to Change Needle
When your needle becomes blunt or bent, change it right away. Use a small screwdriver, if necessary, to loosen and tighten the screw. Insert the new needle with the flat side toward the left.
Before you begin, be sure that the needle bar is up and the presser foot in down.

the Right Tension
A perfect seam is strong, flat and smooth. To make a perfect seam the tension on your thread must be just right. Tension is adjusted by turning the tension thumb nut.
If your stitching looks like this, make it tighter by turning the tension thumb nut to the right.
If your stitching looks like this, make it looser by turning the tension thumb nut to the left.
When your seam looks like this, the tension is just right.

To Sew a Fine Seam continued...
Sewhandy model 40k
An easy way to end a seam is to stitch right off the edge of the fabric. Make a little chain about one inch long. Cut in the middle.
To start your next seam, hold the fabric edge against the front of the presser foot and turn the hand wheel. The fabric will "feed" under the foot and you are on your way.
