IMPORTANT PRE-INSTALLATION NOTES
Directed Electronics recommends that you have this product professionally installed.
Read this entire installation manual as well as the owner's
guide provide with your Sirius radio before proceeding with
the installation.
If the installation notes in this manual are not followed,
it may result in personal injury or damage to the various
components of the Sirius radio, damage to the motorcycle’s
audio system, damage to the motorcycle’s electrical system, or damage to the motorcycle’s mechanical system.
Familiarize yourself with any existing audio system on the
motorcycle by consulting the owner’s manuals for these
systems before making any wire or cable connections to
those systems.
The Dual Voltage Power Adapter is designed for 12 volt DC
negative ground motorcycle electrical systems only.
When faced with a blown fuse, always determine the cause
and correct the problem before replacing the fuse and be
sure to use a replacement fuse of the same type, rating and
amperage.
Do not cut any of the wires and cables included with the
Professional Motorcycle Install Kit or the Sirius radio being
8
installed. Any excess cable or wire length should be neatly
bundled or coiled, and secured in
Do not route wires or cables across sharp edges, or
through holes which could result in the wire or cable becoming damaged, chafed, cut, or shorted. If routing across
sharp edges is unavoidable, use the provided Expandable
sleeve to protect the wires. Use rubber grommets when
routing through holes. Make sure to route all wires away
from any moving parts that may damage them.
Avoid pinching, squashing, kinking, or crimping any of the
wires used in this install or any of the motorcycle’s existing
wires/cables during the installation.
Refer to the owner's guide for your Sirius radio to determine the voltage required in order to select correct plug to
be used for the output of the Dual Voltage Power Adapter.
The plugs provided with thise installation kit are designed
to only fit Sirius-branded radios that operate on either 5V
or 12V DC. They are keyed and sized to prevent inadvertent
connection to radios of incorrect voltage rating. Do not
force the coaxial output connector into the cradle of your
Sirius radio. If the connector does not appear to fit, stop
and make sure you have selected the correct output harness to match your radio's voltage rating.
It is very important to choose a mounting location that does
not interfere with the operator’s view of the road, gauges,
rearview mirrors or steering of the motorcycle. The most
common and intended location is somewhere on the Motorcycle’s handle bars. Some Motorcycles utilize clutch and
brake handle mounting clamps that are compatible with
the threads on the supplied Stainless Hexhead Cap Screws.
In some cases the factory screws can be used to attach the
Cradle Mounting Bracket and Metal Antenna Bracket. In
other cases you may find that the factory screws are too
short and will have to select the appropriate length Stainless Hexhead Cap Screws to replace the factory screws to
accommodate the added thickness of the Swivel Base and
Metal Antenna Bracket combination.
9
MOUNTING BRACKET.
On Motorcycles that do not have a matching bolt pattern
for the clutch and brake handle clamps, you will have to
use the included Handle Bar Clamp to attach the Cradle
Mounting Bracket and Metal Antenna Bracket assembly.
When attaching the Cradle Mounting Bracket directly to
the clutch or brake clamps be sure to re-tighten the clutch
or brake handle clamp so that the handles are oriented
the way they were originally and tight enough that they do
not move. (See sample pictures/illustrations of mounting
options and orientations of Cradle Mounting Bracket and
Metal Antenna Bracket).
On some motorcycles you may use the straight antenna
bracket bolted to a different part of the motorcycle.
At this point the Sirius Universal Cradle can be attached
with the supplied screws. In some cases it may be necessary to attach the Sirius Universal Cradle to the Cradle
Mounting Bracket while the clamp is loose to accommodate access to the screws with a screw driver. Once the
Sirius Universal Cradle is attached, plug in the Sirius Plug
and Play Tuner to assure that its location is appropriate
and does not interfere with the proper operation of the
Motorcycle.
At this point the Sirius Magnet Mount Antenna can be fitted
to the Metal Antenna Bracket. The Antenna plug can also
be plugged into the cradle at this time.
Bracket (shown here with cradle and antenna also
attached) mounted to handle bar using handle bar
clamp.
11
WIRING AND WIRE CONNECTIONS.
Refer to your Sirius Plug and Play Tuner guide to determine whether the Tuner is a 12 volt or 5 volt unit. This will
dictate which Coaxial Power cable you will need to use with
the Dual Voltage Power Supply. The three pin plug is for 12
volt units and the two pin plug is for 5 volt units. The plugs
are not interchangeable making it virtually impossible to
use the wrong one.
After determining the correct harness and plug you should
decide on a mounting location for the Power Supply. It is
important that the Power Supply not be exposed to the elements, especially rain! Mounting it securely under the seat
is usually a good choice.
