SCANNER SETUP
Insert the Batteries
Unlock the Battery door by us­ing a thin coin to turn the lock under the CHS to a horizontal
position (turn 90 degrees).
Install the batteries in their correct po­sition as indicated by the +/- symbols.
Important: Only use NiMH Rechargeable batteries. Do NOT use Alkaline Batteries
Attach the Lanyard (optional)
Detach the string loop of the
tether from the lanyard. Then feed the string loop through the slot in the Twist-lock and then through the end of the loop. Pull tight so the string loop is secure to the Twist-lock, Reat­tach the string loop to the tether from the Lanyard.
If desired, attach the tether to a lan­yard or belt.
CHARGE THE BATTERY
Charge the CHS
The CHS must be fully charged be-
fore rst use. Please allow 5 hours
uninterrupted charging for the initial battery charge.
For the 7Pi, lift the rubber ap to access
the power connector.
Red LED = Charging
Green LED = Fully charged
Charging from a computer USB port is not reliable and not recommended.
Socket Mobile offers a Charging Cradle (op­tional Accessory/sold separately) which is a convenient holder that charges the scanner when not in use.

BASIC FUNCTIONALITY
•Powering On: Press and hold down the small power button until the LED turns blue and the CHS beeps twice (low-high).
•Powering Off/ Disconnecting: Press and hold down the small power button until the CHS beeps twice (high-low).

Scanning Barcodes:
After connecting the CHS to your device, open an application and put the cursor where you want to enter data.
Hold the CHS about 4 inches (10 cm) from the barcode and press and
hold the trigger button. Keep your hand steady and make sure the Red beam covers the entire width of the barcode.
By default, the CHS will beep and vibrate, and the LED will ash Green to conrm that data was decoded and sent to the device.

HID Keyboard Emulation mode (default)
In HID mode the CHS emulates a keyboard. This is a universal connec-
tion method and will work with any application that has a text eld.
The application receives the data input from the CHS. The CHS includes a keyboard pop-up feature so you can disable the CHS and accept data
input from the onscreen keyboard on the device. Pages 10-11 provides
the connection steps using HID mode.
SerialPortProle(SPP)
Highly recommended, allows two-way communications with Apple iOS
devices. Compatible application developed with SocketScan 10 SDK
required.
MAC OS devices are connected using HID mode.
iOS devices are connected using either iOS mode or HID mode, but not both together.

The CHS is connected to your iOS device using one of the following modes:
1. iOS mode
2. HID Keyboard Emulation mode (default)
3. Serial Port Prole (SPP)
iOS mode
iOS mode is used with a Scanner-enabled Application. Scanner controls are embedded in the Application to provide better performance, secu-
rity, features, and domain-specic capabilities.
If you purchased a Scanner-enabled Application on the Apple App Store (or through the Apple Volume Purchase Program for Business) that features integrated support for the CHS, we recommend you install that Application on your device and follow the Application instructions to connect with the CHS. If the connection steps are not documented in
the Application, please see pages 12-13 for the connection steps using
iOS mode.

To pair the CHS with the Apple device in HID mode: (required only the
rst time you connect).
1. Power on the CHS.
2. Turn Bluetooth on for the Apple device. Go to Settings > Bluetooth. A
Bluetooth Devices search will begin.
An iOS device is always Discoverable when the Bluetooth menu is active. A MAC OS device provides an option to turn Discover-
able On or Off. Conrm the MAC OS device is Discoverable.
3. Tap Socket CHS[xxxxxx] in the list of Devices found. After a few sec­onds the “Not Paired” status will change to “Connected” and the CHS Blue LED will blink every 3 seconds indicating it is Connected.
The characters in brackets are the last 6 characters of the Bluetooth Address. The full Bluetooth address is printed in the Product Label (remove the battery door).
You are now ready to scan barcodes, see instructions on page 7.

