris 1300 (refractory concrete)
• Primary and secondary air supply
• Self-closing firebox door with high temperature-resistant ceramic glass
viewing pane
• Protective glove
• Rating plate (for mounting location see section „3.4 Rating Plate“ on
page 29)
• The stove is pre-assembled. It is delivered in disposable cardboard
packaging for ease of transport.
• Pump thermostat (ambiente a4 H

O only)
• Thermal discharge safety device ¾¨ with vent valve (ambiente a4 H

only).
1.2. DAMAGE IN TRANSIT
Please inspect the goods immediately upon delivery (visual check). Any
damage should be noted on your delivery note. You should then inform
your stove fitter. Protect the visible parts of the stove from dirt and damage
during installation.
Only approved and sufficiently strong handling aids should be used to trans-
port your stove. The following points must be noted to ensure safe transport
without any problems:
• The stove should always be transported in the upright position or tilted
slightly backwards (the back of the stove is labelled).
• A hand truck used as a handling aid must load the stove from the rear
only.
2. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
The assembly and installation of your ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H2O/a5/
a7/a8 stove should be carried out by a specialist. Before your stove is
assembled and installed you should meet with the master chimney sweep
responsible for such matters in your area to discuss the suitability of your
chimney and the installation location and to clarify other matters.
2.1. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR INSTALLATION
All relevant national and European standards and local regulations (DIN,
DIN EN, state building regulations, heating system regulations, etc.) must
be noted and observed when installing, connecting up and operating the

Fireplaces should only be installed in rooms and at locations where the
position, structural conditions and type of use will not create any hazards.
The floor area of the room where it is installed must be of such a type and
size that the fireplace can be correctly operated in accordance with the
instructions.
The ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4H2O/a5/a7/a8 stove is a non-room air sealed
(open flue) fireplace. Problems may therefore arise if the stove is operated
at the same time as a ventilation system such as a kitchen extractor hood
or bathroom fan. Appropriate measures should be taken in such cases to
ensure that the stove can be operated safely (pressure monitor, door contact
switch, etc.).
These safety precautions do not apply in the case of a room air sealed
appliance (ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H
2
O RLU).
2.1.1. INSTALLATION LOCATION
Your ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H2O/a5/a7/a8 stove must not be installed:
1. In stairwells and landings, except in residential buildings with no more
than two flats.
2. In corridors accessible to the public
3. In garages.
4. In rooms or flats that are vented by ventilating systems or hot air sys-
tems using blowers, unless the safe operation of the stove is ensured.
5. In rooms where highly flammable or explosive substances or mixtures
are processed, stored or manufactured in such quantities that ignition or
explosion would be hazardous.
2.1.2. MULTIPLE USAGE
Multiple usage of the chimney in accordance with DIN 18160 is possible as
the ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H
2
O/a5/a7/a8 stove has a self-closing firebox
door (a1). However, multiple usage must always be discussed and agreed
in advance with the master chimney sweep responsible for such matters in
your area. Note that all fireplaces connected to the same chimney must also
be approved for multiple usage.

2.3. ASSEMBLY / INSTALLATION
The ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H2O/a5/a7/a8 stove must only be installed
on floors made of non-combustible materials with sufficient load-bearing
capacity. Please note the overall weight (see Technical Data). If necessary,
load-bearing capacity must be ensured by placing the stove on top of a
slab of non-combustible building material of sufficient thickness for weight
distribution purposes.
Stand the stove on the floor and level it horizontally, observing the safety
distances (refer to section „2.5. Fire Precautions“ on page 18). The legs
are height-adjustable.
2.3.1. FITTING THE FLUE GAS STACK
The ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H2O/a5/a7/a8 is supplied ready assembled
as ordered. The flue gas outlet will be fitted at the rear unless otherwise
specified at the time of ordering. If the position subsequently has to be
changed, the following steps should be carried out:

piece if already fitted (Fig. 2a Item A). Remove the top cover panel and
the top flue gas connection cover panel (Fig. 2a Item B). Undo the screws
and remove the cover plate (Fig. 2b Items B and C). Then dismantle the
rear flue gas outlet connecting sleeve. Start by undoing the screws (Fig.
2b Item D). Fit the connecting sleeve for the top flue gas connection (Fig.
2c Items E and F). Then fit the cover plate for the rear flue gas connection

The ambiente a8 is a double-sided stove with two firebox doors. This stove
has a top flue gas stack connection (this cannot be altered).
The ambiente a7 is supplied ready assembled as per the order. The flue gas
outlet (dia. 150 mm) will be fitted at the rear unless otherwise specified at
the time of ordering. If the position subsequently has to be changed, the
following steps should be carried out:
Changing installation from rear to top: Remove the chimney connecting
piece if already fitted. Remove the top cover panel and the top flue gas
connection cover panel (Fig. 4a). Then dismantle the rear flue gas outlet
connecting sleeve. Start by undoing the screws (Fig. 4a). Undo the screws
and remove the cover plate (Fig. 4b). Fit the connecting sleeve for the top
flue gas connection (Fig. 4c). Then fit the cover plate to the rear flue gas
connection (Fig. 4c). Finally, replace the cover panel in position (Fig. 4d).

the two hexagon head screws and remove the cover plate (Fig. 3b). Then
dismantle the rear flue gas outlet connecting sleeve. Start by undoing the
screws (Fig. 3b). Fit the connecting sleeve for the top flue gas connection
(Fig. 3c). Then fit the cover plate to the rear flue gas connection (Fig. 3c).
Finally, replace the rear flue gas connection cover panel, the connecting
piece to the chimney and the cover plate (Fig. 3d).

2.3.2. FITTING THE SCREEN TO THE SWIVEL CONNECTOR
ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H2O
The screen is on top of the stove at delivery. The screen should not be fitted
until the a1/a2/a3/a4 stove has reached its installation location and has been
levelled. Be sure to unscrew the legs by a distance of 6-14 mm (Fig. 5a).
Next, undo the two fastening screws on the rear of the screen (Fig. 5b
Item B).
Now fit the screen around the swivel connector. The screen has to be pulled
apart at the join to do this. After placing the screen in position, re-insert the
two screws at the join (Fig. 5b). Then screw the screen on to the retainers
provided (Fig. 5c).
The functioning of the swivel connector is described in section „3.3 Func-
tioning of Swivel Connector“ on page 28.

2.3.3. FITTING THE STORAGE STONES
ambiente a3/a4
Storage stones can only be fitted or retrofitted to the ambiente a3 and a4
models.
If the ambiente a3 or a4 is ordered with storage stones, the front stone
and supporting plate are already fitted at the factory. For weight reasons,
the other storage stones are assembled on site. Stoves are supplied with
a rear flue gas connection as standard, unless otherwise specified at the
time of ordering.
To install the storage stones, start by removing the cover. Note that the
stove should not yet be connected to the chimney when doing this.
Fitting the front stone:
(only if retrofitting storage stones) Start by installing the front stone (A).
Next, fit the supporting plate (B) (Fig. 6a).
Fitting the storage stones:
ambiente a3 with top and side flue gas connection: Place the three shallow
stones in position to form a ring and replace the cover (Fig. 6b).
ambiente a4 with top flue gas
connection:
Start by placing the six tall stones
in position to form a ring. These
have a recessed handle on the
inside to facilitate assembly. Now
place the three shallow stones in

Controlling the heat output to the
storage system:
(ambiente a3 and a4 only)
The heat output to the storage stones
can be controlled via the adjustment
lever (Fig. 6e). If the adjustment
lever is moved to the ‘+’ position,
the convective heat is transmitted
directly from the stove to the room.
The room will warm up faster at this
setting. If the adjustment lever is set
to the ‘-’ position, the convective heat
will remain in the storage stones for
longer. The heat is stored in the stove and slowly released to the room after
the fire has gone out. The stove will continue to provide a cosy warmth even
when the fire has gone out.

