LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY

Limited Warranty Statement: SMC Networks, Inc. ("SMC") warrants its products to be free from
defects in workmanship and materials, under normal use and service, for the applicable warranty
term. All SMC products carry a standard 90-day limited warranty from the date of purchase from
SMC or its Authorized Reseller. SMC may, at its own discretion, repair or replace any product
not operating as warranted with a similar or functionally equivalent product, during the
applicable warranty term. SMC will endeavor to repair or replace any product returned under
warranty within 30 days of receipt of the product.

The standard limited warranty can be upgraded to a Limited Lifetime* warranty by registering
new products within 30 days of purchase from SMC or its Authorized Reseller. Registration can
be accomplished via the enclosed product registration card or online via the SMC web site.
Failure to register will not affect the standard limited warranty. The Limited Lifetime warranty
covers a product during the Life of that Product, which is defined as the period of time during
which the product is an 'Active' SMC product. A product is considered to be ‘Active’ while it is
listed on the current SMC price list. As new technologies emerge, older technologies become
obsolete and SMC will, at its discretion, replace an older product in its product line with one that
incorporates these newer technologies. At that point, the obsolete product is discontinued and is
no longer an 'Active' SMC product. A list of discontinued products with their respective dates of

All products that are replaced become the property of SMC. Replacement products may be either
new or reconditioned. Any replaced or repaired product carries either a 30-day limited warranty

custom software or firmware, configuration information, or memory data of Customer contained
in, stored on, or integrated with any products returned to SMC pursuant to any warranty. Products
returned to SMC should have any customer-installed accessory or add-on components, such as

ABOUT THE EZ SWITCH 1000

SMC8504T

The EZ Switch 1000 (SMC8504T) is an 4-port Giga Ethernet Switch. Its 4
10/100/1000BASE-TX ports deliver dedicated 10/100/1000Mbps links to each attached LAN
segment – all with conventional cabling and adapters. Auto-Negotiation is used to select the
optional transmission speed and communication mode for each connection. With
store-and-forward switching and flow control, maximum data integrity is always maintained,
even under heavy loading. Easy installation and reliability make this plug-and-play switch an

INSTALLING THE EZ SWITCH 1000

The EZ Switch 1000 can be placed on a desktop or shelf, or installed in a standard 19-in equipment
rack.

Equipment Checklist

After unpacking the EZ Switch 1000, check the contents of the box to be sure you’ve received the
following components:

Selecting a Site

Be sure to follow the site selection guidelines below when choosing a location:

u Select a suitable location for the switch:

l It should be accessible for installing, cabling and maintaining the switch
l The temperature and humidity should be within the ranges listed in the specifications.
l The status LEDs should be clearly visible.
l There should be adequate space (approximately two inches) on all sides for proper air flow.

u Before rack mounting the switch, pay particular attention to the following factors:

l Temperature: Since the temperature within a rack assembly may be

higher than the ambient room temperature, check that the rack­environment temperature is within the specified operating temperature
range.

l Mechanical Loading: Do not place any equipment on top of a rack-mounted switch.
l Circuit Overloading: Be sure that the supply circuit to the rack assembly is not overloaded.
l Grounding: Rack-mounted equipment should be properly grounded. Particular attention

should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to the mains.

u Make sure twisted-pair cable is always routed away from power lines, fluorescent lighting

fixtures and other sources of electrical interference such as radio, transmitters, etc.

u Make sure that a properly grounded power outlet is within 8 feet (2.44 meters) of the switch

and is powered from an independent circuit breaker. As with any equipment, using a filter or
surge suppressor is recommended.

Instructions

1. Positioning the Switch: For desktop or shelf mounting, attach the four adhesive foot pads to
the bottom of the switch. For rack-mounting, attach the mounting brackets to both sides of the
switch with the screws provided, then install the switch in the rack.

2. Applying Power: Plug one end of the power cable into the power receptacle at the back of the
switch, and the other end into an appropriate electrical outlet. Check the Power LED to be sure
it is on.
Note: It is not necessary to power off the switch before connecting or disconnecting any UTP
cables, as these actions will not disrupt the operation of other devices attached to the switch.

