WHEN SERVICING, DO NOT APPROACH THE LASER EXIT WITH THE EYE TOO CLOSELY. IN CASE IT IS NECESSARY TO CONFIRM LASER BEAM EMISSION, BE SURE TO OBSERVE FROM A DISTANCE OF MORE THAN 25 cm FROM THE SURFACE OF THE OBJECTIVE LENS ON THE OPTICAL PICK-UP BLOCK.
CAUTION:
The use of optical instrument with this product will increase eye hazard.
CAUTION
Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in hazardous radiation exposure.
SAFETY-RELATED COMPONENT WARNING!!
COMPONENTS IDENTIFIED BY MARK 0 OR DOTTED LINE WITH MARK 0 ON THE SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS AND IN THE PARTS LIST ARE CRITICAL TO SAFE OPERATION. REPLACE THESE COMPONENTS WITH SONY PARTS WHOSE PART NUMBERS APPEAR AS SHOWN IN THIS MANUAL OR IN SUPPLEMENTS PUBLISHED BY SONY.
Unleaded solder
Boards requiring use of unleaded solder are printed with the leadfree mark (LF) indicating the solder contains no lead. (Caution: Some printed circuit boards may not come printed with the lead free mark due to their particular size.)
: LEAD FREE MARK
Unleaded solder has the following characteristics.
Unleaded solder melts at a temperature about 40°C higher than ordinary solder. Ordinary soldering irons can be used but the iron tip has to be applied to the solder joint for a slightly longer time. Soldering irons using a temperature regulator should be set to about 350°C. Caution: The printed pattern (copper foil) may peel away if the heated tip is applied for too long, so be careful!
Strong viscosity Unleaded solder is more viscous (sticky, less prone to flow) than ordinary solder so use caution not to let solder bridges occur such as on IC pins, etc.
Usable with ordinary solder It is best to use only unleaded solder but unleaded solder may also be added to ordinary solder.
SAFETY CHECK-OUT
After correcting the original service problem, perform the following safety checks before releasing the set to the customer.
1. Check the area of your repair for unsoldered or poorly-soldered connections. Check the entire board surface for solder splashes and bridges.
2. Check the interboard wiring to ensure that no wires are "pinched" or contact high-wattage resistors.
3. Look for unauthorized replacement parts, particularly transistors, that were installed during a previous repair. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
4. Look for parts which, through functioning, show obvious signs of deterioration. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
5. Check the B+ voltage to see it is at the values specified.
6. Flexible Circuit Board Repairing
• Keep the temperature of the soldering iron around 270˚C during repairing.
• Do not touch the soldering iron on the same conductor of the circuit board (within 3 times).
• Be careful not to apply force on the conductor when soldering or unsoldering.

About MP3 audio tracks
You can play MP3 audio tracks on CD ROMs, CD-Rs, or CD-RWs. However, the discs must be recorded acc ording to ISO9660 level 1, level 2, or Joliet format for the player to recognize the tracks. You can also play discs recorded in Multi Session. See the instructions of the CD-R /RW device or recording software (not supplied) for details on the recording format.
To play a Multi Session CD
This player can play Multi Sessi on CDs when an MP3 audio track is located in the first session. Any subsequent MP3 audio tracks, recorded in the later s essions, can also be played back. When audio tracks and images in music CD format or video CD format are recorded in the first session, only the first session w ill be played back.
Notes
If you put the extension .M P3 to data not in MP3 format, the player cannot recognize the data properly and will generate a loud noise which could damage your speaker system.
The player cannot play audio tra cks in MP3PRO format.
The playback order of MP3 audio tracks
The playback order of album s and tracks recorded on a DATA CD is as follows.
Structure of disc contents
Tree 1 Tree 2 Tree 3 Tree 4 Tree 5
ROOT

track
When you insert a DATA CD and press H, the numbered tracks are play ed sequentially,
1 through 7. Any sub- albums/tracks
from contained within a currently selected album take priority over the next album in the same tree. (Example: C contains D so before
5.)
When you press MENU and the list of MP3 albums appears (page 37 ), the albums are arranged in the following order: A t B t C t D t F t G. Albums that do not contain tracks (such as album E) do not appear in the list.
z Hints
If you add numbers (01, 02, 03, etc.) to the front of the track names, the tracks will be played in that order.
Since a disc with many tree s takes longer to start playback, place your albums within the first two trees.
4 is played
Notes
Depending on the software you use to creat e the DATA CD, the playback order may differ from the illustration above.
The playback order above may not be applicable if there are more than a total of 200 albums and tracks in the DATA CD.
The player can recognize up to 100 albums (the player will count just albums, including albums that do not contain MP3 audio tracks). The player will not play any albums beyond t he first 100 albums. Of the first 100 albums, the player will play no more than a combined total of 200 albums and tracks.

Sections of a picture or a music fe ature that are smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters. Dependi ng on the disc, no chapters may be reco rded.
Dolby Digital (page 25, 67)
Digital audio compression technology developed by Dolby Laboratori es. This technology conforms t o 5.1-channel surround sound. The rear channel is stereo and there is a discrete subwoofer channel in this format. Dolby Digital provides the same 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital au dio found in Dolby Digital cinema audio systems. Good channel separation is realized because all of the channel data are reco rded discretely and little deterioration is realized because all channel data processing is dig ital.
Dolby Surround (Pro Logic) (page 24, 67)
Audio signal processing tec hnology that Dolby Laboratories developed for surround sound. When the input signal co ntains a surround component, the Pro Lo gic process outputs the front, centre and rear signals. The rear channel is monaural.
DTS (page 25, 68)
Digital audio compression technology that Digital Theater Systems, In c. developed. This technology conforms t o 5.1-channel surround sound. The rear channel is stereo and there is a discrete subwoofer channel in this format. DTS provides the sam e 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital audio. Good channel separat ion is realized because all of the channel data is recorded discretely and little deterioration is realized because all channel data processing is dig ital.
DVD (page 7)
A disc that contains up to 8 hours of moving pictures even though it s diameter is the same as a CD. The data capacity of a single- layer and singlesided DVD is 4.7 GB (Giga Byte), which is 7 times that of a CD. The data capacity of a double-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5
72
GB, a single-layer and double-sided DVD is
9.4 GB, and double-layer and double-sided DVD is 17 GB. The picture data uses the MP EG 2 format, one of the worldwide standards of digital compression technology. The picture data is compressed to about 1/40 (average) of its original size. The DVD also uses a variable rate coding technology that c hanges the data to be allocated according to the status of the picture. Audio information is recorded in a multi-channel format, such as Dolby Digital, allowing you to enjoy a more real a udio presence. Furthermore, various adva nced functions such as the multi-angle, multilingual, and Parental Control functions are provided with the DVD.
Index (CD)/Video Index (VIDEO CD) (page
45)
A number that divides a t rack into sections to easily locate the point you want on a CD or VIDEO CD. Depending on the disc, no i ndex may be recorded.
MPEG audio (page 25, 68)
International standa rd coding system used to compress audio digital signa ls authorized by ISO/IEC. MPEG 1 conforms to up to 2channel stereo. MPEG 2, used on DVDs, conforms to up to 7.1-chan nel surround.
Scene (page 45)
On a VIDEO CD with PBC (playback control) functions, the menu screens, moving pictures and still pictures are divided into sections called “scenes.”
Title (page 45)
The longest section of a picture o r music feature on a DVD, movie, etc., in video software, or the entire album in audio software.