The ambiente a5 stove can be optionally fitted with storage stones for pro-
longed heat storage. Proceed as follows to fit the stones: In order to fit
storage stones to the ambiente a5 stove, the first step is to remove the stove
top cover (Fig. 7a).
Now push the ‘front’ storage stone (WxHxD 310 mm x 285 mm x 30 mm)
into the front locating slot (Fig. 7b). Next, place the two ‘back’ storage
stones (WxHxD 250 mm x 390 mm x 30 mm) in the locating slot at the rear
of the body (Fig. 7c). Place the ‘top’ storage stones (Fig. 7d - 7h) on the top

plate of the stove body, according to whether the stove has a top or rear flue
gas connection. (This example shows a rear flue gas connection). After put-
ting the storage stones in position, replace the stove top cover. (Fig. 7i - 7j)
2.4. COMBUSTION AIR SUPPLY
The combustion air supply can be provided in various ways as described in
sections 2.4.1, 2.4.2 and 2.4.3.
2.4.1. NON-ROOM AIR SEALED OPERATION (RLA)
Your ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H2O/a5/a7/a8 stove draws the air it needs for
combustion from the room where it is installed (non-room air sealed opera-
tion). An adequate supply of fresh air must be ensured in the room where the
stove is installed (for further details refer to the heating systems regulations
for the country concerned, DIN 18896, the technical rules, etc.) The installer
and the operator of the stove should check the fresh air supply. An adequate
air supply for combustion must be ensured when several fireplaces are oper-
ated in one room or in connecting rooms. If the windows and doors are sealed
(e.g., in connection with energy-saving measures) the fresh air supply may
be restricted and that can adversely affect the stove’s draught. This can be
detrimental to your health and also, in some cases, to your safety.
If necessary, an additional air supply can be provided by fitting an air inlet near the
stove or by fitting a combustion air intake pipe which connects with the external
air (refer to section 2.4.3 Separate Combustion Air Supply on page 16) or with a
well ventilated room (not the room where the stove is installed). In particular, it
must always be ensured that the necessary combustion air intakes remain oper-
ational when the fireplace is in use. Note that operating a ventilating system at
the same time, e.g. an extractor hood or bathroom fan, in the same room or in
a connecting room can adversely affect the operation of the stove (even causing
smoke or flue gas to leak out into the room, despite the firebox door being closed).
Ventilating devices must therefore not be operated at the same time as the stove
unless suitable measures are taken to maintain the air supply to the stove.

2.4.2. ROOM AIR SEALED OPERATION (RLU)
Your ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H2O RLU stove does not draw the air it needs
for combustion from the room where it is installed (room air sealed oper-
ation). Combustion air intakes and pipes must not be obstructed or closed
unless special safety devices are fitted to ensure that the stove can only
be operated when the closing system is open. The cross-section must not
be reduced by means of an obstructor or grille. According to EnEV, the
combustion air pipe should be fitted with a shut-off device. The position of
the shut-off device must be obvious from the outside of the connecting pipe.
This measure is not necessary with balanced flue systems. The combustion
air intake pipe should be insulated to prevent moisture from the ambient
air from condensing on the pipe. Also, when fitting the pipe it should be
ensured that no water or other substances can enter the ambiente a1/a2/
a3/a4/a4 H
2
O RLU stove and that any condensate can drain away outside.
According to the relevant provisions, combustion air ducts that bridge
firewalls in buildings with more than two full storeys must be constructed
such that fire and smoke cannot spread to other storeys or fire lobbies.
The national and local fire precautions for the place of installation must be
observed. Please ensure that the pipework is always leaktight.
2.4.3. SEPARATE COMBUSTION AIR SUPPLY
It is possible to provide the stove with a separate combustion air supply. The
separate combustion air connection is located at the rear of the unit and in
the lower compartment (D = 100 mm) at the sides. The connecting piece
is ready-assembled. The stove covering can be opened up for the purpose
(unscrew the cover cap) and the connecting piece can be screwed on. If a
pipe connection is attached to the combustion air coupling, the combustion
air is drawn into the stove from outside or from other rooms such as the
basement. When connecting up the stove to a combustion air pipe, the
requirements of TR-OL (technical rules), DIN 18896, etc. must be observed
and applied. In particular, sufficient dimensioning of the pipes must
be ensured.
If using a swivel connector, a permanently flexible connection must
be made. The rotating action must not be restricted.
Combustion air intakes and pipes must not be obstructed or closed unless
special safety devices are fitted to ensure that the stove can only be
operated when the closing system is open. The cross-section must not
be reduced by means of an obstructor or grille. If the combustion air pipe
has to be routed out of the building, a shut-off device must be fitted. The
shut-off device must be identifiable from outside. In the case of an external
connection the pipe should be insulated, as condensate may form. Also,
when fitting the pipe it should be ensured that no water or other substances
can enter the stove and that any condensate can drain away outside. Please
note that room air sealed operation of the stove is not possible with a sepa-
rate combustion air supply. That means that appropriate safety precautions
must be taken if operating an extractor fan or cooker hood when the stove
is in use.
According to the relevant provisions, combustion air ducts that bridge

Special instructions for the ambiente a7/a8
It is possible to provide the stoves with a separate combustion air supply. The
separate combustion air connection is located at the rear of the stove (a7 only)
and on the underside of the stove (D = 100 mm). Proceed as follows to connect
up the combustion air supply.
Installation on underside of stove (a7 and a8):
Stand the stove on the floor above the combustion air connection. Now care-
fully lift off the stove covering. (Fig. 8a). Next, unscrew the screw cap. (Fig.
8b). Connect the combustion air connecting piece to the flexible, extensible
combustion air duct installed on site. If the combustion air connection is
rigid at floor level, the separate combustion air connecting piece supplied
must be pushed into the connection to form an airtight seal.
Installation at rear of stove (a7):
Start by unscrewing the screw cap (Fig. 8d). Now fit the combustion air
connecting piece (Fig. 8e). Lastly, connect the combustion air connecting
piece with the combustion air duct.

2.5. FIRE PRECAUTIONS
General Information about Fire Precautions
Stoves are heating systems and are subject to regulations and essential fire
precautions. The fire precautions and minimum distances should be borne
in mind when selecting the installation location for the stove. A minimum
distance of 5 cm from the rear wall must always be maintained.
Greater distances should be allowed for reasons of safety and fire
prevention in the case of walls that need to be protected or combus-
tible building components.
The table that follows shows the distances that must be maintained accord-
ing to the type of stove and the installation situation on site. Use the draw-
ings (Figs. 9-11) to help you determine your particular installation situation
and note the distances that must be maintained.
Note the fire precautions when installing the stove. Ask your local
chimney sweep for advice.
• Their structure and materials enable non-combustible mounting walls
not in need of protection to be permanently exposed to temperatures
above 85°C. Combustible mounting walls in need of protection (e.g.
stud partition construction) must be protected from temperatures above
85°C.
The mounting walls should be assessed before installing the stove. If the
nature of the mounting wall cannot be identified with certainty, a specialist
(such as the chimney sweep) should be consulted.
• According to DIN 4102-1, wallpaper used as a wall covering is not con-
sidered a combustible building component and does not require any
special precautions.
• Please note that the minimum distances indicated from rear walls and
side walls need to be adapted for rotating stoves.
• It is important to observe the minimum distance from the chimney con-
necting piece to combustible building components (refer to section „2.7.
Connecting pieces“ on page 20).
• There must be no combustible objects within a radius of 50 cm above
the stove.
Floor coverings near the stove
Floors made from combustible materials in front of the firebox door must be
protected by a covering of non-combustible materials. This covering should
extend at least 50 cm in front of the stove and at least 30 cm at each side
(Figs. 9-11) (measuring from the firebox door or viewing pane).
There must be no combustible building components, furniture, curtains or
decorations within the radiant area of 80 cm (Figs. 9-11) in front of the
firebox door or viewing pane. That distance can be reduced to 40 cm if a
fire screen ventilated on both sides is placed between the fireplace and
any combustible objects. Before your stove is lit for the first time it must
undergo acceptance by the local chimney sweep. Your local chimney sweep
can/should advise you on the installation conditions before your stove is
installed and give you instructions on the correct installation of your stove.
Minimum distances from nearby building components
The distances indicated in the table below must be observed, according to
your stove’s viewing pane arrangement (see sketches below) and the nature
of the mounting walls. In the stove installation example shown in Fig. 9, if

dimension B is observed and dimension E measured on site is less than the
value indicated, then it is not necessary to allow for the radiant area with
respect to the side walls. However, if the side wall is longer than dimension
E, it must be decided on site whether this wall needs to be protected. The
position of the radiant area can be altered if necessary by increasing dimen-
sion A or dimension B.

