Limited Warranty

Limited Warranty Statement: SMC Networks, Inc. (“SMC”) warrants its products

to be free from defects in workmanship and materials, under normal use and
service, for the applicable warranty term. All SMC products carry a standard 90-day
limited warranty from the date of purchase from SMC or its Authorized Reseller.
SMC may, at its own discretion, repair or replace any product not operating as
warranted with a similar or functionally equivalent product, during the applicable
warranty term. SMC will end eavo r to repair or replace any pr od uct retu r n ed und er
warranty within 30 days of receipt of the product.

The standard limited warranty can be upgraded to a Limited Lifetime* warranty by
registering new prod uc ts wi thin 30 days of purchas e fro m SMC or it s Auth or ized
Reseller. Registration can be accomplished via the enclosed product registration
card or online via the SMC web site. Failure to register will not affect the standard
limited warranty. The Limited Lifetime warr anty cove rs a product durin g the Life of
that Product, which is defined as the period of time during which the product is an
“Active” SMC product. A product is considered to be “Active” while it is listed on
the current SMC price list. As new technologies emerge, older technologies become
obsolete and SMC will, at its discretion, replace an older product in its product line
with one that incorpor ates these newer technologies. At that point, the obso lete
product is discontinued and is no longer an “Active” SMC product. A list of
discontinued products with their respective dates of discontinuance can be found at
http://www.smc.com/smc/pages_html/support.html.

All products that are replaced become the property of SMC. Repl acement products
may be either new or reconditioned. Any replaced or repaired product carries
either a 30-day li mited war ranty or the remain der o f th e init ial warran ty, wh ich ever
is longer. SMC is not responsible for any custom software or firmware,
configuration information, or memory data of Customer contained in, stored on, or
integrated with any products returned to SMC pursuant to any warranty. Products
returned to SMC should have any customer-installed accessory or add-on
components, such as expansion modules, removed prior to returning the product
for replacement. SMC is not responsible for these items if they are returned with the
product.

Customers must contact SMC for a Return Material Authorization number prior to
returning any product to SMC. Proof of purchase may be required. Any product
returned to SMC without a valid Return Material Authorization (RMA) number
clearly marked on the outside of the package will be returned to customer at
customer’s expense. For warranty claims within North America, please call our
toll-free customer support number at [phone]. Customers are responsible for
all shipping charges from their facility to SMC. SMC is responsible for return
shipping charges from SMC to customer.

The EZ Switch 10/100 SMC-EZ109DT i s a n 8-port Fast Ethernet
switch with one Gigabit uplink port. The 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX
ports deliver dedicated 10/100 Mbps links to each attached LAN
segment. The Gigabit port operates at 100 and 1000 Mbps. Each
port on the switch supports automatic MDI/MDI-X detection. This
means that y ou can u se ei th er st ra ight -throu gh or cr oss over cab les
to connect to any other network devic e.

Auto-nego t i a tion is used to se lect the optim a l transmission speed
and communication mode for each connection. With
store-and-forward switching and flow control, maximum data

After unpacking the EZ Switch 10/ 10 0 , check the contents of the
box to be sure yo u have receiv ed the followin g component s :

Selecting a Site

Be sure to follow the site selection guidelines below when
choosing a location:

 Select a suitable location for the switch:

• It shoul d be accessible for inst alling, cabling and
maintainin g the switch.

• The temper ature and humidity should be within the ranges
listed in the specifica t ions.

• The status LEDs should be clearly visible.

• There should be adequate space (approximately two
inches) on all sid es for proper air flow.

 Make sure twisted-pair cable is always routed away from

power lines, fluorescent lighting fixtures and other sources of
electrical interference such as radios and transmitters.

Make sure that a prope rly grounded power outlet is within 2.44
meters (8 feet) of the switch and is powered from an
independent circuit breaker. A s with any equipment, using a
filter or surg e suppressor is recom mended.

Instructions

Positioning the Switch

The EZ Switch 10/100 can be placed anywhere there is enough flat
space, such as on a desktop or a shelf.

1. Attach the four adh esive feet to the bottom of the sw i tch.

2. Place the first switch on a firm, flat surface where you want to

install the st ack

3. Repeat step 1 for each switch before stacking them. The rubber
foot pads cushion the switch against shocks and vibrations,
and provide space between each switch for ventilation.

Applying Power

Plug one en d of the power cable into the pow er receptacle a t th e
back of the switch, and the other end into an appropriate electrical
outlet. Check the Power LED to be sure power is on.

Note: It is not necess ary to power off the sw i tch before

connecting or disconnecting any UT P cab l es , as these
actions will not disrupt the operation of other devices
attached to the switch.

RJ-45 10/100 Mbps Connections

For twisted-pair devices, connect each PC to an RJ-45 port on the
switch with a twis te d-pair cable segmen t, maximum 100 meters
(328 feet). Use Categor y 3, 4, or 5 cable for 10 Mbps connections ,
and Category 5 cable for a ll 100 Mbps connections.

Note: If an attach ed device doe s not support

auto-negotiation, the data rate will be sensed
automaticall y and the communicati on mo de will
default to half duplex.

Connecting to the Gigabit Uplink Port

The Gigabit uplink port operates at 1000 and 100 Mbps and
supports IEEE 802.3x flow control. Auto-negotiation is used to
select the optimal transmission speed and comm unication m ode.
Use Category 5 or 5e cable of maximum length 100m (328 feet).
You should also test the cable installation for IEEE 802.3ab
compliance. See “1000BASE-T Cable Requirements” on page 14.