Keyboard Pop-up Enable
The CHS emulates the keyboard in HID mode. So scanned barcode data
will be input into the text eld. The following steps show how to access
the onscreen keyboard while connected to the CHS in HID mode.
1. Make sure the CHS is connected to your Apple device in HID mode.
2. Open your application and place the cursor where you want to enter
data.
3. Quickly double-press the power button of the CHS (like double­clicking a mouse) to open or close the onscreen keyboard. The CHS
will beep once as conrmation.
To connect to a new Apple device, you must rst unpair the CHS
and remove the CHS from the Bluetooth list in your device. See
page 15.
iOS MODE - SCANNER-ENABLED APP iOS MODE - SCANNER-ENABLED APP (CONTINUED)
If you are using a Scanner-enabled Application, follow their instructions to connect with the CHS. Many applications include these steps and barcodes in the set-up procedure.
If you are using an Application that connects to the CHS using HID
Keyboard Emulation mode, follow the instructions on pages 10-11. iOS
mode should not be used.
If you are using the CHS with an iOS device and a Scanner-enabled Application that does not provide instructions to connect with the CHS, please use the following steps.
1. Power on the CHS and scan this barcode. The CHS will beep 3 times.

2. Turn Bluetooth on for the Apple device. Go to Settings > Bluetooth. A
Bluetooth Devices search will begin.
3. Tap Socket CHS[xxxxxx] in the list of Devices found. After a few seconds the “Not Paired” status will change to “Connected” and the
CHS Blue LED will blink every 3 seconds conrming the connection.
The characters in brackets are the last 6 characters of the Bluetooth Address. The full Bluetooth address is printed in the Product label (remove the Battery door).
4. Open the Scanner-enabled Application. The CHS will beep once indicating that the application is in control and you are ready to scan. It should now be connected to the CHS.
You are now ready to scan barcodes with the Scanner-enabled Application, see instructions on page 7.

The instructions below are based on the Asus Nexus 7 running
Android OS 4.2. Instructions for other devices may slightly differ.
For Bluetooth HID instructions, please see the User’s Guide.
To install the software:
1. If you installed barcode scanning software for your device camera,
you can scan this barcode to launch the SocketScan 10 page in Google Play. Alternatively, open Google Play and search for SocketScan 10
Keyboard Wedge software using the keyword “Socket”.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install SocketScan 10 software using the keyword “Socket”.
If prompted, allow the app to access Bluetooth settings / USB storage / SD card contents.
3. If SocketScan 10 prompts you to turn on Bluetooth, touch Allow.
4. You will be prompted to set SocketScan 10 as the keyboard language. Touch Back .
5. Touch Home | Apps | Settings | Language & input.
6. Under Keyboard & Input Methods, select SocketScan 10. In the same
settings you can congure the keyboard language or congure the
volume up button to trigger a scan. Touch Back.
Note: You can also trigger the scanner using the volume up button.
7. In SocketScan 10, touch Menu | Input Method. Select SocketScan 10. Touch Back.
To pair and connect the CHS to Android device: (required only the rst
time you connect).
1. Power on the CHS and scan this barcode to put the CHS in SPP mode. The CHS will beep 3 times.

Do not scan onscreen.
2. In SocketScan 10, touch Menu | Socket EZ Pair. Touch Bluetooth.
3. Select Socket CHS [xxxxxx].

4. When notied of a pairing request, swipe the notication down. Touch Pairing request. Touch Pair.
5. After the CHS connects and is ready to scan barcodes, it will beep once. The icon at the top of the screen will also change (see below). Touch Back.
6. A CHS registration icon will also appear on top of the screen. If desired, swipe it down to open the software and register your CHS.
Now you are ready to scan barcodes, see instructions on page 7.
To connect to a new device, you must rst unpair the CHS. See page 15.

Windows 7/8: Make sure you have administrative privileges to
install software.
1. Download the latest SocketScan 10 software from: http://www.
socketmobile.com/support/downloads/data-collection/series7/
ss10/?page=series7.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software. In the last
screen, click Finish.
3. In SocketScan Settings, select an incoming Bluetooth serial COM port. Click OK.
Click Ports to create a new incoming COM port or identify an incoming COM port.
1. To pair the CHS with the PC: (required only the rst time you
connect)Power on the CHS and scan this barcode. It will beep 3 times.