2.6. SHUT-OFF DEVICES
Flue systems should be constructed in accordance with the Technical
Rules of the Stove and Hot Air Heating System Trade. It is permissible
for stoves to have a shut-off device in the flue system. This device must not
interfere with inspection and cleaning of the connecting piece and it must not
be of self-closing design. The status of the shut-off device must be obvious
from the outside, e.g. from the position of the control handle. Such devices
may only be fitted in the flue gas manifold, flue gas stack or connecting piece.
2.7. CONNECTING PIECES
Connecting pieces: Your ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H2O/a5/a7/a8 stove is
connected to the chimney by 150 or 160 mm diameter connecting pieces
made from steel sheet at least 2 mm thick. These must comply with DIN
1298 or DIN EN 1856-2 and they must be connected to the chimney in
accordance with DIN 18160 or the regulations that apply in the country
concerned.
It is important to ensure that the flue gas pipe takes the shortest possible
route upwards towards the chimney. The number of bends in the flue gas
pipe should be kept to a minimum. In addition, the flue gas pipe should be
connected to the chimney by a wall lining that makes a seal with the wall
and the pipe. If necessary, the flue gas pipe should be fastened with clips
to hold it securely in place. If the flue gas pipe passes through components
made from combustible materials, the flue gas pipe must be insulated in
accordance with the regulations.
The basic rule is that the connecting piping should be installed in such a
way that it can be cleaned at any time. This should be ensured by providing
an appropriate number of cleaning apertures.
If the ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4 RLA is designed to rotate, the connecting pip-
ing should be installed in such a way that the fastening is not compromised.
The flue gas pipe must not turn when the stove rotates.
Depending on the information provided by the flue gas pipe manufacturer,
the minimum distance from the chimney connecting piece to combustible
components may increase the distance between the stove and combustible
building components. The minimum distances from combustible compo-
nents stated in this Manual refer to the stove, and should be adapted if
necessary (refer to section „2.5. Fire Precautions“ on page 18).
In the case of top flue gas routing, please note that a cleaning hatch must
be provided above the flue gas connecting pipe.
2.8. SWIVEL CONNECTOR
A swivel connector can only be used with the ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4 RLA
with top flue gas connection models and must be specified when ordering.
In this case the stove can be rotated 180°, i.e. 90° to the left and 90° to the
right. For operation of the swivel function refer to section „3.3 Functioning
of Swivel Connector“ on page 28).
2.9 INSTALLING THE WATER-HEATING COMPONENTS OF THE ambiente a4 H
2
O
Installation of the water-heating components, including fitting the neces-
sary safety devices, etc., should always be carried out by a specialist. The
ambiente a4 H
2
O should be installed in such a way that all water-carrying
components are always accessible and can be inspected at any time.

Note: The stove and all associated thermowells, connections,
structural parts and piping must be hydraulic pressure tested and
checked for leaks before commissioning.
2.9.1 ambiente a4 H2O PIPE CONNECTIONS
The pipes can be connected to the rear, inside or underside of the stove
(Figs. 12a-12c).
The connections are fitted with protective caps and brass plugs for trans-
port. The brass plugs are normally inserted into the connections on the
inside of the lower compartment. If the connection is to be made via the
base of the unit or through the floor, the brass plugs should be removed and
inserted in the rear-facing connections. The connections are labelled and
should not be used other than as indicated. In particular, the integral safety
device (safety heat exchanger) should not be used to heat water.
To facilitate installation of piping, etc., when making a connection through
the floor, an installation template can be downloaded from the dealer login
section of our home page at www.spartherm.com. Alternatively, we can
supply a paper print-out of a 1:1 scale installation template on request.
The Flex connection kit (order number 1016990) can be ordered from us for
straightforward, speedy connection of the pipework through the floor and
the internal connections.

2.9.2 BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR INSTALLATION OF THE ambiente a4 H
2
O
The ambiente a4 H2O should only be installed in systems with a thermostatic
safety device to DIN 4751 or DIN EN 12828. The connecting pipes to the
heating system should always be laid in such a way that they can be discon
-
nected (e.g. screwed connection).
Before using the stove for the first time, both the heating components (heat-
ing system) and the water components (thermal discharge safety device,
safety heat exchanger) must be filled and vented. After filling it up, check
that all hydraulic connections are leaktight.
Operating the stove without connecting it to the water system will
cause irreparable damage and will void any warranty claims.
A type-tested safety valve (coded H) with a threshold pressure of max.
3.0 bar should be fitted in the flow pipe immediately next to the ambiente
a4 H
2
O. No shut-off devices must be integrated into the system between
the safety valve and the ambiente a4 H
2
O, as that would disable the safety
device. Also, all necessary safety devices should be integrated into the over-
all system in such a way that safe operation is ensured. A dedicated safety
valve must be fitted even if another safety valve is present elsewhere in the
overall system (note TRD 721).
The installation and operating instructions for the heating components /
additional components included in the system must be read and observed
when installing the stove.
2.9.3 THERMAL DISCHARGE SAFETY DEVICE ambiente a4 H
2
O
As the ambiente a4 H2O heating system cannot be quickly switched off auto-
matically, the water heat exchanger must be fitted with a thermal discharge
safety device according to DIN 4751 Part 2 or DIN EN 12828. A safety
device (safety heat exchanger) to prevent overheating is integrated into the
ambiente a4 H
2
O for this purpose. This safety device must not be used to
heat water.
The thermal discharge safety device (e.g. Watts, STS20/200) is not pre-as-
sembled to protect it during transport and installation. It will be found inside
the fire chamber at delivery and should be fitted to the correspondingly
labelled connection. After that, the capillary and adapter should be screwed
on to the thermal discharge safety device. This has been tested and
approved for a minimum water throughput of 900 kg/h.
The following points must be noted during installation to ensure that the
safety device will operate correctly.
• A flow pressure of min. 1.5 bar must be available at the cold water inlet.
That pressure must be guaranteed at all times. Fluctuations in the water
supply must be avoided. That means, for example, that a domestic water
supply which is dependent on the mains pressure is not permissible.
• A minimum water flow of approx. 900 kg/h must be ensured. It must not
be possible to shut off this supply.
• It must be ensured that cold water (5-20°) is always available. That does
not include the domestic water supply.

All safety-related components must be integrated into the system in such a
way that their function and leaktightness can be checked at any time. The
thermal discharge safety device water drain should be designed in such a
way that it can be inspected at any time (e.g., via an open drain with siphon
trap).
The cold water pipe should be flushed through before first using the system.
This will flush out any dirt that could interfere with the closing of the thermal
discharge safety device. The instructions and information provided by the
manufacturer of the thermal discharge safety device must be observed.
2.9.4 THERMAL PUMP CONTROL ambiente a4 H2O
A thermostatic switch (e.g. Afriso) is located in the bottom compartment for
optimum control of the circulating pump. This ensures that the circulating
pump will start up only when the water reaches the specified temperature
(>60°C). It is possible for the pump to be controlled via the boiler control
system or similar devices if the pump switches on when the temperature
exceeds 55°C. The maximum contact rating of the factory-fitted pump ther-
mostat is approx. 16 (4) A with a 250 V AC system.
The thermostat is factory-set to a temperature of approx. 62°C. The circu-
lating pump or the load unit will thus be switched on or off if the temper-
ature reaches or drops below the specified water temperature of approx.
60°C in the ambiente a4 H
2
O’s water heat exchanger. As an option, the
temperature can be adjusted by the installation contractor if circumstances
demand. This is done by adjusting the circular disc or removing the top
cover, according to the thermostat version. The temperature range can be
altered after removing the cover.
Please note: At water temperatures below 60°C there is a greater risk of
falling below the dew point. This can cause tarry soot to form. Also, cleaning
becomes necessary much more often. We therefore recommend setting the
temperature at which the pump switches on to a minimum of 60°C and a
maximum of 70°C.
2.9.5 ELECTRICAL CONNECTION
The entire electrical installation of the individual components of the heating
system must be carried out by an authorised specialist contractor. All work
must be carried out in accordance with VDE regulations (e.g., VDE 0105,
VDE 0116, VDE 0100, etc.) and the local electricity supplier’s technical
connection conditions.
The only work required on the ambiente a4 H
2
O is the electrical installation of
the thermostat for the load unit pump (refer to section „2.9.7 Load unit (heat
charger) in the ambiente a4 H
2
O stoves“ on page 26) and connection to
the domestic electricity supply. The temperature-resistant connecting lead is
approx. 3.0 m long and is already connected up inside the thermostat.
The blue wire, the switched phase (L‘) is wired as phase to the circulating pump or load unit.
The green-and-yellow wire is wired to the earth conductor (ground) (PE) of the mains cable.
The brown wire is wired to the phase (L) of the mains cable.