Once an appropriate mounting location has been chosen
you can begin to wire the Power Supply to the Motorcycle’s
electrical system. The black ground wire should be connected first. It is recommended that it be attached securely
to the battery’s negative terminal. If the ground wire is too
short to reach the battery it will be necessary to cut the
ring terminal off, sufficiently extend the wire and crimp on
a new ring terminal. If, for some reason the battery is not
an option, a factory ground can be used but the battery is
always your best bet. It is not recommended to ever drill a
hole in the frame of the motorcycle.
12
Next, you should attach the supplied fuse holder to a
switched, positive 12 volt source. An accessory circuit is
preferred and can be identified as a wire that shows positive 12 volts when the ignition is on and drops to 0 volts
when the starter is cranking and then returns to positive
12 volts once the motorcycle is running. If an accessory circuit is not available or convenient then an ignition
source can be used. It will test the same as an accessory
circuit but the voltage will stay at positive 12 volts while the
starter is cranking.
The other end of the fuse holder can be attached to the red
lead of the Power Supply using the supplied butt connector. Make sure that the fuse is out of the fuse holder while
making this connection and during the remainder of the
installation. Wait until the installation is complete before
installing the fuse.
It is not recommended to use a constant source of voltage.
Doing so will run the risk of draining the battery by accidentally leaving the Sirius tuner on while the motorcycle is
not running. This could dramatically shorten the battery’s
life and cause it to not take a full charge anymore.
CONNECTING THE SIRIUS RADIO TO THE MOTORCYCLE’S SOUND SYSTEM.
There are three different ways to connect the Sirius Tuner
to a Motorcycle’s Sound System. The method of connection
will depend on the brand of Motorcycle and the particular
sound system installed on it.
Many Motorcycle Sound Systems do not have an auxiliary input. Therefore it is necessary in these cases to FM
modulate the Sirius audio to the Sound System. One option
is to use the wireless FM modulator built into the Sirius
Tuner by following the instructions for the wireless modulator contained in the tuner’s operation guide.
In some cases the wireless signal will not be strong enough
to overcome interference from local FM stations. In this
case it is recommended to use the optional FM Direct Audio
relay (Part #: FMDA25). this relay will install between the
motorcycle's radio and the FM antenna. Refer to FMDA25
install guide for details.
Some Motorcycle radios have an auxiliary input in the form
of a 3.5mm stereo input jack. These auxiliary inputs can be
connected to the Sirius Tuner Cradle by using the supplied
3.5mm stereo cord. One end plugged into the radio auxiliary input and the other into the line out of the Sirius Tuner
Cradle. Listening to the Sirius Tuner would then be accomplished by simply selecting the radio’s auxiliary input.
You may also be able to connect your Sirius radio directly
to a helmet earphone system. The output voltage of Sirius
radios can drive some high efficiency earbuds without an
external amplifier.
Before preceding double check all connections and mounting points assuring that they are all secure and tight.
At this point install the fuse into the fuse holder and seat
the Sirius radio into the cradle. Turn the Motorcycle’s ignition on and turn the Sirius radio on. If the Tuner has never
been activated before be sure to let it update the channels as described in the radio’s operation manual. Once
the channels have updated follow the operation guide’s
instructions to select the desired FM frequency you wish to
use if you are using one of the FM Modulating techniques
described previously and verify that it is working with no
distortion or interference. If you are using an available
auxiliary input to the radio simply select the auxiliary
source on the radio and verify that it is playing the Sirius
Weather Channel (184). You can now contact Sirius to have
your radio activated and start enjoying all of the channels
Sirius has to offer.
At this point you can make final adjustments to the Swivel
or Cradle Mounting Bracket if necessary and replace any
parts of the Motorcycle that may have been removed to accommodate the installation such as the seat.
Make sure to use one of the supplied Moisture Guards
whenever the Motorcycle is being operated in inclement
weather to protect the Sirius radio. You should always
remove the radio and store it in a safe dry location when
not in use. The Sirius Universal Cradle is not designed for
exposure to moisture and should always be kept covered
with the moisture Guard or removed when not in use.
Since the moisture guard is an extremely snug fit please
follow these instructions to avoid difficulty when removing
the moisture guard from your Sirius radio.
1 Unfasten the moisture guard's velcro flaps from
beneath cradle (make sure all flaps are exposed to
prevent them from inadvertently getting caught during
removal).
2 In this step remove the Sirius radio along with
moisture guard from cradle first before attempting to
remove moisture guard from radio. Using thumb and
fingers grasp the moisture guard and radio firmly on
both sides (do not grasp front and back as damage to
the display may result). Pull system vertically from
cradle until clear (Fig A).
3 Now with your Sirius radio detached from cradle the
moisture guard can be removed from the radio (Fig B).
Caution: On some radios (SP4 model, used in this exam-
ple) there is a button control that protrudes through
an opening in the front of the moisture guard. When
removing guard from this radio, slide finger under
moisture guard and lift until this area of the moisture
guard clears this control. Once cleared and free from
contraint, slowly work radio out of guard.
