Operating safety

Your attention must always be focused on the traffic conditions. Only operate the radio if traffic conditions permit you to do so. Operating the radio will distract you from the traffic and as a result you may lose control of your vehicle, thereby causing an accident.
Bear in mind that, at a speed of only 50 km/h, your vehicle is covering a distance of nearly 14 m per second.

Always set the volume so that you remain able to hear the sounds of your environment (e.g. car horns, ambulances, police sirens etc.). You could otherwise cause an acci­dent.

If work on electronic equipment or systems (e.g. the radio) and its software is carried out incorrectly, this equipment could stop functioning. The electronic systems are linked together by interfaces. Work on
electronic systems may also cause systems that have not been modified to malfunction. These malfunctions could affect the oper­ating safety of your vehicle and therefore also have a considerable effect on your safety.
Therefore, only have work on and changes to electronic components carried out at a qualified specialist workshop which has the necessary specialist knowledge and tools to carry out the work required.
Daimler recommends that you visit a smart Centre for this purpose.
This radio receiver is suitable for opera­tion by all persons in accordance with valid EU directives.
The device conforms to currently applica­ble European or harmonised national standards.
Therefore, adherence to the relevant spec­ifications for electromagnetic compati­bility is guaranteed for this device.
As a result, interference caused by your equipment to other electrical/electronic equipment, as well as interference to your equipment caused by other electrical/ electronic equipment is largely preven­ted.
The equipment is approved by the vehicle manufacturer in accordance with European Automotive EMC Directive 95/54/EC. There­fore, operation according to its intended purpose is approved for your vehicle. The equipment does not require certification

Display

The display shows all the information con­cerning settings, stations, current track time etc.
Depending on the audio source, this infor­mation may differ. Details can be found in the individual sections.

This section provides information about the basic functions of audio system basic. Further information about the functions can be found in the respective sections (Y page 14) and (Y page 16).

Before driving off, you should be familiar with the operation of the functions which you consider the most important. Never try out new functions while the vehicle is in motion. This will distract you from the traffic conditions and may result in an accident.
Operate the radio only in such a manner as

to allow you to retain full control of your vehicle in all traffic conditions.
Bear in mind that, at a speed of 50 km/h, your vehicle is already covering a distance of 14 m per second.

Switching on audio system basic

If the radio was on when the key was turned back in the ignition lock:
X
Turn the key to position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock.
or
X
Press the q button. The radio calls up the last active func­tion.

When the radio is switched on without the ignition, the radio switches off again automatically after 30 minutes.
RDS provides additional information broadcast inaudibly over the FM waveband. This information is broadcast by most radio stations. The available information may include such things as the name of the current programme or alternative frequen­cies over which the same station can also be received.
Audio system basic continuously updates the memory. The audio receiver is there­fore able to switch automatically to an alternative frequency with a better signal.

Fixing the frequency

To ensure that the reception of the set radio station is always of the best-possi­ble quality, an alternative frequency is selected automatically if necessary. You can deactivate this function by fixing the frequency.
To do this, proceed as follows:

Press the $ button.

Press the : arrow button repeatedly until Frequency fix is selected.
X
Press 9 to confirm. The O icon shows that the currently selected frequency has been fixed.
X
Press the back button to exit the menu. The fixed frequency is followed by the word FIX.

Turn the key to position 0 in the ignition lock.

Radio Data System (RDS)

Audio system basic is equipped with a Radio Data System (RDS).

Adjusting the volume

To raise the volume: turn the control knob clockwise.

To lower the volume: turn the control knob anti-clockwise.
Boosting volume for traffic announce­ments
Audio system basic plays traffic announce­ments at an increased volume. The playback volume is set at the factory and cannot be adjusted.

Mute

When in radio mode, the mute function mutes the radio.
If a traffic announcement is broadcast while the radio is muted, the announcement will still be audible.
To mute the traffic announcement, the x button must be pressed again.
Pressing and holding switches the TA (traf­fic announcement) function on or off.

Press the x button. The currently active operating mode is muted.

Press x again. The mute function is deactivated. The corresponding symbol in the display goes out.
tings on the external device. The sound settings are automatically stored every time you change them. The bass and treble settings allow you to adjust the intensity of the sound according to the type of music being played. The balance settings allow you to adjust the stereo sound to the left or right within the vehicle. In the default setting, the balance is set to the centre of the vehicle.