The functioning of the thermostatic switch can be checked before using it
for the first time with the aid, for example, of hot water from a kettle and
a thermometer. Note that the rear cover panel has to be removed in order
to do this.
2.9.6. CONNECTING THE ambiente a4 H2O TO A
HEATING SYSTEM
Please note: The entire heating system should be planned in detail in
accordance with the relevant rules of the art and the safety standards
before installing the ambiente a4 H

the correct design of the pumps, fittings, piping and buffer tank used and
the safety components. We recommend minimum nominal dimensions for
heating pipes of: copper pipes: 22x1.0 mm or steel pipe: ¾". For cold water
pipes a nominal pipe size (copper pipe) of 15x1.0 and a flow pressure of 2.0
bar are sufficient for safe operation. Possible variant for integration of the

So: The heat required to heat 500 litres of water in a tank from 40°C to
70°C is 62,805 kJ (= 62,805 kWs) (disregarding any losses or heat drawn
within the system). That corresponds to approx. 17.4 kWh.
Assuming that the ambiente a4 H2O has an average output of approx. 5.4
kW it will take about 3.2 hours to heat up the entire tank (500 L). This
calculation is based on heating up the entire volume in the tank uniformly.
In an efficiently designed heating system the hot water is stored in layers
in the buffer tank, e.g. in a stratified storage system. That way, hot water is
available after heating up for only a short time and heat is available for use
shortly after circulation starts in the ambiente a4 H
2
O. Only surplus energy
not needed for heating is then stored in the buffer tank.
On very cold winter days an ambiente a4 H
2
O may sometimes be in oper-
ation for about 12 hours. The quantity of heat thus produced then corre-
sponds theoretically to 65 kWh. That quantity of heat would heat approx.
1,900 litres (from 40°C to 70°C). As a rule, though, heat is always drawn
off in such a situation and so overheating of the buffer tank (> 90°C) will
not occur.
This calculation does not take account of material heating occurring in the
buffer tank and pipes or radiation losses from the system components, etc.
Such factors extend the buffer tank heating-up time in practice.
2.9.7 LOAD UNIT (HEAT CHARGER) IN THE ambiente a4 H
2
O STOVES
As a general rule, the ambiente a4 H2O may only be operated with a load
unit (heat charger). In operation, the supply flow temperature should be at
least 65°C and the return temperature at least 62°C. In order to ensure that
these temperatures are guaranteed, a circulation pump / load unit (heat
charger) are to be installed in such a way that they will only start-up when
the temperature has reached 62°C. To reduce the danger of overshooting
the dew point, a “controllable” load unit (heat charger) is generally to be
installed. This involves capturing the control variable, which corresponds to
the effective return temperature at the entry to the water heat exchanger,
and adjusting it to the desired value.
We recommend the use of the load unit (heat charger) type LTC 141 from
the company ESBE, which is optionally available, or a comparable load unit
(heat charger). The use of other solutions (e.g. a four-way mixer) has not
proved successful in practice and is, therefore, not recommended.
We cannot accept any liability nor provide guarantee cover for any mal-
functions (sooting, deposits, etc.) or corrosion damage to the water heat
exchanger or chimney etc. that are due to a missing or non-effective load
unit (heat charger).

3. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Read these Installation and Operating Instructions through carefully before
installing or operating your stove. Make sure all objects are removed from
the fire chamber and the ash pan (except for the fire chamber lining).
Ask your specialist dealer to explain to you how to operate the ambiente
a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H
2
O/a5/a7/a8 stove and how it functions. National and
European standards and local regulations must be observed when operating
this fireplace.
3.1 GENERAL OPERATING INFORMATION
• Young children, the elderly or the frail: as with all heating appliances,
a guard should be fitted to protect the above persons because both
the glass door and the stove cover panels can become very hot in use.
Caution: Risk of burns! Never leave such individuals unsupervised near
a stove when it is lit or when the fire has just gone out. Please make
them aware of this hazard.
• The protective glove supplied is designed only for protection from heat when
operating the control handle and the cold hand. The glove is not fireproof.
• Never place any combustible objects on the exposed surfaces or cover
panels of the ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H
2
O/a5/a7/a8 stove. Never dry
washing on the stove. Racks for drying washing should always be placed
outside the radiant area of the stove.
• Burning fuel releases thermal energy which heats up the various parts
of the stove, such as the surfaces, the door, the door handle and control
handle, the viewing pane, the flue ducts, etc. These parts can get very
hot. Always take appropriate precautions when touching or operating hot
stove parts (e.g. use the protective glove).
• The ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H
2
O/a5/a7/a8 stove must always be
operated with the firebox door closed. The door should always be kept
closed, even when the stove is cold. The only times the door should be
opened are when lighting the stove, when putting on more wood or when
cleaning the stove.
• Do not modify the stove in any way. In particular, no parts that have
not been expressly approved by Spartherm shall be placed in the fire
chamber or in the flue gas or combustion air paths. Any modification to
the fireplace without such express approval will void the warranty and
operating permit.
• Extractor hoods, ventilators, etc. used at the same time as fireplaces in
the same room or in an adjoining room may interfere with the correct
functioning of the open flue stove (smoke may even escape into the
living room). Such ventilation systems should never be operated at the
same time as the stove unless appropriate precautions are taken.
• This stove has been designed for non-continuous use. It is not possible
to achieve continuous operation, even by shutting off the air supply,
and attempting this is not permissible. A longer heating period can be
achieved by the appropriate addition of more fuel.

• Do not place any combustible materials in the lower compartment of
the stove cover.
• Due to the low flue gas temperatures, a suitable flue gas system is
necessary (such as the Alkon made by Raab).

3.3 FUNCTIONING OF SWIVEL CONNECTOR
A swivel connector can only be used with the ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4 models
with top flue gas connection and must be specified when ordering. The
connector enables the stove to be rotated 180°, i.e. 90° to the left and 90°
to the right (Fig. 15a).
To rotate the stove, turn the lever (see Fig. 15b). After rotating the stove to
the desired position, raise the lever and turn it to the right to lock the stove
in position (see Fig. 15b).

3.4 RATING PLATE
The rating plate contains technical data and information. The rating plate
must not be removed, as it is proof that the stove has been tested and it is
needed for acceptance and for the annual inspections by the chimney sweep.

4. COMBUSTION
4.1 LIGHTING THE STOVE FOR THE FIRST TIME
The ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a5/a7/a8 stove must be assembled and installed
by a specialist contractor. Commissioning must always be carried out by an
expert from the installation firm. The owner / operator of the system must be
handed a certificate stating that the system has been properly installed and
all control and safety components have been correctly set and are operating
correctly (see sample in section „9.1 Commissioning report for ambiente
a1/a2/a3/a4/a5/a7/a8“ on page 46).
Only a moderate fire should be lit when using the stove for the first time. That
way, you avoid cracking the fire chamber lining (the lining may still contain
residual moisture at commissioning). Slowly increase the heat output the
next 3 to 5 times the stove is lit, up to about 30% above the nominal output,
to allow the anti-corrosion coating on the surfaces to burn in correctly. The
wood consumption will be approx. 2.5kg/h for a typical combustion period
of about 45 minutes. That corresponds to 1.8 kg wood per combustion
cycle, though the actual combustion duration can vary according to local
conditions. The colour of the coating may mellow slightly during this pro-
cess. Do not place any objects on the ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a5/a7/a8 and
do not touch the stove. An unpleasant odour, which is harmless to health,
may be given off during this process (sometimes accompanied by a small
amount of smoke). It is therefore important to ensure that the room is well
ventilated during the burning-in process. Open all the doors and windows
to let fresh air in.
Please note that slight expansion or contraction noises may be heard as the
stove heats up or cools down. Such noises occur as the material expands at
high temperatures, and are not a cause for concern.
4.1.1 COMMISSIONING THE ambiente a4 H2O
Heating systems must always be installed and set up by specialist con-
tractors. Commissioning must always be carried out by an expert from the
installation firm. The owner / operator of the system must be handed a
certificate stating that the system has been properly installed and all control
and safety components have been correctly set and are operating correctly.

