INTRODUCTION

• This tool is intended for measuring distances indoors as
well as outdoors by means of laser beam projection

• When used properly, this tool easily and accurately
measures length, surface and volume; the tool is also
suitable for indirect length measurement

• Carefully read this instruction manual and pay

special attention to the safety instructions and
warnings 1; failure to follow these may result in
serious (eye) injury

• Before using the tool for the fi rst time, paste the
supplied sticker in your national language over the
English text of warning label Q 4

• Save this instruction manual for future reference

how bright the laser point is in relation to the ambient

SAFETY

• Do not look into the laser beam (laser radiation) 2

• Do not point the laser beam at persons or animals

• Do not place the tool in a position that may cause
anyone to look into the laser beam intentionally or
unintentionally

• Do not use any magnifying optical tools (such as
magnifying glasses, telescopes, or binoculars) to view
the laser beam

• Do not remove or damage the warning label on the tool

• Do not operate the tool in the presence of fl ammable
liquids, gases or dust

• Do not operate the tool with children around

• This tool should not be used by people under the age of
16 years

• Do not use the tool for any purpose other than those
mentioned in this instruction manual

• Always switch off the tool when not in use

USE

• Mounting of batteries 5

! ensure that the tool is switched off

- use exclusively alkaline-manganese or rechargeable

batteries

- turn tool upside down

- remove cover R

- insert 2 x AA (LR6) / 1,5V batteries (pay attention to

correct polarisation)

- mount cover R

- symbol 6a indicates the battery level status

- when symbol 6b appears in the display for the fi rst

time, it is still possible to take a limited amount of
measurements

- replace the batteries when symbol 6c appears in the

display

- always replace the complete set of batteries

- always remove the batteries from the tool, if the tool

will not be used for a long period

• On/off

- switch on the tool by pressing “on/off” (the laser

beam is not switched on yet)

- switch off the tool by pressing “on/off” for 2 seconds

- the tool automatically switches off after 5 minutes of

inactivity

• Metre/feet conversion
Pressing button E 4 repeatedly will subsequently

convert the measurement into millimetres, feet/inches,
and feet

• Operating the tool 7

- switch on the tool (symbol 8 appears in display
indicating that the tool is already in the length
measurement mode)

- select other measurement mode (surface/volume/
indirect/continuous), if desired

- press “CLR” for returning from surface/volume/
indirect/continuous measurement mode to length
measurement mode

- the tool measures from its rear by default (the tool
length is included in the measuring result); press
button K 4 for measuring from the front of the tool

- press “GO” to switch on the laser beam (symbol 9
will appear in display)

- aim the tool towards the target surface at a right
angle (use bubble level P 4)

! do not look into the laser beam
! do not point the laser beam at persons or animals

- press “GO” again; measured value appears in display
(laser beam switches off automatically)

- the laser beam also automatically switches off when
during approximately 20 seconds after switching on
the laser beam no measurements have been taken

! the measuring range is significantly reduced in

unfavorable conditions (especially when
measuring outdoors at intense sunlight) resulting
in error signals on the display

• Instructions for proper measurement

! do not move the tool during measuring (except in

continuous measurement mode)

- do not cover reception lens A 4 and laser beam
opening B 4 when measuring

- in unfavorable conditions (e.g. when measuring
outdoors at intense sunlight) use laser enhancing
glasses (SKIL accessory 2610395907) for increasing
the visibility of the laser dot

- when measuring against transparent, refl ecting,
porous or structured surfaces, place a piece of paper
on the target surface

• Surface measurement 0

- press button G 4

- aim the tool towards the fi rst target surface (length)

- press “GO” to switch on the laser beam

- press “GO” again; measured length appears on top
and bottom line of display

- aim the tool towards the second target surface
(width)

- press “GO” again; measured width appears on top
line of display while calculated surface appears on
bottom line of display

- press “GO” again for starting a completely new
surface measurement

- press “CLR” for returning to length measurement
mode

• Volume measurement !