Sample Applications

This switch segments your network, significantly increasing both
bandwidth and throughput. Any port on the switch can be
attached t o a hub (a shared collision domain) or prov ide a
dedicated l ink to a sing le network d evice (such as a works tation or
server). When a port on the switch is connected to a hub (a 10 or
100 Mbps repeater), th e bandwidth provid ed by that port is shared
by all the devices connec ted to the attached hub. However, when
a port is connec te d to an end node or to a device that breaks up
the collision domain (e.g., another switch, bridge or router), the
attached device has access to the full b a ndwidth provided by that
port.

Bridging Functions - This switch p rovides fully tran sp a rent
bridging fun cti ons. I t auto ma tical ly l earns nod e ad dresses , th at are
subsequently used to filter and forwar d all tr affi c based on the
destination address. When traffic passes between devices attached
to the same shared collision domain, those packets are filtered
from the swit c h. But when tr affic must be pas sed between unique
segments (i.e., different ports on the switch), the high-speed
switching fabric forwards the packets at near zero latency.

Switching Functions - Store-and-forward switch ing is used to
forward traffic to other ports. This scheme ensures data integrity
and provides a clean data stream.

Flexible Configuration - This switch is not only designed to
segment your network, but also t o provide a wide rang e of options
in setting up network connections. It can be used as a simple
stand-alone switch; or be connected with standard repeater hubs,
switches, or other network interc onnection devi ce s in various
configurations.

Gigabit Uplink Port - You can use the Gig a bit port to support
applications suc h as hig h-sp eed file serv er s, or fo r conn ecti ng to a
collapsed ba ckbone swi t ch.

In the figure below, the EZ Switch 10/100 is operating as a
collapsed backbone for a small LAN. It is providing dedicated 20
Mbps full-duplex connections to workstations and 200 Mbps
full-duplex connections to power users and servers. The Gigabit
port is used to provide a 2 Gbps full-duplex link to a server.

Probable Causes

Power outlet or power cord m a y be defective.

Possible Solutions

• Check for loose connec tions.

• Check the power outlet by using it for another device.

• Replace the power cord.

Link LED does not light after connection is made.

Probable Causes

Switch port, ne twork card or cable may be defe ct ive.

Possible Solutions

• Check that the swi tch and attached device are both
powered on.

• Be sure the netw ork cable is connected to both devices.

• Verify that Category 5 cable is used for 100 Mbps

connection s and that the length of any cable does not
exceed 100 meters (328 feet).

• Check the net work card an d cable co nnect ions for defects .

• Replace the de f ective card or c a ble if necessar y.

10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Pin Assignments

An Ethernet or Fast Ethernet twisted-pair link segment requires
two pairs of wires. Each wire pair is identified by two different
colors. Each wire pair must be attached to the RJ-45 connector in a
specific orientation detailed below.

Because all ports on this switch support automatic MDI/MDI-X
operation, you can use straight-through cables for all network
connections to PCs or servers, or to other switches or hubs. In
straight-through cable, pins 1, 2, 3, and 6, at one end of the cable,
are connected straight through to pins 1, 2, 3 and 6 at the other

end of the cable.

1000BASE-T Pin Assignments

The table below shows the 1000BASE-T MDI and MDI-X port
pinouts. Thes e ports require that all four pairs of wires be
connected. Note that for 1000BASE-T operation, all four pairs of
wires are used for both tr ans mi t and receive.

Use 100-ohm Category 5 or 5e unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) or
shielded twisted-pair (STP) cable for 1000 BA SE-T connections .
Also be sure

that the length o f any twisted -pair connec tion does no t

exceed 100 meters (328 feet)

1000BASE-T Cable Requirements

All Category 5 UTP cabl es that are us ed for 100B A S E-T X
connection s sh ould also work for 1000BASE- T, providing that all
four wire pa irs are connected. Howe ver, it is recommended th a t
for all criti cal connec tions, or any new cable in stallati ons, Categ ory
5e (enhanced Category 5) cable should be used. The Category 5e
specification includes test parameters that are only
recommendations for Category 5.

Therefor e, the first step in prepar ing existing Ca tegory 5 cabli ng
for running 1000 BASE -T is a simple te st of th e cable ins tallat io n to
be sure that it complies with the IEEE 802.3ab standards.

Cable Testing for Existing Category 5 Cable

Installed C a tegory 5 cabling must pass tests for Attenuation,
Near-End Crosstalk (NEX T) , and Far-End Cro sstalk (FEXT ) . This
cable testing information is specified in the ANSI/TIA/EIA-TSB-67
standard. Additionally, cables must also pa ss te st parameters for
Return Loss and Equal-Level Far-End Crosstalk (ELFEXT). These
tests are speci f ied in the ANSI/TIA/EIA-T SB -95 Bulletin, “The
Additional Transmission Pe rformance Guide lines for 100 Ohm
4-Pair Category 5 Cabli ng .”

Note that when test ing your cable installat i o n, be sure to include
all patch cables between switches and end devices.

Adjusting Existing Category 5 Cabling to Run
1000BASE-T

If your existing Category 5 installation does not meet one of the
test parameters for 1000BASE-T, there are basically three measures
that can be applied to try and correct the problem:

1. Replace any Category 5 pat ch cabl es with hig h- pe rformance
Category 5e cables.

2. Reduce the number of connectors used in the link.

3. Reconnect some of the connectors in the link.