Commissioning must not take place until all the necessary components have
been connected up, all necessary safety devices have been integrated and
are operational, the water heat exchanger has been filled and the system
has been vented. It is not permissible to operate the system without water,
when only partly filled or with safety devices that are not operational. It
may be necessary to vent the water heat exchanger several times at com-
missioning (refer to Figure 12b/12c, section „2.9.1 ambiente a4 H
2
O pipe
connections“ on page 21).
The operator must also be given detailed instructions on the operation,
functioning and maintenance of the entire system including all additional
components. The measures necessary to keep the system operating safely
must also be explained to the operator. Operator instruction must be docu-
mented in the commissioning record. The Installation and Operating Manual
should be kept in an easily accessible place near the ambiente a4 H
2
O.
Before commissioning it is important to check whether any objects are still
inside the fire chamber or in the ash pan. If so, remove them.
The stove is supplied with a ceramic fibre mat 3-5 mm thick on top of the
baffle plate of the fire chamber lining. This is needed to soak up any con-
densate occurring the first three times the stove is lit. Before lighting the
stove, check that the mat is lying snugly on top of the fireclay baffle plate. If
the mat is not in position, condensate can drip on to the fire chamber lining,
leaving permanent stains. The fibre mat can be removed after the stove has
been lit 2 or 3 times. Also, dirty condensate may leak from the bottom of
the fire chamber and may soil or damage the floor underneath the stove. An
absorbent material should therefore be placed under the stove the first few
times it is used, until there is no more condensate leakage.
Only a moderate fire should be lit when using the stove for the first time
(approx. 1.5 kg/h) to avoid cracking the fire chamber lining. There may still
be some residual moisture in the lining when the stove is lit for the first time.
That moisture can escape, e.g. via the air connection box and the rear wall,
the first few times the stove is lit. It is important to ensure that the fibre mat
is correctly positioned on top of the baffle plate. That way, the condensate will
be absorbed before it drips on to the fireclay and possibly causes stains. The
air inlet should be open during this time.
Slowly increase the heat output the next 3 to 5 times the stove is lit, up to
about 20% above the nominal output (wood consumption approx. 2.6 kg/h)
to allow the anti-corrosion coating on the surface of the stove to burn in cor-
rectly. An unpleasant odour, which is harmless to health, may be given off
during this process (sometimes accompanied by a small amount of smoke).
It is therefore important to ensure that the room is well ventilated during
the burning-in process. Open all the doors and windows to let fresh air in.
Please note that slight expansion or contraction noises may be heard as the

high temperatures, and are not a cause for concern.
4.2 CONTROLLING THE COMBUSTION AIR SUPPLY
The combustion air supply is infinitely adjustable with the aid of the air
adjustment lever, which is located below the door (see Fig. 16). The lever
must be operated with the firebox door closed.
Air supply open: When lighting the stove or when adding more wood, move
the lever all the way to the right. That delivers the maximum combustion air

flow to the firebox as primary air (through the grate) and as secondary air
(via the airwash) and post-combustion (located in the back wall).
On the ambiente a5 the air adjustment lever should be moved upwards. The
lever is located on the rear of the stove.
Restricted air flow: Adjustment lever roughly in the middle position. The
primary air supply is now closed off, so that the fire is not supplied with
too much air. The secondary air flows over the ceramic glass pane via the
airwash and post-combustion, which minimises sooting-up of the glass.
This is the normal position during combustion. The exact position depends
on local conditions and can be adjusted by the operator according to how
the stove is burning.
Air supply closed: Adjustment lever at the far left. In this position, no com-
bustion air is supplied to the fire chamber of the ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/
a4 H
2
O stove. Wait for all the fuel to burn away before closing off the air
supply. The air supply should always be closed when the stove is not in use.
On the ambiente a5 the air adjustment lever should be moved downwards.
The lever is located on the rear of the stove.

4.3 LIGHTING UP / BURNING
Lighting your stove is very easy if you follow the instructions below:
1. The ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H
2
O/a5/a7/a8 stove must not be operated
unless the fire chamber lining is correctly installed.
2. Switch off all extractor fans (kitchen, bathroom, toilet, etc.) That pre-
vents a partial vacuum occurring in the room where the stove is installed
and possible leakage of flue gases from the stove into the room. Check
the combustion air supply (open the flap if necessary).
3. Move the air adjustment lever to position A and open the firebox door
(refer to Fig. 16).
4. Build a pile of split kindling (soft wood is best) in the middle of the fire
chamber as shown.
5. Place some standard firelight-
ers underneath the pile to help light
the fire. (Paper is not recommended
as it burns away too quickly and
causes flying ash).
6. Never use spirit, lighter fuel,
oil or any other highly flammable
liquids.
7. Now light the fire by lighting the firelighters, and leave the firebox door
open about 3-5 cm. The fire should soon start burning strongly and
brightly.
8. Once the kindling is well alight you can add some small hardwood split
logs or larger softwood logs, piling them up on top.
9. Close the door once the logs are burning well. The air adjustment lever
remains in the far right position (air supply open) and it should stay in that
position for at least another 20-30 minutes to get the stove up to operating
temperature.

11. Once all the wood has fully
burned away, leaving only embers
from the first logs put on the fire,
more wood can be added as required
(hardwood is ideal).
12. According to the weather conditions, move the air adjustment lever more
or less to the centre position, or a little
beyond the centre (Fig. 16). Judging
how far to move it depends on expe-
rience and current conditions at the
place of use.
13. Do not wrench the door open, as
if you do that there is a risk that a sudden
drop in pressure will allow flue gas to
escape into the living room. Open the door slowly to begin with, just a crack.
14. By waiting till the ember stage before adding more wood you avoid the
risk of smoke escaping when the door is opened.
15. Avoid the temptation to put more than the recommended amount of
wood on the fire.
16. If your chimney is drawing too strongly, the fire will blaze up even with
only a minimal secondary air supply. Move the air adjustment lever
slightly to find the best position for controlled combustion. The farther
you move the adjustment lever towards the ‘air supply closed’ position,
the less air is delivered to the fire chamber. Take care not to shut off the
air supply too much, thus starving the fire of air (refer to section „4.4
Controlling the Heat Output“ on page 33).

4.3.1 ADDING MORE WOOD / FIRE OUT
Wait for the wood in the firebox to burn down to embers before adding
more wood.
1. Move the air adjustment lever to the fully open position (Fig. 16).
2. Open the firebox door very slowly (use the protective glove) to avoid
turbulence which can encourage smoke to leak out.
3. Place split logs on top of the embers (bark uppermost, cut surface to
the side). Make sure the air supply is open. The embers must not be
starved of air.
4. Close the firebox door (use the protective glove).
5. If the new wood does not start to burn straight away, leave the air adjust-
ment lever in the lighting position (far right) for about 2 to 5 minutes.
Wait for all the new wood to catch light before altering the air adjust-
ment lever position again.
The fire goes out when all the wood has been burned away and there is
no possibility of the fire continuing to
smoulder or incomplete combustion.
The air adjustment lever can now be
closed. Always leave the air adjustment
lever in the closed position when the
stove is not in use (refer to Fig. 16).
4.3.2 HOURLY WOOD CONSUMPTION
To avoid damage from overheating, such as discolouration of the steel,
deformation, etc. and to keep your stove operating efficiently even after
years of use, it is essential to stoke the stove correctly. To avoid the risk of
overheating, do not exceed the maximum heat output.
Please refer to section „2.2. Technical Data“ on page 7 for the
recommended hourly wood consumption. The individual pieces of
wood should be about 25 cm in circumference.
Please note: Increasing the wood feed beyond this amount may result in
overheating and damage to the stove. Wood pellets (briquettes) have an
appreciably higher heat output than hardwood. Hourly consumption when
using pellets should therefore be at least 20% lower than when burning
logs: approx. 1.5 kg/h for the a1/a2/a3/a4 and approx. 1.7 kg/h for the
a4 H
2
O/a5/a7/a8.
The warranty will be voided in cases of damage due to overheating (exces-
sive hourly wood consumption).
4.4 CONTROLLING THE HEAT OUTPUT
The heat output is controlled via the amount of fuel placed in the stove. Do
not attempt to slow down combustion drastically by reducing the air supply.
When burning wood, the result is incomplete combustion and, thus, wasted
fuel and unnecessary environmental pollution, as wood gives off gases even
when smouldering. That also increases the soot deposits on the viewing
panes. What is more, there is the risk of deflagration (explosive ignition of
the flue gases). Always ensure that the firebox door is tightly closed to avoid

accelerating combustion by an uncontrolled air supply. Your stove’s output
also depends on the chimney draught. The draught may be affected by
factors like the cross-section of the chimney or weather conditions (strong
winds, etc.).
4.5 ROOM HEATING CAPACITY / ROOM TEMPERATURE
The room heating capacity was previously quoted according to DIN standard
18893 (last issued August 1987) and is thus no longer relevant to modern
post-1990 homes. However, the old room heating capacity value may still be
of interest as a comparative value or for use in the case of older structures
pre-dating the 1977 thermal insulation standard.
A nominal heat output of 5.0 kW for the a1/a2/a3/a4, 8.0 kW for the a4 H
2
O,
7.0 kW for the a5 and 5.9 kW for the a7/a8 corresponds to the following
room heating capacity when operated as intermittent heating (i.e. with
breaks in operation of less than 8 hours):

