Introduction

The SMARTAudio 400 classroom amplification system provides high-quality audio amplification
for classrooms. SMARTAudio is the control center for the wireless microphone and speakers. The
system comes with a teacher microphone and optional student microphone. The receiver receives
audio signals and translates them into crystal-clear sound through the speakers. A variety speaker
options are available, including wall mounted speakers (SBA-150) and ceiling mounted speakers
(SBA-150c).

Using the teacher microphone

Control the input device’s volume directly from the teacher microphone. The teacher microphone
is ideal for large spaces. For more information see Acoustics in the SMART installation standards
(smarttech.com/kb/171035).

Use the information below to troubleshoot your issues for the SMARTAudio 400 classroom
amplification system.

Resolving issues with the microphones

Issue Solutions
The microphone is turned on and paired to the receiver, but MIC1 or MIC2 LEDis not lit.
Check the pairing again. See Pairing the microphones on the previous page.
13 smarttech.com/kb/171144
Page 14
SMARTAUDIO 400
Issue Solutions
The BATTLED is flashing green or orange.
Microphone is muted.
l
Unmute the microphone.
The microphone is pairing to a receiver.
l
Wait for the microphone to finish pairing with the receiver.
The BATTLED is flashing yellow. Microphone is out of range of the receiver. Move
back into range.
The BATTLED is flashing red. There was a pairing error with the receiver. Try
pairing the microphone again. See Pairing the microphones on page12.

Resolving issues with audio

Issue Solutions
All components are turned on and the microphones are paired, but there is no audio.
Check for audio from audio port first, and then from
l
mic port.
If the audio is working from both ports and but not from the internal mic element, the microphone may be defective. Contact SMART for a replacement.
Check the connection from the receiver to the
l
speakers. If the speakers are firmly and properly connected and there is still no audio, contact SMART regarding the receiver.
The audio is distorted

If a device is connected to the teacher or student
l
microphone using the AUDIOINport, set the device’s volume to 80–90% of its maximum volume. Then use the volume controls on the teacher microphone to adjust the volume.
Turn on dip switch 8 on the receiver.
l
Test the microphone from the malfunctioning system
l
with a properly functioning system. If the audio is still distorted, contact SMARTregarding the microphone.
Test a microphone from a properly functioning
l
system with the malfunctioning system. If the audio is still distorted, contact SMART regarding the receiver.
Page 15
SMARTAUDIO 400
Issue Solutions
There is audio feedback.
NOTE
Feedback occurs when the microphone picks up audio from the speakers and transmits it to the speaker again in a loop. Feedback sounds like an intermittent highpitched squealing or burst of sound, and it can occur when you stand in a particular spot (especially if the microphone is very close to the speakers) or randomly in a room.
Feedback is distinct from a buzzing or humming, which is a constant low noise that doesn’t necessarily change when the microphone used or turned on or off.
There is an audible hum.
Volume is set incorrectly. Set the volume while
l
standing beneath the speaker with the microphone.
TIP
Have someone else in the room help determine if the volume is not loud enough.
Do not stand directly beneath the speakers. This can
l
cause feedback.
TIP
Have someone else in the room help determine if the volume is not loud enough.
Turn on dip switch 5 on the receiver. This will mute
l
your microphone if a feedback loop starts.
Verify that the cables are connected properly.
l
The speaker cables may be running parallel with
l
power lines.
Replace any input cables that might be too long or
l
are unshielded.
The speakers are making a crackling sound.
Audio is interrupted
15 smarttech.com/kb/171144
The speakers and the receiver aren’t connected properly.
o
If the crackling sound is coming from all the speakers, check the connection at the back of the receiver.
o
If the crackling sound is coming from only one speaker, check the connection at the back of the speaker.
Flip dip switch 8 on the receiver to boost the signal.
l
Remove metallic obstructions between the receiver
l
and the microphones.

Resolving issues with power

Issue Solutions
The receiver isn’t receiving power. l Test the outlet with a device known to be working
correctly.
Try a different outlet.
l
If neither solution resolves the issue, contact SMART.
l

Resolving issues with battery charging

Issue Solutions
The microphone isn’t charging.
Make sure the charging cable is inserted correctly in
l
the AC adapter and in the microphone.
l Make sure the cable is oriented correctly in the
microphone. The arrow should face out towards the
microphone.
