Overview

The SMART Board for Plasma Displays™ (SBPD) is an interactive overlay that adds touch control and annotation capabilities to various plasma displays. The interactive overlay adds only 5/8" (1.59 cm) depth to the plasma display (without the SMART Pen Tray every SBPD).

Your Plasma Display
Interactive Overlay Sliding over a Plasma Display
The standard SBPD configuration includes a SMART Pen Tray equipped with an eraser and writing styluses that work in the same way as conventional dry erase markers except with electronic ink. With the SMART Pen Tray, all you need to do is pick up a stylus and start writing. Instructions for installing an SBPD with a SMART Pen Tray are provided in the main body of this guide.

Using the SBPD Without a SMART Pen Tray

You can also order an SBPD that includes a Tool Strip and a single writing stylus instead of a SMART Pen Tray. With this configuration, you need to select a writing tool from the icon strip before you can use the stylus to write on the SBPD in electronic ink. For information about installing an SBPD with the Tool Strip and single writing stylus, refer to Appendix A on pages 26–29. Information about using the Tool Strip is provided in Appendix B on pages 30–32.

Interactive Overlay

The interactive overlay slides onto your plasma display easily and is readily attached with four mounting brackets. The overlay has a touch resolution of approximately 2000 x 2000 and is composed of two pieces of analogue-resistive material separated by an air gap.

1
Page 6
When you touch the resistive material, the Pen Tray controller, connected to both your computer and the interactive overlay, sends contact information to the SMART Board Service. The SMART Board Service is the driver component of SMART Board Software that runs in the background, translating your contact with the SBPD into a variety of configurable behaviors.
To respond correctly to your touch, the SMART Board Service needs to know the precise area of the interactive overlay affected. You provide the SMART Board Service with this information by performing an orientation procedure, a simple process of touching firmly and precisely on a grid of large red crosses that appears on the overlay. For a detailed description of how to perform this procedure, refer to page 19 of this guide.

SMART Pen Tray

In addition to the interactive overlay, the SBPD comes with a SMART Pen Tray. The Pen Tray includes four styluses and an eraser. To write on top of the computer image, just pick up one of the four colored styluses from the Pen Tray and write on the SBPD.

Optional Icon Strips

The SBPD comes with three optional icon strips: the Display Control Strip, Custom Strip and Tool Strip.
If you have a Windows computer with an available serial port, you can use the Display Control Strip to turn your plasma display on and off, select a different screen width and perform other tasks to control the plasma display.

Supplied Software

SMART Board Software includes all the programs and tools you’ll need to configure and use your SBPD. For more information about how to use the programs and tools included in SMART Board Software, refer to the SMART Board User’s Guide or the extensive online Help that accompanies each program.

About this Guide

This guide describes how to install the SBPD. It doesn’t include information about using the SBPD. For information about using the SBPD, refer to the SMART Board User’s Guide or the extensive online help that comes with each program.
This guide is for both Windows and Macintosh
users of the SBPD. Almost all of the procedures and descriptions in this guide apply to either system. However, information that applies solely to Windows users is accompanied by a Win icon in the margin, and information relating only to Macintosh users is distinguished by a similarly placed Mac icon. Procedures common to both Windows and Macintosh are described in terms of Windows conventions.

Preparing the SBPD

To prepare the SBPD for installation, you’ll need to complete the following four tasks:
1. Unpack and check the SBPD components (page 4).
2. Place the overlay on the surface of a large table (page 5).
3. Adjust the optional icon strips, if necessary (pages 5–6).
4. Attach the SMART Pen Tray to the overlay (pages 7–9).

Unpacking and Checking Components

Unpack the contents of the shipping containers and check each item removed against the list provided below. If any items are missing, contact SMART Technical Support at 1.866.518.6791.
Each SBPD includes the following components:
an interactive overlay that slides onto your plasma display and is attached with four corner mounting brackets
eight bracket knobs and four 1/4-20 x 1/2" hex security screws for attaching the corner mounting brackets to the overlay, plus a 3/16" hex-head Allen key for tightening the hex screws
a Display Control Strip, Custom Strip and Tool Strip inside pockets attached to the interactive overlay
a SMART Pen Tray assembly with a bracket attached
a set of four styluses, an eraser cup and an eraser to equip the Pen Tray
a DB9-to-DB9 serial cable and SMART Keyboard adapter cable or a USB-to-Serial adapter
cable for connecting the Pen Tray to a computer
a modular 4-wire (MOD4) cable for connecting the overlay to the Pen Tray
an RS-232 serial cable for connecting the plasma display to a computer

Placing the Overlay on a Flat Surface

After unpacking the overlay, place it face down and flat on a table of sufficient size to accommodate it. Placing it on a table makes it easy to attach the SMART Pen Tray, make cable connections to the Pen Tray, and adjust the icon strips (if necessary).

Adjusting the Optional Icon Strips

The SBPD includes three optional icon strips: the Display Control Strip, Custom Strip and Tool Strip. If you have a Windows computer with an available serial port, you can use the Display Control Strip to turn your plasma display on and off, select a different screen width and perform other tasks associated with controlling the plasma display.
The Custom Strip and Tool Strip are available for both Windows and Macintosh computers. The Custom Strip enables you to select functions for each icon and draw whatever icons you want on the strip. The Tool Strip provides an alternative to the SMART Pen Tray, making a wide range of touch, display and annotation functionality accessible from the SBPD frame area. Please note that the position of the Custom strip may vary as shown below.

When you receive the SBPD, the Display Control Strip will be facing frontward, but the Custom Strip and Tool Strip will be facing backward. In order to use the Custom Strip or Tool Strip, you’ll need to flip the strip so it faces frontward. If you want to change the way an icon strip faces, you’ll need to do it before you attach the overlay to the plasma display because afterwards the icon strips are not accessible.
To flip an icon strip:
1. Pull the icon strip out of its plastic pocket.
2. Turn the icon strip over. If you don’t want to use the strip, position it to face backward. If
you do want to use the strip, position if to face frontward.

Activating an SBPD Connected to a Windows Computer

The procedure for activating an SBPD connected to a Windows computer varies depending on whether you connect to a serial or USB port.
To activate an SBPD connected to a Windows computer serial port:
1. Insert the SMART Board Software CD into your CD-ROM drive.
The SMART Board Software setup program should start automatically. If it doesn't, select
Start, Run
screen instructions to install the SMART Board Software.
At the end of SMART Board Software installation, you'll be asked if you want to put the SMART Board Tools icon in your Startup Folder. We recommend you reply affirmatively. Consequently, whenever you activate Windows, SMART Board Tools will always be open, and your SBPD will be fully functional without any further action.
2. Without removing the SMART Board Software CD, shut off your computer.
3. Insert the long end of the DB9-to-DB9 serial cable into an available serial port on your computer. The other end of the cable should have already been connected to the Pen Tray, as explained on page 9. Unplug your keyboard connector and reconnect it to the supplied SMART Keyboard adapter cable. Insert the male end of the keyboard adapter into the keyboard port on your computer. Finally, insert the keyboard adapter’s power plug into the power plug socket on the back of the long DB9 connector.

To manually configure your Windows computer serial port:
If you're running Windows ME or NT 4.0, you have an early version of Windows, or the Ready Light simply remains red rather than turning green, you'll need to manually configure the serial (COM) port to which your SBPD is connected.
1. Click the SMART Board Tools icon in the System Tray and then click the Control Panel button.