Direct room heating not including water heating
A detailed explanation of ‘favourable’, ‘less favourable’ and ‘unfavourable’
can be found in DIN standard 18893. Simply put, ‘favourable’ describes a
situation where the room has only one external wall and otherwise mainly
adjoins heated internal rooms, whereas ‘unfavourable’ refers to a room with
two external walls and adjoining unheated rooms.
The values indicated above refer to structures pre-dating the 1977 ther-
mal insulation standard. They represent a simplification which is valid for
room sizes up to 200 m³. DIN 18893 standard recommended a calcula-
tion according to DIN 4701 for rooms larger than 200 m³. Nowadays, an
estimate according to TR-OL is preferable or, in particular, the calculation
should be based on DIN 12831.
4.6 HEATING IN THE TRANSITIONAL PERIOD / UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS
In the transitional period, when the outside temperature is above approx.
15°C, or during unfavourable weather conditions (down winds, etc.), disrup-
tion to the chimney draught may occur due to sudden rises in temperature,
with the result that the flue gases are not completely extracted. In these
circumstances a smaller amount of fuel should be placed in the stove and
the air adjustment lever should be moved to the maximum position (refer
to section „4.2 Controlling the Combustion Air Supply“ on page 30, Fig.
16). The fuel in the stove will then burn away faster (with more flames). This
will help to stabilise the chimney draught. To avoid resistance in the firebed,
it should be carefully raked at frequent intervals to remove the ash. The air
supply can be reduced slightly (middle position) when the chimney draught
has stabilised.

4.7 OPERATION OF THE WATER HEAT EXCHANGER WITH THE ambiente a4 H
2
O
The firebox door should only be operated in
mode A1. Tampering with the closing system
is not permissible.
The water heat exchanger is operated via
the lever behind the stove at the right-hand
side (cf. Fig. 11). This switches between the
lighting-up/adding more fuel position and the
combustion position. The lever does not have
an intermediate position.

Combustion position (Fig. 17 A) The lever is right at the top. All the flue gas
will now be routed via the ambiente a4 H
2
O’s water heat exchanger. Wait for
the stove to heat up fully, the fuel to catch light and embers to form before
moving the lever to this position. That normally takes about 15-20 minutes.
Lighting or fresh fuel phase (Fig. 17 B) The lever is right at the bottom.
The flue gas bypasses the ambiente a4 H
2
O’s heat exchanger. That allows the
chimney draught to develop as quickly and effectively as possible.
To keep the ambiente a4H
2
O operating efficiently, be sure to add wood in time
to prevent the flue gas temperature dropping too low.
5. FUEL
The foundation “Wald in Not” (Forest in Danger) put it aptly in one of their
information brochures: “Wood does not cause any burden for nature. Wood
is stored energy from the sun. Sunlight, water and carbon dioxide are the
building blocks from which wood is created. Sunlight is chemically bonded
during the whole life of the tree. The sun’s energy is stored in lignin and
cellulose. This energy is set free again when the wood is burnt! You can find
out more information on the internet site www.wald-in-not.de.
Fireplaces may only be operated using fuels that correspond to the 1st
BlmSchV regulations. Only firewood (recommended residual moisture 20%
or less) or wood briquettes according to DIN 51731 are permissible for use
in stoves.
Incidentally: A measuring device for determining the moisture of firewood
does not cost very much and quickly pays off.
No other type of fuel may be used!
Therefore, it is not permissible to burn the following:
• Varnished or plastic-coated wood
• Chipboard or wood that has been treated with wood preservatives
• Wood originating from Europool palettes
• Waste, household rubbish and old clothes
• Paper, paper briquettes, cardboard
• Damp wood (residual moisture over 20%)
• Plastics / foam material of any sort
• Solid or liquid materials damaging to wood

It is prohibited to burn these and other unsuitable materials in your stove.
If materials other than the approved fuels of firewood or wood briquettes
according to DIN 51713 are burnt, this can lead to the formation of dan-
gerous gasses and disruption to the burning process right through to
deflagration.
The guarantee is rendered void if the ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H
2
O/a5/a7/
a8 stove is operated using non-approved fuels.
Use small pieces of wood to get the fire going. Only used chopped wood as
a fuel that is no thicker than approx. 8 cm at its thickest point. The optimal
length of the wood is approx. 25 cm. Do not add too much wood to the fire;
it is preferable to add small volumes of wood. When adding wood to the fire,
the embers must not be completely covered.
5.1 CO2 NEUTRALITY
Wood only releases as much carbon dioxide as it collected and trapped from
the air as a tree. It is irrelevant in this case whether the wood is burned or
rots in the forest – the carbon dioxide released always remains the same.
New trees absorb the carbon dioxide that is released from the wood during
burning – a closed natural carbon dioxide cycle is produced.
Conclusion: Nature remains in a state of equilibrium as a result of burning
wood. Germany has regulated the sustainable management of forests by
law. This obligation has led to a growth in the volume of wood because
the increase in wood grown in forests is on average 40% greater than the
volume of firewood and timber used.
5.1.1 STORING WOOD
In general, it is recommended to store firewood for approx. 2-3 years, the
wood should be protected from dampness and well ventilated (e.g. under a
roof overhang on a side of the building protected from the weather). Wood with
moisture content < 20% will be achieved significantly quicker with optimal
storage. Therefore, you should store your firewood already chopped because
the bark can prevent the moisture escaping from the wood. You should leave
a distance the width of a hand between the logs for good ventilation so that
the air can circulate properly and the moisture escaping from the wood can
be taken away by the air. A distance to the floor of approx. 20-30 cm should
be maintained underneath the stack of wood. Renewed absorption of moisture
due to precipitation (e.g. rain or snow) should be avoided. Storing wood in
garages, under plastic sheets or in poorly ventilated cellars is not recom-
mended because the moisture present in the wood cannot escape properly.
Use an easily obtainable wood moisture measuring device to check your fuel.
5.2 YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Whether your a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H2O/a5/a7/a8 stove burns in an environmen-
tally friendly way is dependent to a large degree on how it is operated and
which fuel is used. The following advice should help you to operate your
stove in an environmentally friendly way:
• As far as possible, do not use any resinous wood (spruce, pine, fir).
These types of wood cause sooting of the stove panel to occur quicker
and there is an increase in flying sparks. Therefore, please only use
hardwoods (birch, beech, oak, wood from fruit trees) for safety reasons.

