Extended Service Interval
Oil change?
Not until next year!
Model Year 2001 sees the introduction of the
Extended Service Interval at ŠKODA for the Octavia model range.
Depending on the model and engine version, service intervals of up to 2 years or a maximum of 30000 km in the case of petrol engines and 50000 km in the case of certain diesel engines, are now possible.
This makes it possible to comply with customer wishes for reduction in the amount of service work, and also reflects the competitive situation.

It is the technical evolutions of the engines, new wear-resistant engine oils, lowmaintenance lead-calcium battery, as well as a further development of the service interval display which create the technical requirements for this advance.
Each service on a vehicle featuring the extended service interval always includes an oil change.
Note: The extended service interval will be introduced initially on the Octavia.

Einführung
Extended Service Interval ... brief and to the point
What is the extended service interval?
What is the special feature of the extended service interval?
How is the driver aware when a service is due?
What are the displays of the extended service interval?
The extended service interval is based on a wide range of technical developments. These make it possible to achieve a significant extension of the service intervals. The driver is informed in good time of the distance remaining until the next service is due by means of a modified service interval display.
Service intervals no longer need to be stated as fixed intervals.
Service intervals are determined from the conditions of operation of the vehicle as well as from the style of driving.
The display in the dash panel insert informs the driver of the distance remaining until the next service is due.
Warning if oil level is low.
Warning if brake pads at wear limit.
What are the positive effects of the extended service interval?
Are there any special points to note in respect of the grade of oil and oil changes?
Distance remaining until next service is due.
The extended service intervals greatly reduce the quantity of oil consumed over the entire life of the vehicle as a result of a smaller number of oil changes.
A smaller quantity of old oil is produced which minimises disposal and environmental problems.
Operating costs are reduced.
Yes! The extended service interval is only possible if engine oils conforming with certain VW standards are used. If oils conforming with other VW standards are used, the dash panel insert must be programmed accordingly. In this case, only fixed service intervals of 15000 km or once year are possible for the oil change.

Extended Service Interval
Flexible service interval
The combination processor in the dash panel insert J218 performs the task of calculating the service interval display. It computes the distance remaining until the next Inspection Service on the basis of the appropriate information.
The extended service intervals are only possible if the dash panel insert is coded accordingly, and if the specified engine oil is used.
The next service interval is calculated flexibly only if the service interval display has been reset using V.A.G 1552, V.A.G 1551 or VAS 5051, after a service event.
Fixed service intervals 1 year/ 15000 km for oil change
It is also possible to set a fixed interval of 15000 km/1 year for the oil change. This is necessary if the engine oil used does not conform with the LongLife specification.
It is also possible to reset the service interval display at the dash panel insert.
In this case, a fixed interval of 1 year/15000 km is set automatically, however.
The procedure is also described in the Owner's Manual.

The service interval display
The driver is informed of the distance which remains until the next service by means of the display in the dash panel insert.
In the standard version of the dash panel insert, the message appears calculated by the counter of the speedometer.
On models fitted with onboard computer or navigation system, the information relating to the next service due appears in the central display.
The distance stated until the next service is reduced in steps of 100 kilometres and is redisplayed each time the engine is started.
Note: The service interval display must be reset (adapted) each time a Delivery Inspection or a service is performed. Please always proceed as specified in the Workshop Manual.

The service interval (distance attainable until the next service) is calculated by evaluating the distance driven, in each stage in time units of 3 seconds, with the fuel consumed during the same time unit and the temperature profile detected during this period.
What this produces is a value which is a measure for the wear of the engine oil resulting from thermal stresses.

SP44_20
This in turn is used to calculate the distance remaining until the next service required.
Once the conditions for activating the service pre-warning or the service event are reached, an indication of the next service required appears in the display.