- press button H 4

- aim the tool towards the fi rst target surface (length)

- press “GO” to switch on the laser beam

- press “GO” again; measured length appears on top
and bottom line of display

- aim the tool towards the second target surface
(width)

- press “GO” again; measured width appears on top
line of display while calculated surface appears on
bottom line of display

- aim the tool towards the third target surface (height)

- press “GO” again; measured height appears on top
line of display while calculated volume appears on
bottom line of display

- press “GO” again for starting a completely new
volume measurement

- press “CLR” for returning to length measurement
mode

• Indirect height measurement @

- press button J 4

- aim the tool towards the fi rst target surface (length

)

- press “GO” to switch on the laser beam

- press “GO” again; measured length appears on top
and bottom line of display

- aim the tool towards the second target surface
(height)

! tilt the tool, but do not change its rear position

- press “GO” again; measured length of diagonal line
appears on top line of display while calculated height
appears on bottom line of display

! ensure that the second measurement is longer

than the first measurement

- press “GO” again for starting a completely new
indirect height measurement

- press “CLR” for returning to length measurement
mode

! always keep in mind that indirect height

measurement results in just a rough indication,
and should only be used when a better and more
accurate approach is not possible

• Continuous measurement #

- press “GO” for 2 seconds (symbol $ starts fl ashing
and an acoustic signal sounds with a rapid tone
sequence)

- the laser beam remains switched on, so that the
actual distance can be read out continuously

- press “GO” or “CLR” for interrupting the continuous
measurement (the current measured value is
indicated in the display)

- the continuous measurement mode automatically
switches off after 10 minutes (the last measured
value remains indicated in the display) and can also
be ended by selecting another measurement mode

• Recall of previous measurements

- press “RCL” for reviewing previous measurements,
starting with the last measured distance (10 at the
maximum)

- press button L 4 to scroll upwards

- press button M 4 to scroll downwards

- press “RCL” again for returning to preceding
measurement mode

• Adding/subtracting measured values

- after taking a measurement, press the “+” or the “-”
button (a plus-sign or a minus-sign appears in the
display)

- press “GO” to switch on the laser beam (the fi rst
measured value appears on top line of display)

- press “GO” again for measuring (the second
measured value appears on top line of display while
the sum of the two measured values appears on
bottom line of display)

• Clearing measurements

- press “CLR” for clearing the last individual measured
value

- older measurements can be cleared by fi rst pressing
“RCL”, then using the “+” or the “-” button until the
unwanted value appears on the bottom line of the
display, and fi nally pressing “CLR” twice (press
“RCL” again for returning to preceding measurement
mode)

- in surface measurement mode the width and
calculated surface cannot be cleared

- in volume measurement mode the width and
calculated volume cannot be cleared

- in indirect height measurement mode the diagonal
line length and calculated height cannot be cleared

• Faulty measurement

- when the measurement is unsuccessful, “Error”
appears in display

- determine the cause, take corrective action, and take
the measurement again

Possible causes for faulty measurement:

- conditions too bright -> the ambient light is too bright

- target out of range -> the measuring range for this
tool is 0.3 - 80 m

- target too dark -> the target surface refl ects poorly

- temperature too high -> the optimum operating
termperature is 0°C to 40°C

- temperature too low -> the optimum operating
termperature is 0°C to 40°C

- low battery -> replace the batteries

- strong vibration -> tool was moved during measuring

- wrong input -> when indirect height measuring, the
second measurement must be longer than the fi rst
measurement

APPLICATION ADVICE

• Belt bag for easy and convenient storage %

• Do not expose the tool to continuous vibration or
extremely hot or cold temperatures

• Always keep the tool free of dust, moisture and direct
sunlight

• Clean the tool with a damp cloth and mild soap

! always remove the batteries before cleaning the

lens

• Do not disassemble or modify the tool in any way

• Do not attempt to change any part of the laser lens

• This SKIL product is guaranteed in accordance with
statutory/country-specifi c regulations; damage due to
normal wear and tear, overload or improper handling will
be excluded from the guarantee

• In case of a complaint, send the tool undismantled
together with proof of purchase to your dealer or the

accessories and packaging together with household
waste material (only for EU countries)