• Adjust the volume of wood used to the relevant heating requirements.
• We recommend purchasing a wood moisture measuring device.
You can check whether a clean and low-emission burning process is
taking place in your stove as follows:
• The ash should be white. A darker colour indicates residual charcoal and
incomplete burning.
• The exhaust gases from the chimney pot should be as clear as possible
after the lighting phase (the clearer the exhaust gases, the better the
burning process).
• The firebox lining in your stove should be light and not sooted after
burning.
Note: The fireplace may not be used as a waste incinerator! Further-
more, this stove is designed for temporary burning. Permanent oper-
ation can also not be achieved due to the extraction of combustion
air and is not permitted!
6. CLEANING AND CARE
The stove may only be cleaned in a cold state. Please note that cleaning can
lead to soiling of the installation room and your clothing. We recommend
that you protect the area around the opening to the fireplace from soiling
with a plastic sheet or a blanket and that you wear work clothes. All disman-
tled components must be installed again after cleaning.
6.1 CLEANING THE FIREBOX / OUTER CASING
• The stove, the firebox, the smoke collection chamber with the exhaust
gas control system, the combustion air system and the connecting flue
pipes to the chimney must be inspected for deposits and, if necessary,
cleaned at regular intervals on a yearly basis and also perhaps during
and after the heating season and after the chimney has been cleaned
(consult your stove dealer or chimney sweep in your district). Remove
any deposits using a hand brush and/or an ash vacuum cleaner (special-
ist dealer).The chimney is to be cleaned by a chimney sweep at regular
intervals! Furthermore, the stove should be inspected each year by a
specialist.
• Exhaust gas control system: An additional exhaust gas deflector can be
found above the fireplace and in the exhaust gas collection chamber.
These components should be cleaned regularly. The exhaust gas deflec-
tors can be removed in order to complete this task. They need to be
lifted, then tilted and can be removed through the firebox. The deposits
on the deflectors can be cleaned off easily using a hand brush.
• Ash removal: Your ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/a4 H
2
O/a5/a7/a8 stove is
suitable for burning dry wood, which burns best in its own ash. If you
nevertheless want to remove the ash from the firebox, open the stove
door. Lift the grate out of the firebox and brush (using a standard fire-
place tool set) the ash into the ash tray located below. The ash tray can
be removed in an upwards direction in order to dispose of the contents
in the correct manner.

If you want to remove the ash from the fire chamber, open the stove door
and swing open the stove cover panel below the door. Lift the grate out of

the fire chamber and brush off the ash (using an ordinary fireside compan-
ion set) into the ash pan underneath. Remove the ash pan and dispose of
the contents properly.
• Please note that the embers can still be burning up to 24 hours later or
even longer!
• Cleaning the ceramic glass panel: The glass panel can be easily cleaned
using standard fireplace glass cleaner, which you can also obtain from
your specialist dealer. Finally, wipe the glass panel with a dry cloth (do
not smudge on the glass panel!). The glass fibre seals should not be
soaked with cleaning fluids!
• Varnished surfaces and the outer casing can be cleaned using a damp
cloth (do not use a microfiber cloth!).
• Glass surfaces can be cleaned using a standard glass cleaner and a soft
cloth (do not use a microfiber cloth!).
• Stainless steel surfaces can be cleaned using a standard stainless steel
cleaner. This is only to be applied in the direction of the finish!
• Natural stone surfaces can be cleaned with a damp cloth or correspond-
ing standard cleaner!
• Ceramic surfaces can be cleaned with a damp cloth or corresponding
standard cleaner!
Regularly remove dust from above and below the stove during the heating
season because the dust particles may burn or char. This can lead to soiling
of the installation room and the furniture within.
6.1.1 CLEANING THE WATER HEAT EXCHANGER IN

Cleaning the water heat exchanger is essential. The stove can achieve its full
effectiveness when it is regularly and properly maintained/cleaned. As a general
rule, cleaning is to be carried out in a cooled-down state!
Because the water heat exchanger directly cools the exhaust gasses from the
ambiente a4 H
2
O and this inevitably leads to deposits forming on the water heat
exchanger, it is necessary to regularly clean it using the integrated cleaning
system. The cleaning process should be carried out weekly to avoid the cleaning
mechanism become locked in place (caused by e.g. condensation/sooting due
to non-functioning fittings or missing components etc.). A visual inspection of
the cleaning mechanism should be carried out every 4 weeks.
The frequency of the cleaning is also dependent on a variety of factors
(intensity of use, length of fire, fuel, “drawing” performance of chimney,
etc.) and it is not possible to
give general cleaning intervals. If
no significant deposits etc have
occurred after the first week of use
then the cleaning intervals can be
extended a little.
Cleaning process:
The operating handle is included
in the delivery of the stove and
should be inserted into the 20 mm
hole on the upper left side of the
stove for cleaning purposes. Once

inserted, the handle should be turned approx. 5 times to the right and to
the left until the limit stops (approx. 20° rotation angle). When inserting the
operating handle, it is important to ensure that the handle does not knock
against the painted/varnished edges of the stove.
The soot released during the cleaning process automatically falls onto the
deflector plate in the firebox and should be cleaned out at least 2 x per
season.
6.2 FIREBOX LINING
During the warming-up phase it is normal for the lining to be covered by a
dark coating. Once the operating temperature is reached this layer on the
firebox lining will have burnt off. Cracks are not considered grounds for a
justified complaint. The lining is subject to very high stresses. An expansion
or contraction crack is not serious and is not a functional defect. However,
any parts of the fire chamber lining that are broken and have moved out of
position need to be replaced. If replacement fireclay is required, this can be
ordered from your heating contractor under the appropriate order number,
stating your stove model (refer to Figs. 19-22).

6.3 CHIMNEY FIRE
When burning wood (especially softwood), sparks can often be transferred
from the fireplace to the chimney. These sparks can set light to the layer of
soot in the chimney (this only occurs rarely if the chimney has been regu-
larly cleaned by a chimney sweep). The chimney will then burn. This can be
recognised by flames blazing out of the chimney outlet, heavy flying sparks,
smoke and odours or an increasingly hot chimney stack. It is important in
these cases to handle the situation correctly. The fire brigade should be
notified via the relevant emergency number. In addition, a chimney sweep

should be informed about the situation. Combustible objects should be
moved away from the chimney.
Warning from experts: Do not attempt to put out the fire with water while
waiting. The temperatures in a chimney fire can reach up to 1300 °C. The
extinguishing water will immediately turn to steam. A 10 litre bucket of
water results in 17 m
3
of steam. The enormous pressure that results can
break the chimney apart.
Once the chimney fire has burnt itself out, the chimney must be examined
by a specialist for cracks or leakages and, if required, repaired accordingly.
6.4 MAINTENANCE
The door seal must be checked on a regular basis. If necessary, this seal is
to be replaced (due to wear, breakage etc.).
The firebox lining must be checked at regular intervals. It consists of natural
products that are subject to expansion and contraction during every heating
process. Cracks can occur as a result. As long as the firebox lining retains
its position in the fireplace and doesn’t break, it remains fully functional.
A yearly service of the stove carried out by a specialist is indispensible to
ensure fault-free functionality (where possible, before the heating season)!
The fireplace may not be modified!
Only original replacement parts that have been approved by the manufac-
turer may be used! Please contact your specialist dealer should you require
any parts!
6.4.1. MAINTENANCE OF THE WATER HEAT EXCHANGER IN THE ambiente a4 H
2
O
Carrying out maintenance on the ambiente a4 H2O is essential. The ambiente
a4 H
2
O can only achieve its full effectiveness when it is regularly and prop-
erly maintained. A technical heating inspection of all safety devices (thermal
discharge safety device, etc.) is required each year before the heating
season. This inspection may only be carried out by a specialist company.
We recommend that you agree a service contract with your specialist
company. This ensures that the yearly safety inspections will be reliably
carried out before the heating season. All yearly safety inspections are to
be documented!
6.4.2 BLEEDING AIR OUT OF THE WATER HEAT
EXCHANGER IN THE ambiente a4 H
2
O
The bleeding process is carried out in the area of the heating connections
in the lower compartment. The bleeding vent is opened using the bleeding
key. A suitable collection container or a large cloth should be kept ready
to collect any escaping water. A small hose can also be attached to the
bleeding vent. Once the vent has been opened, water will initially escape
from the bleed hose and then air will follow after a few seconds. After the
air has escaped through the vent, it should be kept fully open for a further
five seconds.
The system should be bled:
• Before and during the first use of the stove.
• Daily for the following weeks until no more air escapes.
• When noises (air bubbles) can be heard in the heat exchanger.
• When the pressure of the home water provision is adjusted.

