Introduction

The Skil model 2503 Cordless Drill and Screwdriver features a 3/8" capacity chuck. This unit has the ideal speed and torque combination for both drilling and screwdriving applications. Your cordless drill can be fully charged and ready to use within 1 hour.

BATTERIES

Your Cordless Drill and Screwdriver is equipped with 6 nickel cadmium rechargeable batteries. Length of service from one charging will depend on the type of work you are doing, but the batteries can be recharged up to 1,000 times. Should it ever be necessary to replace the batteries, your nearest Skil Service Center or Authorized Service Station will be able to assist you. Check your Yellow Pages under "Tools-Electric" for the address. NOTE: Do not worry about overcharging. Your charger is designed to prevent overcharging.

NOTE: When you receive the tool the batteries will be nearly discharged. No special charging procedure is needed for new batteries. However, the battery will have only 80% capacity on this first charge. It's not necessary to intentionally discharge the batteries to achieve full battery capacity. Normal use of the tool will develop full battery capacity after one or two discharge cycles.

All of the above also applies to batteries that have not been used for two or more years. Batteries made in the past would show a lower voltage after only being partially discharged if they were not heavily used. This often called "memory" effect is not found in the cells in this tool. Also these cells retain their charge many times longer when not being used.

If you are a frequent user of the tool, leave it on charge at all times so that it is ready to use. These cells will not be affected under normal temperatures.

For maximum battery life, avoid prolonged charging at high temperatures.

CHUCK KEY

When not in use, the chuck key stores easily and securely in the handle of your tool. (Fig. 1).

HOLSTER (Optional Accessory)

Your new Cordless Drill and Screwdriver fits a holster with built-in bit storage. This feature is great for keeping both hands free when climbing a ladder, or when moving to another work area. (Attention: this holster is not adjustable. Use both notches as a safety lock).

FORWARD/OFF/REVERSE SWITCH

The Forward/Off/Reverse switch located on top of the tool allows you to turn the tool off, or change direction of rotation of the tool, (Fig.1).

FOR NORMAL ROTATION (Clockwise), move switch to arrow that points toward the chuck.

FOR REVERSE ROTATION (Counterclockwise), move switch to arrow that points away from the chuck. The reverse position will provide the counterclockwise rotation needed to remove screws.

TO TURN TOOL OFF, move switch to the center "OFF" position. Battery operated tools are always in operating condition when charged. The center "OFF" position is your protection against inadvertent use. Always keep the switch in the center "OFF" position when the tool is not in use, or when changing accessories. The trigger will depress in OFF position without activating the tool.

ADJUSTABLE CLUTCH

The adjustable clutch limits the amount of output torque delivered by the chuck. 5 clutch settings are possible. Output torque will increase as the clutch ring, (Fig. 2) is rotated from 1 to 4. The 5th position will lock up the clutch to permit drilling or driving heavy duty work. Occasionally you may experience difficulty rotating the clutch ring into position five, this is a normal condition. If this occurs rotate the ring down to position number one, (Be sure you are in position #1), hold the chuck firmly with your hand and pull the trigger, this will cause the clutch to slip. Once the clutch has slipped, release the trigger, and rotate the clutch ring into position five. It should rotate into position five with minimal effort.

CHARGING THE TOOL

Your new Cordless Drill and Screwdriver is not fully charged. Be sure to charge prior to initial use. To charge the tool, first put the forward/off/reverse

Page 5

switch in the center "OFF" position. Plug connector pin into the charging receptacle at rear of tool, then plug the charger into the power source.

STANDBY CHARGING

After you've inserted the connector pin in tool, and plugged the charger into a power source, the indicator light will go "on". This indicates the tool is in the "Trickle Charge" mode and batteries are receiving a slow charge. Don't worry about overcharging. Your charger is designed to prevent overcharging.

FAST CHARGE (1-HOUR)

Press the fast charge thermostat button located on end of handle (Fig. 3) until the indicator light turns "off". This indicates the batteries are receiving a fast charge. The indicator light will stay off as long as the batteries are fast charging.

