A SIMPLE AND COST EFFECTIVE WAY TO MINIMIZE
ROOM ARTEFACTS AND IMPROVE SEPARATION

Good mic separation and isolation means a cleaner recording and a more controlled end result. And although the question of how much separation is really necessary in any given situation, audio engineers around the world unanimously agree that, if given the chance, they would rather be in control of these factors, than not.
The Mic Thing is essentially a 2” (50mm) thick acoustic tile housed inside an adjustable lightweight steel frame. It can be mounted on just about any mic, drum or speaker stand up to 1” (25mm) in diameter. The two winged panels are adjustable in order to create anything from a flat, planar absorber to a tight, sound isolating semi-circle. This flexibility of design allows great manipulation of both separation and sound absorption.
By tightening the wing panel attitude, greater isolation and a dryer sound can be achieved
Size fully expanded: 29 ” x 16 ¾” x 2” (740mm x 400mm x 50mm) Shipping weight: 14lbs. (6.5kg)
Varying the mic position will also affect results
Three views of wing panel attitudes:
Flat. Improved separation with less room reverberation. Wide. Increased isolation and dryness with minimal treble attenuation. Tight. Very dry sound with attenuated treble response
Two screw clamps means easy mounting to tube widths of up to 1” (25mm) diameter.
The two graphs to the right indicate the effectiveness of the isolation. By using broadband white noise under anechoic conditions, the top graph shows the amount of spill a large diaphragm studio condenser microphone using a cardioid pattern picks up from directly behind at 3ft (1m). The bottom graph is the very same signal being attenuated by The Mic Thing mounted 1ft (30cm) behind the mic.
The absorbing panel is treated with Ultra-Fresh anti-microbial. Controls bacteria, mold, mildew and fungi.