7. TROUBLESHOOTING
You can rectify the following problems with your ambiente a1/a2/a3/a4/
a4 H
2
O/a5/a7/a8 independently, please contact your stove builder or fitter
for all other problems.
7.1 GLASS EXPERIENCING HEAVY, QUICK AND IRREGULAR SOOTING
If this did not occur from the very beginning, please check the following points:
• Are the correct fuel and technology being used?
• Is the combustion air control fully opened? (control lever turned fully to
the left)?
• Is the external combustion air flue unblocked?
• Does the sooting occur within half an hour? (gradual soiling during oper-
ation of the system is normal. A car windscreen will also become soiled
during a journey!) To resolve the problem, ensure that no pieces of wood
are in direct contact with the glass panel or in very close proximity to it.
• Is the firebox insulation a perfect fit?
• Is the wood dry enough?
• Has enough wood been added to the fire? (when the volume of wood is
too low, an insufficiently high temperature is achieved in the fireplace)
7.2 FIRE IS DIFFICULT TO LIGHT
If this did not occur from the very beginning, please check the following points:
• Are the correct fuel and technology being used?
• Is the wood dry enough?
• Is the wood too thick?
• Has the air intake been sufficiently guaranteed?
• Are you in the transitional period?
• Are you experiencing atmospheric inversion?
• Is the combustion air control fully opened?
• Is the external combustion air flue unblocked?
7.3 SMOKE LEAKAGE WHEN ADDING WOOD TO THE FIRE
If this did not occur from the very beginning, please check the following
points:
• See all questions in Point 7.1
• Has the burnt-through phase been reached?
• Is the bypass valve open?
• Has the required low pressure been achieved?
• Is the chimney unblocked?
• Has your stove already reached its operating temperature?
• Did you open the door slowly at the beginning?
7.4 FIRE BURNS TOO QUICKLY / WOOD CONSUMP­TION TOO HIGH
If this did not occur from the very beginning, please check the following points:
• Has the wood been cut to a sufficient size?
• Is the chimney drawing air too strongly?
• Have your reduced the combustion air control (control lever turned fully
to the left)?
• Are you using solid hardwood with 15-18 % residual moisture?
• Is the door completely closed?
• Have you kept to the recommended volume of wood?

7.5 WATER HEAT EXCHANGER IN THE ambiente a4 H2O
Description of problem Cause / Solution
Thermal discharge safety device is constantly being triggered (constant discharge of water through the discharge valve). The water heat exchanger cannot pass on heat to the heating system.
• The accumulator tank is “full”.
Attention: Extract heat from the accumulator tank.
• Check the functionality and settings of the pump thermostat and the load unit (heat charger).
• Set the pump setting one level higher (larger flow rate).
• Circulation pump is not running. Is the electricity connection defect?
• Bleed air from the stove.
• Check the system pressure.
Water escapes onto the floor area of the stove during the first few uses.
• Insofar as the stove and the heating installation have been sub­jected to a pressure test after the installation, the escaping water is condensation from the fuel and the firebox lining. If more than
0.2 litres of water accumulates then the heating system pressure needs to be tested.
Gurgling noises in the water heat exchanger. Air in the system.
• Check the system pressure.
• Bleed the air from the system at the vent. In newly filled or topped up systems, it can take some time until all of the air has collected. Bleeding the air out of the system once is often not sufficient.
Thermal discharge safety device is dripping.
• Rinse out the thermal discharge safety device by pressing the red button on the fitting.
• Check the fitting of the connection seals and the pistons (see instructions for thermal discharge safety device).
• If required, integrate a filter into the system before the thermal discharge safety device (observe the minimum flow rate!)
Radiators are not heating up. Radiators that are not located in the installation room are cold.
• Radiator thermostats close when the set room temperature is achieved. The convection heat from the fireplace is being distributed into connecting rooms.
• The heating system is sluggish depending on the configuration. It takes a little time until the heating system passes on the heat.
• Hydraulically balance the heating system.
• Check the functionality of the heat circulation pump.
• Increase the amount of fuel used.
Description of problem Cause / Solution
Greater and quicker soiling of the firebox lining and the ceramic glass panel. The firebox lining no longer burns free any soiling. Fire can only be lit with difficulty
• Remove deposits in the heat exchanger and in the connecting flue pipes to the chimney.
• Check the correct functionality of the pump thermostat
• Ensure correct burning, wood feed quantities, wood moisture con­tent < 20%

8. GENERAL WARRANTY TERMS AND
CONDITIONS
8.1 SCOPE OF APPLICATION
These General Warranty Terms and Conditions apply to the relationship
between the manufacturer, Spartherm Feuerungstechnik GmbH, and the
dealer/intermediary. They are not the same as the contract and warranty
terms and conditions which the dealer/intermediary passes on or may pass
on to its customers in a particular case.

8.2 GENERAL INFORMATION
This quality manufactured product is state of the art. The materials used
were meticulously selected and are constantly checked, as is our production
process. Setting up or installing this product requires specialized knowl-
edge. Our products may therefore only be installed and commissioned by
specialized firms and in compliance with statutory regulations as amended.
8.3 WARRANTY PERIOD
The General Warranty Terms and Conditions apply only within the Federal
Republic of Germany, and European Union The warranty period and scope
of the warranty in accordance with these terms and conditions shall apply
apart from the statutory guarantee, which remains unaffected. Spartherm
Feuerungstechnik GmbH gives a 5-year warranty
• Basic body, fireplace inserts
• Basic body, stoves
• Basic body, fireplace cassettes
• Basic body, fireplace doors
Spartherm Feuerungstechnik GmbH gives a 24-month warranty on elevating
mechanisms, operating devices such as handles, adjustment levers, shock
absorbers, electronic and electrical components such as exhausters, gover-
nors, original spare parts, all purchased parts and safety devices.
Spartherm Feuerungstechnik GmbH gives a 6-month warranty on wearing
parts around the fire, such as fireclay bricks, vermiculite, fire grates, seals
and glass ceramics.
8.4 REQUIREMENT OF EFFECTIVENESS FOR THE WARRANTY
The warranty period starts on the date of delivery to the dealer/intermediary.
This must be verified from a document such as an invoice with the dealer/
intermediary’s confirmation of delivery. The warranty certificate relating to
the product must be produced by the claimant when making a warranty
claim.
If such proof is not produced Spartherm Feuerungstechnik GmbH shall not
be obliged to honour the warranty.
8.5 WARRANTY EXCLUSIONS
The warranty does not cover:
• Wear and tear to the product
• Fireclay bricks vermiculite: These are natural products subjected to
expansion and contraction during the heating process. This may create
cracks. For as long as the linings remain in position in the fire chamber
and do not break up, they remain fully functional.
• the surfaces: Discoloration of the enammelenamel or galvanized sur-
faces caused by thermal stress or overload.
• the elevating mechanism: If the installation instructions are not correctly
followed, resulting in overheating of the pulleys and bearings.
• the seals: Reduced sealing due to thermal stress and hardening.
• the glass ceramics: Soiling caused by soot or burnt-in residues of burnt
materials as well as visibly changed colour or other aspects due to ther-
mal stress.
• Improper transport and/or incorrect storage

• Improper handling of fragile components such as glass and ceramics
• Improper handling and/or use
• Lack of maintenance
• Incorrect installation or connection of the unit
• Non-observance of the installation and operating instructions
• Technical modifications to the unit by third parties
8.6 DEFECT REMEDIATION / REPAIRS
Notwithstanding the statutory guarantee, which shall take precedence over
our warranty during the statutory guarantee periods, within the scope of
our warranty we will remedy free of charge all defects demonstrably due
to a material fault or manufacturing error, provided that the other terms
and conditions of this warranty undertaking are observed. In accordance
with this warranty undertaking Spartherm Feuerungstechnik GmbH reserves
the right either to rectify the defect or to replace the unit free of charge.
Remediation of defects shall take precedence.
This warranty undertaking expressly does not cover further compensation
exceeding the statutory guarantee.
8.7 EXTENSION OF WARRANTY
In the case of performance in accordance with the terms of the warranty,
whether remediation of defects or replacement of a unit, the warranty period
shall be extended in respect of the replacement unit/components.
8.8 SPARE OF WARRANTY
No spare parts other than those produced or recommended by the manu-
facturer shall be used.
8.9 LIABILITY
Damage and compensation claims not based on a defective unit supplied
by Spartherm Feuerungstechnik GmbH are excluded and are not covered by
the warranty undertaking.
This does not apply to statutory warranty claims arising in a particular case.
8.10 N OTE
Your specialist dealer/contractor will gladly advise and assist you in matters
not covered by our warranty terms and conditions and undertakings. We
particularly advise you to have your fireplace insert/stove serviced regularly
by a stove fitter.