After about an hour, the charging will be completed and the indicator light will go back "on". The charger is now operating in "Trickle Charge" mode. (If when last used the batteries were not completely discharged, the charging will be completed in less than one hour).

ACAUTION When in fast charge mode, do not remove connector pin from tool before end of charging period to maintain battery life. If it becomes necessary to remove the connector pin from the tool during fast charge, first disconnect the charger from the power source.

NOTE: If tool has become warm in use and connected to charger while still warm, the light will not immediately turn "off" when the fast charge thermostat button is pressed. However, after the tool cools down for a while, the button can be pressed to start the fast charge. DO NOT FAST CHARGE AT TEMPERATURES BELOW +40° F (4° C.)

AWARNING THIS CHARGER CAN BE USED ONLY WITH 60 CYCLE, 120 AC VOLTAGE (normal house voltage). After normal usage, the tool normally requires 1 hour charging time to reach full capacity.

To prevent damage to charger do not run the tool with the charger

connected.

INSERTING BITS

Move the forward/off/reverse switch to the center "OFF" position. Then open the jaws enough to insert the shank. Insert the bit up to the bit flutes. For large

bits insert bit as far as it will go. Center the bit as you close the jaws by hand. This will provide maximum contact between the jaws and the bit. To tighten the chuck, insert the chuck key into each of the three holes in succession and tighten firmly. The chuck can be released by using any one of the three holes. When finished, place the chuck key back in the storage area of your tool.

DRILLING AND DRIVING TIPS DRILLING PLASTIC

Use low speed when beginning the drilling operation. If possible, use a backing block. If not, ease up on the pressure just before the bit breaks through. This will keep you from splintering the back side. Then turn to the opposite side and complete the hole.

DRILLING METAL

When drilling, be sure to use enough pressure to keep the bit cutting. Insufficient pressure will allow the bit to spin in the hole. This will dull the bit and greatly shorten its life. Here are a couple of tips for drilling in metal. When drilling a large hole, it is usually faster in the long run to make a smaller hole and enlarge it to the required size. Also, you will find drilling in metal easier if you lubricate the tip of the bit occasionally with oil.

DRILLING MASONRY

Remember to always use carbide tipped bits for any sort of masonry work.

FASTENING WITH SCREWS

The procedure shown in (Fig. 4) will enable you to fasten materials together with your Cordless Drill and Screwdriver without stripping, splitting, or separating the material.

First, clamp the pieces together and drill the first hole 2/3 the diameter of the screw. If the material is soft, drill only 2/3 the proper length. If it is hard, drill the entire length.

Second, unclamp the pieces and drill the second hole the same diameter as the screw shank in the first or top piece of wood.

Third, if a flat head screw is used, countersink the hole to make the screw flush with the surface. Then, simply apply even pressure when driving the screw.

Page 6

The screw shank clearence hole in the first piece allows the screw head to pull the pieces tightly together

The adjustable screw drill accessory will do all of these operations quickly and easily. Screw drills are available for screw sizes No. 6, 8, 10 and 12.

Preventive maintenance of your Cordless Drill and Screwdriver is easy. There are just 3 steps to follow:

1 Use a clean cloth to wipe oil, grease and other deteriorating substances from the tool.

Certain cleaning agents and solvents A CAUTION can damage plastic parts. Some of these are: gasoline, carbon tetrachloride. chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia, and household detergents which contain ammonia. Avoiding use of these and other types of cleaning agents will minimize the probability of damage.

2. Store the tool where it is cool and dry. Avoid areas where the temperature will drop to 0° F or exceed +120° F

3. About once per vear (depending on use), return your tool and charger to the nearest Skil Factory Service Center, or Authorized Skil Service Station, or other competent repair service for the followina:

  • Parts cleaned and inspected
  • Relubricated with fresh lubricant
  • Electrical system tested
  • All repairs

All repairs, electrical or mechanical. should be attemped only by trained repairmen. Contact the nearest Skil Factory Service Center, or Authorized Service Station or other competent repair service. Use only identical replacement parts, any other may create a hazard.
