RollPCI User Manual Introduction
Issue 3 Rev 1 Page 8 © 2015 SAM
1. Introduction
1.1 Description
The RollPCI is a network interface card enabling connec tio n be twe e n a PC workstation and the RollNet high-speed 75 ohm co-axial network. The network connection, made with RG-62/u cable via BNC T-conne ctors, supports data rates up to 2.5Mbps. BNC-style 75 ohm terminators must be fitted at either end of a bus.
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7 (64-bit, 32-bit), XP, Vista, 2000
1.2 Features
Standard plug and play compliant 32-bit PCI card
Enables control of SAM products from a PC with RollCall software and 75 ohm co-axial network
Automatic configuration of I/O and interrupt
High speed I/O access to RollNet controller
Enhanced software capabilities
Universal voltage for use in PCI-X slot, or conventional PCI slot
RollPCI User Manual Hardware Installation
Issue 3 Rev 1 Page 9 © 2015 SAM
2. Hardware Installation
2.1 Installing the RollPCI Card
1. Remove the cover from the computer.
2. Identify the PCI slot where the RollPCI card is to be fitted.
3. Remove the cover and retaining screw from behind the slot.
4. Position the RollPCI card over the slot and carefully insert the card until it is fully seated.
5. Secure the bracket of the RollPCI card by refitting the retaining screw.
6. Refit the computer cover.
7. Install the relevant software drivers. See Device Driver Installation on page 11.
2.2 Connecting RollPCI to the RollNet Network
Connect the RollPCI to the RollNET using a BNC ‘T’ connector and RG-62/u cable.
Ensure that 75 ohm BNC terminators are fitted at both ends-of-line.
2.3 RollNet
RollNet is SAM's variant of ArcNet. It is a token bus protocol. RollNet uses standard video coaxial cables and connectors, and uses voltage levels that are compatible with video signals. Therefore, no damage should occur if video and RollNet cables are accidentally mis-connected.
RollNet is wired using 75ohm; video coaxial cable. Each device has a ‘T’ connector fitted to its BNC connector. The ‘T’ connectors are joined using 75ohm; video coaxial cable. The two end ‘T’ connectors have a 75ohm; terminator fitted.
There are physical limitations on the number of units on a single coaxial cable run. Each cable run can only have a maximum of 64 "Unit loads". Different units have different unit loads:
Important:
Before starting the installation, ensure that the PC and any peripheral equipment is switched off, and the power connections are removed.
Important:
Never attach a network coaxial cable directly to the RollPCI. Always use a BNC ‘T’ connector.
RollPCI User Manual Hardware Installation
Issue 3 Rev 1 Page 10 © 2015 SAM
2.4 RollNet Over RS485
RollNet coaxial segments may be joined by ‘RS485’ links to over come the 64 unit load limit. The ‘RS485’ link is connected between two RollCall units that support ‘RS485’, and each of these two units is connected to a different RollNet coaxial segment. The RollCall units at each end of the ‘RS485’ link monitor the signals on the link and regenerate the signal on the RollNet cable; and vice-versa. A unit (or an oscilloscope) connected to the RollNet will not be able to distinguish signals from units on the RollNet segment from those transmitted via the ‘RS485’ link. The RollNet segments and the ‘RS485’ link appear to be a single cable run.