3. Connecting PCs: Connect each PC to an RJ-45 port on the switch with a straight-through
twisted-pair cable segment, maximum length 100 meters (328 feet). The EZ Switch 1000 will
support up to 4 PCs.
Note: If an attached device does not support Auto-Negotiation, the data rate will be sensed
automatically and the communication mode will default to half duplex.

4. Cascading Switches and Other Network Devices: If you need more ports, connect the port
with crossover cable on another device. See the “Cable Specifications” and “Connectivity
Guidelines” sections of this guide for further information.

RS-232 serial cable

Prepare a RS-232 serial cable. Attach the 9-pin female connector to the male connector on the
switch. Plug the other side of this cable to your PC.

2. Hyper Terminal

In Windows 95/98, launch “Hyper Terminal”, create a new connection, and adjust settings as:

Each port of the switch can be assigned to one or multiple VLANs (this device can be divided
into 4 VLANs maximum). Frames from the source port will only be forwarded to destination
ports within the same VLAN domain. A broadcast/ multicast frame will be forwarded to all
ports.

The switch can support priority either from tagged frame or based on the input ports. This entry
is for port-based priority, level 0 stand for the lowest priority, level 7 as highest priority. Flow
control will be disable if priority level 7 was selected.

through the use of unique and statistical methods, and provides link resiliency (link-fail-over

function) when one or more of the link in a trunk group fails.

The uplink port provides a way to connect the switch with a repeater hub, a working switch, a
router, or any type of interconnecting device compliance with IEEE802.3 standard for extension
applications.

Note: It is very important that each port is assigned to an uplink port, or data frame might be lost.
The uplink port should be configured to be within the same VLAN as the source port. If the
uplink port is not a member of the VLAN, the broadcast or multi frames will not be forwarded to
its designated uplink port. Multiple VLANs can share the same uplink port.

7. Monitor Port

This feature provides complete network monitoring capability at 100Mbit/s. A copy of egress
(TX) data and ingress (RX) data of the mentioned port is sent to their respective snooping ports.

RJ-45 Connector Pin Assignment

Caution: DO-NOT plug a phone jack connector into any RJ-45 port. Use only twisted-pair

cables with RJ-45 connectors that confirm with FCC standards.
An Ethernet or Fast Ethernet twisted-pair link segment requires two pairs (or 4 pairs for
1000Mbps) of wires. Each wire pair is identified by two (or four) different colors. For example,
one wire might be green and other, green with a white stripe.
Each wire pair must be attached to the RJ-45 connector in a specific orientation. Note how the
pins are numbered in the illustration below. Be sure to hold the connectors in the same orientation
when attaching the wires to the pins.

Front-Panel LEDs

The front panel of the switch provides a link status LED for each RJ-45 port. In addition, the front
panel also contains status LEDs for “at-a’glance” system monitoring. The following table details
the functions of the various indicators:

Front-Panel Ports

The front-panel ports are multi-speed RJ-45 ports with built-in wiring crossovers. PCs can be
connected to these ports with straight-through or crossover cable. Each port supports
Auto-Negotiation, so the optimum communication mode (half or full duplex) and data rate (10 Mbps,
100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps) are selected automatically.

TROUBLESHOOTING

1. Symptom

Power LED does not light after power on.

Probable Causes

Power outlet or power cord may be defective.
Possible Solutions

l Check for loose connections
l Check the power outlet by using it for another device.
l Replace the power cord.

2. Symptom

Link LED does not light after connection is made.

Probable Causes
Switch port, network card or cable may be defective.

Possible Solutions

l Check that the switch and attached device are both powered on.
l Be sure the network able is connected to both devices
l Verify that Category 5 cable is used for 100Mbp connections and that the length of any

cable does not exceed 100 meters (328 feet).

l Check the network card and cable connections for defects.
l Replace the defective card or cable if necessary.