General information
You can make the systems settings in the system menu.
Brightness
Setting the display brightness:

Press the i button. The system menu appears.

The display brightness can be set dif­ferently for daytime and nighttime oper­ation. When the lights are switched off, the daytime operation settings are used and when the lights are switched on, the nighttime operation settings are used. In nighttime operation, the brightness can be reduced using the dimmer switch on the instrument cluster (see vehicle Owner's Manual).

Switching on the radio

Press the q button. The radio activates the last active func­tion.
If the last active function was radio mode, the radio menu will appear. You will hear the last station selected.

From another function: press the $ button. The radio switches to radio mode and you will hear the last station selected.

Selecting a station

General information
Stations may be selected in the following ways:

using the station search (Y page 14)

by entering the frequency manually (Y page 14)

using the station presets (Y page 15)
Selecting a station using the station search function

Set the desired waveband (Y page 14).

Press the ; button. The station search starts and searches forwards.
R
The search stops at the next station that can be received.

If the end of the waveband is reached, the search continues at the beginning of the waveband.

If no station is found, the search stops at the point where the search was star­ted.
Manual frequency entry
Manual frequency entry is available in all wavebands.

Set the desired waveband (Y page 14).

Press the $ button.

Storing stations using the Autostore function

The Autostore function automatically assigns receivable stations to the pre­sets in the preset groups FM1, FM 2, ... in an order corresponding to the quality of reception. Any stations stored manually in these presets will be lost.

Select the desired preset group.

Press the : button to select Presets and press 9 to confirm. The display shows the assignment of the six presets as well as the Autostore menu item.

Storing stations

General information
Each preset group (FM1, FM2, MW, SW and LW) provides six presets.
The following options allow you to store a station:

manually, using the station presets (all preset groups)
R
automatically, using the Autostore func­tion

Press the 9 or : button to select
Autostore and press 9 to confirm.
The six stations with the best reception are saved to the six available memory positions.

If the process is interrupted by a traf­fic announcement, you must repeat it.

USB mode

Connecting a device
You can use the USB port to connect an external audio source to your audio system basic. More information is available from any qualified specialist workshop, e.g. a smart Centre or a smart service centre.

A USB socket is fitted on the left-hand side of the stowage compartment on the front­passenger's side and can be used to connect an external audio device (e.g. MP3 player) or a USB storage medium.

Media is only recognised in the FAT32 file system and not in the NTFS file sys­tem.

Selecting an active partition
The Select Active Partition menu item makes it possible to display the partitions of the device that is connected to the USB port and to select the active partition.

Music menu
In the Music menu, you can select folders, playlists and tracks.

The name of the data carrier or the cur­rent folder is shown. If there are play­lists on the data carrier, a track can be selected using either the Folder or
Playlists options. If there are no play-
lists on the data carrier, track selection takes place automatically using the folder structure.

Press the : button to select Folder and press 9 to confirm. The available folders are displayed if they contain playable files.

Press the : button to select the desired folder and press 9 to confirm.

Press the : button to select the desired track and press 9 to confirm. The menu is exited and the track is played.

archy level.

The available playlists are displayed.

AUX mode

General information
You can connect an external audio source (AUX) to audio system basic. More infor­mation is available from any qualified specialist workshop, e.g. a smart Centre or a smart service centre.
You will find a permanently installed
3.5-mm stereo-audio jack on the left of the stowage compartment on the front­passenger side to which you can connect external audio equipment (e.g. an MP3 player).

Media and press 9 to confirm.

Press the : button to select Aux and press 9 to confirm. The Aux menu appears and the selected medium is played.

Press the 9 button to activate or deac­tivate the option.
O indicates the activated option. ª indicates the deactivated option.

and indicates the activated option. TP appears at the top left of the display if the station transmits traffic announce­ments. The radio automatically searches in the background for a station with the TA function.
Setting the volume level
The volume of AUX sources may be quieter than the radio playback volume. There are therefore two volume level settings:
Standard and Boost.

Press the : button to select Volume and press 9 to confirm. The options Standard and Boost are available.