Extended Service Interval
Engine oil
Engine oil conforming to VW standard
The engine oil is an essential element of the engine design. Š KODA engines must be filled with oils which are approved in conformity with the VW standard. Oils of the specified standard must also be used for topping up.
New oil standard in combination with extended service interval with flexible display (LongLife oils)
Various oil companies, cooperating with the Volkswagen Group, have developed synthetic engine oils conforming to new standards to permit introduction of the extended service interval. It is only possible to achieve the long service intervals without a damage to the mechanical components of the engine, if these special oils are used.
SP44_07
SP44_11
Type of engine Oil standard
Petrol engines: VW 503 00
TDI diesel engines (except unit injection) VW 506 00
The new engine oils ensure even more stable engine protection over the long life of the oil. The specific high-lubricity properties also contribute to a reduction in fuel consumption.
Use of LongLife oil in other engines
Engines which do not have the technical requirements for the extended service interval must not be filled with LongLife oil. Refer to the specified oil standards.

Topping up engine oil
Oil conforming with the new specified oil standard, must also be used when topping up engine oil.
... only in exceptional cases
Topping up non-LongLife engine oil
It is possible that a customer has to top up the oil, for example if an oil level warning is indicated between service events because the oil is at its minimum level.
If, for example, oil conforming to the new standard is not available at a
filling station, not more than 0.5 liter of oil conforming to the standard VW 502 00 may be topped up in the case of petrol engines, and oil conforming to VW 505 00 in the case of diesel engines.
… Empfehlung an den Kunden
… for long trips
Recommend the customer to take in the car engine oil conforming to the new oil standard before setting off on a long journey. This ensures that the correct oil is always available for topping up.
This should only be done in exceptional cases in order to maintain mobility.
... it is not necessary in such a case to recode the service interval display.

Extended Service Interval
Oil level/oil temperature sender G266
The flexible service interval display obtains the information for calculating the oil level and oil temperature from the newly developed oil level/oil temperature sender G266.
In the case of diesel engines, the average deposit of soot particulates in the engine oil which has been determined from trials and stored in a map in the engine control unit, is also included in the calculation.

Measuring oil temperature and oil level
The oil temperature is detected by the integrated electronics of the separate temperature sensor.
The measuring element for the oil level likewise operates with a temperature measurement. It is heated up for a short time to a temperature above the current oil temperature. After the heating voltage is switched off, the measuring element is cooled down again by the engine oil to the temperature level of the oil. The oil level is calculated from the length of the cooling-down period.

Extended Service Interval
Low oil level warning signal
The familiar engine oil pressure warning light is also used for indicating the oil level.
If it lights up yellow
... the oil level is too low
If it flashes yellow for about 5 s after ignition "ON"
... there is a fault in the oil level/oil temperature sender G266
SP44_09
Note: If it flashes red ... the oil level is too low (risk of damage to the engine) – the engine must be switched off. In addition, an audible signal sounds (3 beep signals).
Important:
The oil level warning is cancelled by operating the bonnet contact. It is not possible to reset it with the selfdiagnosis.
The bonnet contact
The contact switch for the bonnet F120 is also included in the calculations of the service interval display.
The signal supplied by the bonnet contact is analysed as soon as the oil level warning has been activated.
If the bonnet is opened after an oil level warning has been activated, the electronic control assumes that oil has been topped up and cancels oil level warning.
If, however, the oil was not topped up, the electronic control recognises once again within about 100 km that the oil level is too low and once again activates the oil level warning.

Low-maintenance lead-calcium battery
With the introduction of the extended service interval, this means that the battery is also not inspected by the service workshop for a lengthy period. It is nevertheless important to ensure that the battery continues to operate properly during this extended time period.
What is new in this "New battery"?
– lead-calcium
– visual status display
The battery casing is not transparent. This does not create any disadvantages, however, when it comes to checking the battery because the topping-up cycles are three times longer than is the case for a conventional battery.
The battery has a round inspection window on the top. This so-called "magic eye" alters its colour depending on the charge state and electrolyte level of the battery.