2. Use your Bluetooth software to start a device search.

3. Select Socket CHS [xxxxxx]. If prompted for a passkey, enter 0000 (four zeroes).
The characters in brackets are the last 6 characters of the CHS Bluetooth Address, which is labeled in the CHS battery compartment.
If prompted, choose Socket Serial Port service. Select an available COM.
4. Make sure SocketScan 10 is running. Click on the SocketScan 10 desktop icon.
5. Click on the SocketScan 10 icon in the task tray. In the pop-up menu, click Socket EZ Pair. Click Bluetooth. Select your CHS and click
Pair.
6. The PC will connect to the CHS, indicated by a beep. The CHS will then disconnect from the computer, indicated by two beeps. Click OK.
7. After the CHS connects and is ready to scan barcodes, it will beep once. The task tray icon will also change (see below).
8. Close Socket EZ Pair. The Registration screen will appear. If desired,
register your CHS.
Now you are ready to scan barcodes, see instructions on page 7.
To pair the CHS with the PC: (required only the rst time you connect)
1. Power on the CHS and scan this barcode. The CHS will beep 3 times.

Do not scan onscreen.
2. Turn on Bluetooth on your PC or PDA and start a device search.
3. Select Socket CHS [xxxxxx]. If prompted for a passkey, enter 0000 (four zeroes). If prompted to select services, select Input Device.
4. After the CHS connects and is ready to scan barcodes, it will beep once.
Now you are ready to scan barcodes, see instructions on page 7.
To connect to a new device, you must rst unpair the CHS. See page 23.

SocketScan 10 software works with BlackBerry OS 5.0.0.714 or later for
Bold 9700. Other phones may be compatible.
To install the software: On your phone, open http://www. socketmobile.com/blackberry.
Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the software.
To pair the CHS with the phone: (required only the rst time you
connect)
1. Power on the CHS and scan this barcode. Use this barcode for Windows Mobile devices. The CHS will beep 3 times.

2. Use the phone’s Bluetooth software to start a device search.
3. Select Socket CHS [xxxxxx]. If asked for a passkey, enter 0000 (four zeroes).
4. In the Home screen, click Downloads | SocketScan 10. If prompted to grant trusted application status, click Yes.
5. Click Menu | Socket EZ Pair. Click 1D Scanner. If prompted, select
your CHS.
6. After they pair and connect, the CHS will beep once to conrm the connection, then beep twice to signal a disconnection. Click Menu |
Close to close Socket EZ Pair.
7. SocketScan 10 will try to connect to the CHS. If asked to conrm, click Yes.
8. After the CHS connects and is ready to scan barcodes, it will beep once.
9. Click Menu | Close. The registration screen will appear. If desired, register your CHS.
Now you are ready to scan barcodes, see instructions on page 7.
Unpairing the CHS: Deleting the Bluetooth Pairing
In most cases, if the CHS is paired with a device, you should unpair it before trying to connect to a new device.
1. Power on the CHS.
2. Press and hold down the trigger button.
3. Press and hold down the power button.
4. After you hear 3 beeps, release both buttons.
The CHS will unpair and automatically power off. The next time you power on the CHS, it will be discoverable.
Remove the CHS from the Bluetooth list in your iOS device
To Unpair the CHS on your device, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap

next to the Socket CHS [xxxxxx] name, then tap “Forget this Device”.

Automatic Reconnections
After you power on the CHS, it will automatically try to connect to the last device it was connected to.
Make sure the device is in range with Bluetooth On.
If using HID mode, press the trigger button will enforce the connec-
tion.
If using iOS mode, make sure the Scanner-enabled Application is active.
Make sure the device is on and in range. While the CHS is attempting to connect the Blue LED will blink every second.
If a connection is made, the Blue LED will blink every 3 seconds.
If a connection is not made after 30 tries, the CHS will emit a long
beep.
