Section A
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this document is to provide instructions for proper assembly and maintenance of Solberg Scrubbers/Separators.
*WARNING*
This manual must be read and thoroughly understood before using and maintaining your scrubber/separator vessel. Failure to comply could result in explosion, product/system contamination or personal injury.
This manual should supplement the Operator’s knowledge of scrubber/separator vessel maintenance. It is the responsibility of the Operator to interpret and explain all instructions to persons who do not read or understand English BEFORE they are permitted to maintain and service these vessels. This manual should be readily available to all people responsible for Operations and Maintenance.
Thank you for selecting products from Solberg Manufacturing, Inc. We are confident that our superior filter designs will exceed your application requirements.

2. Filtration Rules of Thumb
General: To ensure peak performance and delivered output from a compressor, blower,
turbine or engine, there must be clean and minimally restricted air/gas flow into the equipment out of the equipment. Proper scrubber/separator filtration will eliminate particulate, condensate and hydrocarbon mist from air/gas streams under extreme conditions. Filter size is a critical component to minimizing restriction and maintaining ideal operating conditions. With a properly sized filter, equipment will run efficiently over its operating life.
A primary factor in filtration efficiency and size is air velocity through the filter media. Generally, when velocity through a media is minimized, the filtration efficiency is maximized. In this scenario, pressure differential/restriction across the filter is also minimized. The primary objective when sizing a filter is to optimize the velocity of air through the media (sometimes called face velocity).
Solberg’s filter designs are completed after analyzing and interpreting the Operators’ application specifications and requirements.
3. Filter Element Specifications
Media: CEG, PSG
Efficiency: 99.97% @ 0.3 micron Typical Element Operating Differential Pressure: 0 – 5 psig / 0 – 0.36 BAR Filter Change-Out Differential: 2.5 psid / 0.17 BAR over initial backpressure of the
saturated element
Typically used in oil mist coalescer/separator applications

Media: Polyester
Efficiency: 99% @ 1 micron Typical Element Operating Differential Pressure: 0 – 3 psig / 0 – 0.21 BAR Filter Change-Out Differential: 1 psig / 0.07 BAR over initial backpressure of the
saturated and dirty element
Typically used in scrubber applications to remove fine particulate and trace
condensate
Note: Filter change-out differential pressure is ultimately determined by the Operator. Please follow application specific guidelines.
4. Element Cleaning
Cleaning is NOT recommended for Solberg Manufacturing’s scrubber or separator elements. Once particulate entrainment and saturation occur, it is impossible to restore elements to their original condition. It is recommended that once maximum differential pressure is reached, new elements should be installed.
5. Vane/Demister Pack Specifications Material: 304 / 316 Stainless Steel
Efficiency: 99% @ 8 micron Typical Operating Differential Pressure: 0 – 1 psig / 0 – 0.07 BAR Used in scrubber applications to remove condensate and separator applications to
remove heavy concentrations of oil
Designed to be removable and cleanable upon request

PROCEDURES
*WARNING*
Before installing any Solberg scrubber/separator, it is essential that all packaging materials are removed properly, to avoid injury risk.

1. Installation
A. Most scrubber vessels are designed in a “S” pipe configuration. In all cases the
bottom most connection of the vessel is the inlet
B. Flow direction is typically from the inside of the element to the outside of the
element
C. Ensure that pipe/flange connections are adequately sealed so the potential for
leaks is minimized
D. Mounting orientation is typically vertical to allow for gravity draining
E. Vessel should be anchored to ground prior to operation
2. Removing Vessel Lid
*WARNING*
Vessel must be relieved of pressure before opening. Failure to comply with these instructions could result in explosion or personal injury.
A. Remove fasteners (bolts, nuts and washers)
B. Swing lid to side of vessel using davit arm (if applicable)
3. Removing Element for Service/Maintenance

A. Element(s) are secured on a sealing plate and over a centering bracket with
fastening hardware (washer, nut and hex bolt).
B. Remove hardware and lift the element(s) out of vessel
*WARNING*
Failure to comply with these instructions may result in system contamination.
4. Securing Element
A. Remove any dust or particulate present on element sealing surfaces prior to
installation. Place new element(s) squarely into the vessel over the centering bracket to ensure the element(s) seat properly on the sealing plate
B. Place top plate (if applicable) on element
C. Secure washer, nut and hex bolt to the threaded rod of the centering bracket.
Element must be tightly secured, but DO NOT over tighten the hardware. Consult with Solberg for a torque specification.
*WARNING*
Defective installation may cause bypass and system contamination. Use only genuine Solberg replacement parts.
5. Removing Vane/Demister Pack
A. Remove fasteners and retaining ring (when present)

B. The vane/demister pack will lift out of basket assembly
C. After cleaning, re-install by pressing pack into the basket assembly. Tighten
fasteners on retaining ring until secure
6. Securing Vessel Lid
A. Make sure all surfaces are free from dust and other particulate.
B. O-rings (when present) must rest evenly along the o-ring groove on the vessel
ring flange
C. Gaskets (when present) must rest flat and even along vessel ring flange
D. Install fasteners and tighten to torque specification supplied on drawing

MAINTENANCE RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Recording the initial differential pressure readings is recommended to effectively maintain a scrubber/separator. Always document initial differential during start-up when element is clean and after two weeks when element is dirty or saturated. Replacement filters are needed when system experiences the maximum differential pressure levels specified by the Operator. Refer to pages 4 and 5 for guidelines
2. Always check replacement o-rings/gaskets to insure they are seated uniformly along the flanges during installation. If o-rings/gaskets do not seat properly or are damaged, please contact Solberg Manufacturing, Inc. immediately
3. Always check inlets/outlet connections, sealing surfaces and hardware when replacing the element to insure cleanliness. Wipe clean if necessary
4. Always ensure vane/demister pack is aligned and installed correctly within mounting basket
5. Operate only when a proper seal exists
6. Never operate without absolute assurance that fasteners have been tightened to the specified torque rating