Extended Service Interval
Brake wear indicator
The wear of the brake pad is determined electrically.
If the brake pad has reached its wear limit, the contact loop is cut through and the warning indicator in the dash panel insert lights up.
Depending on the vehicle model, the warning "Check brakes" appears in the display of the dash panel insert. It is additionally supported by an audible warning (1 beep signal).
SP44_04
Note: The brake wear indicator on the Octavia is fitted to the inner pad of the left front wheel (also if ESP fitted).
If the wear warning indicator is activated, it is of course necessary to inspect the wear of the pads at all the brakes.
Service interval and driving style
The extended service interval makes it possible to achieve extremely long intervals between a service. This does not necessarily mean, however, that the intervals which are possible are in fact achieved.
This depends to a not unimportant extent on the operation conditions of the vehicle.
SP44_05
The driver is requested to have a service carried out if one of the following 3 conditions is met:
– The maximum distance of 30000 km
(petrol engines)/50000 km (diesel engines) since the last service is reached
20
– 2 years have elapsed since the last
service
– The limit of the evaluated fuel
consumption is reached (refer to

If the vehicle is driven in an economic manner and, for the most part, over long distances, it is possible to achieve a maximum service interval of 30000 km or 2 years in the case of a petrol engine, or 50000 km and 2 years in the case of a diesel engine.
Extreme operating conditions, vehicle driven sharply (not economyoriented) and for the most part over short distances; all these factors can result in only the minimum service interval of 15000 km being achieved.

Coding
Coding to "non-LongLife oil"
If engine oils are used which do not comply with the VW standard for the extended service interval, it is not possible to ensure flexible service intervals.
The dash panel in this case should then be coded accordingly to "non-flexible", in other words to time or distance. In this case, the familiar service intervals (15000 km/1 year) then apply.
Coding of the service interval display is carried out using:
– vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552, or – fault reader V.A.G 1551, or

Service Dialogue
Customers will certainly have a lot of questions regarding the extended service interval. Here are the commonly asked questions with their answers.
The customer asks: The specialist answers:
How do I recognize whether the extended service interval including the flexible oil change applies to my car?
Is it necessary to use the new LongLife oils conforming to the standard VW 503 00 or VW 506 00?
The technology required for the extended service interval is not visible at first sight. That is why vehicles fitted with the extended service interval can be recognised from the data noted on the service sticker. The point at which the sticker is affixed to the vehicle varies according to the particular country. We affix the sticker and complete itaus.
No. The customer can choose. The new LongLife oils make it possible to drive for extended service intervals. The distance achieved is dependent in this case on the style of driving. If conventional oils are used, the previous intervals then apply: 15000 km or 1 year.
Do I have to drive particularly slowly in order to achieve the service intervals with flexible oil change?
Assuming I'm at a filling station where I can't get LongLife oil. What kind of oil can I use for topping up?
What is important is a balanced style of driving. If the car is driven often at full throttle and/or over short distances, it is clear that it must undergo an inspection more often than is the case for a car which is driven at constant speeds and often over long distances (motorways).
In exceptional cases, up to 0.5 liter of oils conforming to standard VW 502 00 or VW 505 00 may be topped up once without affecting the particular properties of the LongLife oil.

The customer asks: The specialist answers:
Is it possible for a workshop to determine whether the correct oil was chosen for topping up?
If the engine has occasionally been operated with conventional oil, is it then still possible to again use LongLife oil conforming to the standard VW 503 00 or VW 506 00?
No, this is unfortunately not possible. In their own interest, customers should pay particular attention to ensuring that the correct oils are always used. The extended service intervals are only possible with LongLife oils.
Yes. If the vehicle is fitted with the new technology, the system should be refilled with a LongLife oil and it is then possible to enjoy all the benefits of the extended service interval.
Is it also possible to enjoy the benefits of extended service intervals on older cars provided LongLife oils are used?
Is it possible to convert older cars to the extended service interval?
How often is it necessary to change the oil filter?
No. The newly developed oils do not help if the matching technology is not fitted.
No. This is not technically feasible.
Each time the oil is changed – as usual.
