design possible, the engine and transmission are housed
at the rear of the sma rt fortwo. With everyt hing from

transm ission, it offers plenty of driving fun.

For ext ra comfort, you can also opt for the twinamic
automat ic 6-speed dual-clutch transm ission t hat
shifts gears effort lessly. Even if you change gears
automat ica lly or use the opt ional shif t padd les as
part of the Sport package, gear shifts take just a

The twinamic 6-speed dual-clutch transmission consists of
two clutches—one to operate the uneven gea rs, and another
to operate the even and reverse gears. Though both are act ive
while the car is in motion, only one gear is engaged at any one
time. When a gear is engaged, the next higher or next lower
gear is in “standby” mode. Gea r shifting is then perfor med
by switching to the other clutch, which controls the next gear.
This happens at lightning speed and without any loss of

tractive power. It’s a more effi cient way to shif t gea rs,

whether you’re in manual or automat ic mode.
