3.3 Operating states
The SMARTBOW Eartag may be operated only under the operating conditions and the positions
specified by the manufacturer. Applicable local or national safety regulations and rules for the
prevention of accidents must be observed in all work performed.
The Eartag is exclusively produced for mounting on farm animals. In particular, the
manufacturer allows the use of SMARTBOW® Eartag for all categories of cows, e.g. milking
cows, beef cattle, calves and breeding pigs. Any other use is only permitted with a written
permission of MKW electronics GmbH.
Do not place the Eartag on heat-generating devices such as radiators or fan heaters and do not
expose it to direct sunlight. The ambient temperature must not exceed the maximum
temperature specified in the product documentation or in the data sheet. Product overheating
can damage the Eartag.
3.4 Electrical safety
Unless expressly permitted, never remove the cover or any part of the housing while the
SMARTBOW Eartag is in operation. Doing so will expose circuits and components and can lead
to injuries, fire or damage to the Eartag.
Any object that is not designed to be placed in the openings of the housing must not be used for
this purpose. Doing so can cause damage to the Eartags.
Unless specified otherwise, the Eartag is protected against the ingress of liquids. When the
battery compartment is opened it must be protected against penetration by liquids. If the
necessary precautions are not taken the Eartag may be damaged.
Do not use the Eartag under adverse environmental conditions such as
dust
inflammable gases, vapours and solvents
strong vibrations
An operation under the conditions described above may damage the Eartags.
Prior to cleaning the Eartags, disconnect it completely from the power supply (e.g. battery). Use
a soft, non-lining cloth to clean the product. Never use chemical cleaning agents such as
alcohol, acetone or diluents for cellulose lacquers.
3.5 Operation
In some countries there are laws about digital positioning and tracking of people, animals and/or
objects. Only the user is responsible not to violate such laws or regulations.
Before you start processing the SMARTBOW Eartag mechanically and/or thermally or before
you disassemble it, be sure to read and pay special attention to the chapter 9 “Waste disposal”.
Depending on the function, the Eartag can produce an elevated level of electromagnetic
radiation, which is within the range of the legal standards. Considering that unborn babies
require increased protection, pregnant women must be protected by appropriate measures.
Persons with pacemakers may also be exposed to risks from electromagnetic radiation. The
employer/operator must evaluate workplaces where there is a special risk of exposure to
radiation and if necessary, take measures to avoid the potential danger.
Should a fire occur, the Eartag may release hazardous substances (gases, fluids, etc.) that can
cause health problems. Therefore, suitable measures must be taken, e.g. protective masks and
protective clothing must be worn.
3.6 Repair and Service
Adjustments, replacement of parts and repair may be performed only by electrical experts
authorized by MKWE. Only original parts may be used for replacing parts. A safety test must
always be performed after parts have been replaced (visual inspection, functional test). This
helps to ensure the continued safety of SMARTBOW Eartags.
3.7 Transport
The packaging of the Eartags protects the housing and in particular the thorn for drawing the
ear tag, from damage.
If you have to return Eartags to MKWE, they should be packed so that external influences
cannot cause damage to the board.
3.8 Batteries
In the SMARTBOW Eartag a Panasonic CR 2477 button cell battery is implemented, with
respect to which, the following safety guidelines have to be applied.
Cells must not be disassembled, opened or crushed.
Cells or batteries must not be exposed to heat or fire. Storage in direct sunlight must be
avoided. Keep cells and batteries clean and dry. Clean soiled connectors using a dry, clean
cloth.
Cells or batteries must not be short-circuited. Cells or batteries must not be stored in a box or in
a drawer where they can short-circuit each other, or where they can be short-circuited by other
conductive materials. Cells and batteries must not be removed from the original packaging until
they are ready to be used.
Cells and batteries must not be exposed to any mechanical shocks that are stronger than
permitted.
If a cell develops a leak, the fluid must not be allowed to come into contact with the skin or eyes.
If contact occurs, wash the affected area with plenty of water and seek medical aid.
Button batteries must be kept away from children. If a battery is swallowed consult a doctor
immediately.
Improperly replacing or charging cells or batteries that contain alkaline electrolytes (e.g. lithium
cells) can cause explosions. Replace cells or batteries only with the matching MKWE type (see
parts list) in order to ensure the safety of SMARTBOW Eartags.
Cells and batteries must be recycled and kept separate from residual waste. Observe the
national regulations regarding waste disposal and recycling.
3.9 Magnetic fields
Please be aware that magnetic fields delete data media (diskettes, hard disks, USB flash drives,
digital cameras, check cards, credit cards, audio and video cassettes) and can affect or destroy
electronic and mechanical components, e.g. pacemaker monitors, compasses, counters, etc. In
any case keep a safety distance of about 1 meter.
Do not use the magnets in locations where they are exposed to high heat (> 80°C).
Magnetic fields of permanent magnets have, according to present knowledge, no measurable
positive or negative influence on people. A health risk due to the magnetic field of a permanent
magnet is unlikely but cannot be completely excluded. A health risk due to the magnetic field of
a permanent magnet is unlikely but cannot be completely excluded.
3.10 Waste disposal/Environmental protection
The SMARTBOW Eartag has a battery that must not be disposed of with unsorted municipal
waste, but must be collected separately. It may only be disposed of at a suitable collection point
or via MKWE.
Waste electrical and electronic equipment must not be disposed of with unsorted municipal
waste, but must be collected separately.
If products or their components are mechanically and/or thermally processed in a manner that
goes beyond their intended use, hazardous substances (heavy-metal dust such as lead,
beryllium, nickel) may be released. For this reason, the product may only be disassembled by
specially trained personnel. Improper disassembly may be hazardous to your health. The
national waste disposal regulations must be observed.

7 Transport and storage
7.1 Transport
Always use the original packaging for transporting the SMARTBOW Eartag to avoid scratching
the surface and unintended activation of the Eartag.
7.2 Storage
Store the Eartag in dry, cool, clean surroundings and avoid direct sunlight. Please note the
storage temperature range as in chapter 4.3 Technical Data.
Store the Eartag not right next to strong magnetic fields such as the SMARTBOW Eartag key
with magnet or other magnetic fields. Avoid long-term storage in or close to the SMARTBOW
Eartag applicator. The Eartag gets activated by magnetic fields, which leads to a significant
reduction in battery life.
Do not store already used Eartags open (without thorn). The penetration of dust and moisture
may have a functional impairment or failure of the Eartag result.
