Introduction and Safety Precautions
Introduction
Sonnet’s Fusion 500P 5-bay Serial ATA (SATA) drive enclosure combines the versatility of hot-swap functionality with support for the fastest 3.5" SATA drives in a compact package. This enclo sure supports 3 Gb/s drives and is backward compatible with
1.5 Gb/s drives, so you’ll get maximum flexibility in choosing drives for years to come. Its built-in port multiplier simplifies connection to the host adapter, using only one cable to support up to five drives.
Fusion 500P was designed with form and function in equal bal ance. The drive trays have built-in locking levers that double as handles to make swapping drives easy; its powerful built-in uni versal power supply and the cable-less connections from drives to enclosure simplify setup and assure reliability over the long haul. The enclosure’s user-swappable fan pulls air through its holes and those in the tray handles to cool the drives (even the bottom of each removable tray is open for air flow) to make Fusion 500P a cool running solution—the lower the drives’ temperature, the lower the failure rate.
Whether you start off with one drive for simple backups, or stuff Fusion 500P with the highest capacity, fastest SATA drives you can get your hands on to create a high def digital video editing suite, this is a product sure to leave you SATAsfied!

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Please read this section carefully before proceeding. These precautions explain the correct and safe use of this device, thereby helping to prevent injury to you or others, and also help you to minimize the risk of damaging the device.
Warnings
Always follow the basic warnings listed here to avoid the risk of serious injury or death from electrical shock, short-circuiting, fire, and other hazards. These warnings include, but are not limited to:
• With the exception of the user-swappable parts, do not attempt to disassemble or modify the enclosure. If this device appears to be malfunctioning, contact Sonnet Customer Service.
• Do not drop the enclosures or any of its drive trays; dropping or mishandling of the enclosure or drive trays may result in a malfunction.
• Do not insert your fingers or foreign objects inside the enclo sure; take particular care when small children are present.
• Do not expose the device to rain, use it near water or containers that contain liquids which might spill into any openings, or in damp or wet conditions.
-
WARNING: The Fusion 500P SATA drive enclosure fea-
tures a port multiplier that enables it to transfer data from (up to) 5 drives through a single eSATA data cable. It must be used with a port multiplier-aware host adapter card; otherwise, only the drive mounted in bay 1 will work.
• If unusual smells, sounds, or smoke come from the device, or if liquids enter it, switch it off immediately and unplug it from the electrical outlet.
• Follow the instructions in this manual carefully; contact Sonnet Customer Service for additional advice not covered in this User’s Guide.

Drive Installation and Enclosure Setup
1. Remove the Fusion 500P from its packaging, and place the enclo- sure near the computer to which it will be connected.
2. Push a lever release button toward the right until the lever pops out, and then pull the lever toward you to slide out and remove the drive tray (Figure 3)
.
WARNING: When handling computer products, take care to
prevent components from being damaged by static electricity; avoid working in carpeted areas. Handle hard drives only by their edges and avoid touching connector traces and component pins.
3. Remove a SATA drive from its packaging and set it in on a flat level surface with the label side down. Turn the drive tray upside down and lay it on top of the drive, with the back of the tray toward the drive’s connectors (Figure 4).

WARNING: When securing the trays to the hard drives, you
must verify the screw heads are flush with the tray. Otherwise, a screw may catch on the tray below and prevent you from removing the tray from the enclosure.
4. Using four of the supplied screws, secure the drive tray to the drive; tighten each screw to secure the tray snugly to the drive;
do not overtighten the screws
5. Carefully insert the drive tray into the enclosure until it stops, and then push the lever in to secure the drive and tray inside the enclosure (Figure 6)
.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 for additional drives.

Tips and Additional Information
Tips
This section covers some common sense tips for using the Fusion 500P enclosure.
Hot-swapping drives: Fusion 500P supports hot-swapping drives, enabling you to swap out a drive or an array of drives without having to shut down the enclosure or your computer. This does not mean you can simply pull out a drive at any time; you follow the procedure below or you may lose data in the process.
• Before removing a tray, you must put away (eject, unmount,
dismount) the drive volume. For Mac OS users, simply drag the drive icon associated with the drive(s) you wish to remove to the eject icon on the dock (or trash can on the desktop). Windows users may left-click on the eject icon in the taskbar for the drive they wish to eject.
Connections:
Fusion 500P uses an eSATA data cable connector to ensure the best connection. If you experience issues where a drive or volume does not appear, or you see an error message stating a drive is missing when you have the drives set up in an array, the cause may be as simple as a loose connection.
• If you do experience any trouble, disconnect the data cable
and reconnect it, making sure each it “clicks” in place.
