SAFETY CHECK-OUT
After correcting the original service problem, perform the following safety checks before releasing the set to the customer:
1. Check the area of your repair for unsoldered or poorly-soldered connections. Check the entire board surface for solder splashes and bridges.
2. Check the interboard wiring to ensure that no wires are “pinched” or contact high-wattage resistors.
3. Look for unauthorized replacement parts, particularly transistors, that were installed during a previous repair. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
4. Look for parts which, though functioning, show obvious signs of deterioration. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
5. Check the line cord for cracks and abrasion. Recommend the replacement of any such line cord to the customer.
6. Check the B+ voltage to see it is at the values specified.
7. Check the antenna terminals, metal trim, “metallized” knobs, screws, and all other exposed metal parts for AC leakage. Check leakage as described below.
To Exposed Metal Parts on Set

Fig. A. Using an AC voltmeter to check AC leakage.

AC voltmeter (0.75 V)
LEAKAGE TEST
The AC leakage from any exposed metal part to earth ground and from all exposed metal parts to any exposed metal part having a return to chassis, must not exceed 0.5 mA (500 microamperes). Leakage current can be measured by any one of three methods.
1. A commercial leakage tester , such as the Simpson 229 or RCA
WT -540A. Follow the manuf acturers' instructions to use these
instruments.
2. A battery-operated AC milliammeter. The Data Precision 245
digital multimeter is suitable for this job.
3. Measuring the voltage drop across a resistor by means of a
VOM or battery-operated AC voltmeter. The “limit” indica-
tion is 0.75V, so analog meters must have an accurate low-
voltage scale. The Simpson 250 and Sanwa SH-63T rd are ex-
amples of a passive VOM that is suitable. Nearly all battery
operated digital multimeters that have a 2V A C range are suit-
able. (See Fig. A)
Unleaded solder
Boards requiring use of unleaded solder are printed with the leadfree mark (LF) indicating the solder contains no lead. (Caution: Some printed circuit boards may not come printed with the lead free mark due to their particular size.)
: LEAD FREE MARK
Unleaded solder has the following characteristics.
• Unleaded solder melts at a temperature about 40°C higher than
ordinary solder. Ordinary soldering irons can be used but the iron tip has to be applied to the solder joint for a slightly longer time. Soldering irons using a temperature regulator should be set to about 350°C. Caution: The printed pattern (copper foil) may peel away if the heated tip is applied for too long, so be careful!
• Strong viscosity
Unleaded solder is more viscous (sticky , less prone to flow) than ordinary solder so use caution not to let solder bridges occur such as on IC pins, etc.
• Usable with ordinary solder
It is best to use only unleaded solder but unleaded solder may also be added to ordinary solder.
WARNING!!
WHEN SERVICING, DO NO T APPR O A CH THE LASER EXIT WITH THE EYE TOO CLOSELY. IN CASE IT IS NECESSARY TO CONFIRM LASER BEAM EMISSION, BE SURE TO OBSERVE FROM A DISTANCE OF MORE THAN 25 cm FROM THE SURFACE OF THE OBJECTIVE LENS ON THE OPTICAL PICK-UP BLOCK.
SAFETY-RELATED COMPONENT WARNING!!
COMPONENTS IDENTIFIED BY MARK 0 OR DOTTED LINE WITH MARK 0 ON THE SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS AND IN THE PARTS LIST ARE CRITICAL TO SAFE OPERATION. REPLACE THESE COMPONENTS WITH SONY PARTS WHOSE PART NUMBERS APPEAR AS SHOWN IN THIS MANUAL OR IN SUPPLEMENTS PUBLISHED BY SONY.
CAUTION:
The use of optical instrument with this product will increase eye hazard.
CAUTION
Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in hazardous radiation exposure.

About MP3 audio tracks
You can play MP3 audio tracks on CDROMs, CD-Rs, or CD-RWs. However, the discs must be record ed according to ISO9660 level 1, level 2, or Joliet f ormat for the player to recognize the tra cks. You can also play discs recorded in Multi Session.
See the instructions of the CD-R/RW device or recording software (not supp lied) for details on the recording format.
To play a Multi Session CD
This player can play Multi Session CDs when an MP3 audio track is located in the first session. Any subsequent MP3 audio tracks, recorded in the later sessions, can also be played back. When audio tracks and images in music CD format or video CD format are recorded in the first session, only the first session will be played back.
Notes
• If you put the extension “.MP3” to data not in MP3 format, the player cannot recognize the data properly and will generate a loud noise which could damage your speaker system.
•The player cannot play audio tracks in MP3PRO format.

Glossary
Chapter (page 9)
Sections of a picture or a music fe ature that are smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters. Depend ing on the disc, no chapters may be record ed.
Dolby Digital (page 24, 69)
Digital audio compression tec hnology developed by Dolby Laboratories . This technology conforms t o 5.1-channel surround sound. The rear channel is stereo and there is a discrete subwoofer channel in this format. Dolby Digital provides the same 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital audio found in Dolby Digital cinema audio systems. Good channel separation is realized because all of the channel data are re corded discretely and little deterioration is realized because all channel data processing is digital.
Dolby Surround (Pro Logic) (page 23)
Audio signal processing technology that Dolby Laboratories developed for surround sound. When the input signal contains a surround component, the Pr o Logic process outputs the front, center an d rear signals. The rear channel is mona ural.
DTS (page 24, 69)
Digital audio compression technol ogy that Digital Theater Systems, Inc. developed. This technology conforms t o 5.1-channel surround sound. The rear channel is stereo and there is a discrete subwoofer channel in this format. DTS provides the same 5.1 d iscrete channels of high quality digital audio. Good channel separation is re alized because all of the channel data is recorded discretely and little deterioration is realized because all channel data processing is digital.
DVD VIDEO (page 6)
A disc that contains up to 8 hours of mo ving pictures even though its diamet er is the same as a CD. The data capacity of a single-layer and singlesided DVD is 4.7 GB (G iga Byte), which is 7 times that of a CD. The data capacity of a double-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5
GB, a single-layer and double-sided DVD is
9.4 GB, and double-layer and double-sided DVD is 17GB. The picture data uses the MPE G 2 format, one of the worldwide standards of digital compression technology. The picture data is compressed to about 1/40 (average ) of its original size. The DVD also uses a variable rate coding technology that changes the d ata to be allocated according to the sta tus of the picture. Audio information is recorded in a multi-channel format, such as Dolby Digital, allowing you to enjoy a more real audio presence. Furthermore, various advanced functions such as the multi-angle, multilingual, and Parental Control functions are provided with the DVD.
DVD-RW (page 6)
A DVD-RW is a recordable and rewritable disc with the same size as the DVD VIDEO. The DVD-RW can be recorded in two different modes: VR mode and Video mode. VR (Video Recording) mode enable s various programming and editing functions, some of which are limited in the case of Video mode. Video mode complies with DVD VIDEO format and can be played on other DVD players while a DVD-RW recorded in VR mode can only be played on DVD-RW compliant players. The “DVD-RW” appearing in this manual, and the on-screen displays refer to DVD-RWs in VR mode.
Film based software, Video based software (page 66)
DVDs can be classified as Film ba sed or Video based software. Film based DVDs contain the same images (24 frames per second) that are shown at movie theaters. Video based DVDs, such as television dramas or sit-coms, displays images at 30 frames (or 60 fields) per second.
Index (CD)/Video Index (VIDEO CD) (page
9)
A number that divides a track into sections to easily locate the point you want on a CD or VIDEO CD. Depending on the disc, no index may be recorded.
