The communicating device transponder (CDT) is a 2120 system component that is connected to the BMUX via a 2120 communications channel (see Figure 1).

The CDT mounts in a 2-, 4-, or 6-unit backbox (see Figure 2). Each CDT has two transponder addresses used to identify its location in the 2120 system (you only select the lower address via switches). Each CDT also has
monitor and control points.

The 2120 CDT allows use of addressable devices to provide individual reporting. So, if an addressable smoke detector senses smoke, its activation will result in a report that specifically identifies the location of that detector.
Look at Figure 3. You can see that all addressable devices are connected to the CDT panel via a twisted, shielded
wire pair called MAPNET II@.

As Figure 3 shows, there are four basic types of addressable devices:
l
Addressable smoke detectors (ASDs), requiring only the MAPNET II@ wire pair for both data and power.
l
Addressable pull stations (APSs), requiring only the MAPNET II@ wire pair for both data and power.
l
lnferface addressable modules (IAMs), requiring only the MAPNET II@ wire pair for both data and power. IAMs interface a single conventional device - such as a pull station or smoke detector - to a CDT.
l
Zone addressable modules (ZAMs), requiring the MAPNET II@ wire pair for data, a pair for power and a pair to connect the external monitor or control device wiring. A monitor ZAM interfaces a zone of conventional alarm-initiating devices to the CDT. A control ZAM interfaces a single controlled device to the CDT. A signal ZAM interfaces a zone of indicating devices to the CDT (signal ZAMs may require a fourth wire pair for audio or phone riser input).
Since addressable devices have unique locations, each device’s address must be proper/y set. The address for each device on a MAPNET II@ MUST be set when you install the device.
This technical reference provides installation instructions for the CDT panel. Instructions for setting panel and device
switch settings are provided in this document.

The CDT panel is shipped with cabinet drawings for use during installation. Information on reading cabinet drawings
can be found in the

Note:
CDT cabinet drawings refer you to M-2120-CDT wiring diagrams. These wiring diagrams:
l
Tell you how the MAPNET II@ and power line (if required) are connected to addressable devices.
AND
l
Tell you how conventional devices are connected to ZAMs and IAMs.
Consult your Simplex Representative if you do not receive the proper system documentation.
INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS
A. Use twisted, shielded pair for all MAPNET II@ lines.
B. Each CDT equipment cabinet should be connected to building ground via a single, unbroken conductor
(12AWG wire, typical). Conduit ground is not sufficient.
C. MAKE NO CONNECTIONS TO CDTs WITH POWER APPLIED.
D. Before applying power to CDT equipment:
l
Verify that power connections have been terminated at the proper terminals.
l
Verify that all wiring is free of grounds.
E. Apply power to equipment ONLY in the presence of a qualified Simplex Technical Representative (TR) and
in the following sequence:
l
Apply AC power first.
l
Apply battery power last.
F. NEVER APPLY OR DISCONNECT CDT EQUIPMENT POWER BY USING AN INTERCONNECT PLUG.

The following is a set of recommended procedures to follow during CDT installation. Before you begin wiring:
l
Ensure that all system interconnection and wiring diagrams for your system are provided.
l
All backboxes (cabinets) and the associated equipment should be properly installed and grounded via a single, unbroken conductor (12AWG, typical). Conduit ground is NOT sufficient.
Mounting

1. Install the CDT’s backbox using the information in the section entitled “Backboxes” in the
System Installation
manual. Use the transponder number on the CDT equipment shipping carton to help you

find the cabinet’s proper location.
2. Install the CDT (and other equipment, if applicable) into the backbox.
Data and Power Connections
3. Connect the 2120 communications channel to the CDT (Figure 4). Use the system data interconnect drawing and the appropriate CDT cabinet drawing to determine proper connections.

4. (If required) Connect the power line to the CDT (Figure 5). Use the system power interconnect drawing and the appropriate CDT cabinet drawing to determine required connections. DO NOT APPLY POWER.

5. Leave the MAPNET II@ disconnected from the CDT panel.

6. The TR will verify that all data, audio/telephone, and power line connections have been properly made. Then, with power connected, the TR will verify the operation of the system’s basic components. When the TR has completed his preliminary checkout, power down all equipment.

7. If the addressable devices on the MAPNET II’ have not yet been installed, do so now.
8. Connect the MAPNET II@ lines to the CDT cabinet’s contractor terminal block (shown in the cabinet drawing) and peripheral devices (using the M-2120-CDT wiring diagrams).

SWITCH SETTINGS
The CDT panel (Figure 6) contains three switch packages (SW1 through SW3), a pushbutton switch (SW4) that resets the CDT’s microprocessor when pressed, and six jumpers (JWl through JW6).

SW1 is used to set the CDT’s transponder address and communications baud rate. Set switches SWl-1 and SW1 -2 as follows:

‘SW2 is used to tell the CDT how many monitor points are present (from zero to 128 possible monitor devices).

Switches SW3-1 through SW3-7 are used to tell the CDT how many control points are present (from zero to 64 possible control devices).
Switch SW3-8 is used to indicate whether the MAPNET II@ is single line or McCulloh loop. Set SW3-8 ONto indicate McCulloh loop; set SW3-8 OFF to indicate single line.
CAUTION:
Jumpers JWl through JW6 are set as indicated below.
At least one switch on either SW2 or SW3 must be OFF or the CDT panel will not operate.
JW7 and JWZ are IN, and are not normally field-alterable.
JW3 is IN for local mode operation.
JW4 is OUT, and is not normally field-alterable.
JW5 is IN when 2120 communications occur via RS232C interface, and OUT for normal communications.
JW6 is OUT when 2120 communications occur via RS232C interface and IN for normal communications.

Note:
Control ZAM Addressing begins with device number 128 and ends with device number 65 (64 possible control devices per CDT panel). This numbering scheme exists because of the way in which the CDT panel’s internal memory is laid out. Thus, the first control device on a MAPNET II@ - as far as addressing is concerned - will “occupy” the 128th position in CDT memory, the second control device will “occupy” the
727th position in CDT memory, etc.
If you look at Figure 7 below, you can see that monitor point addressing begins at the “bottom” of CDT
memory, while control point addressing begins at the “top” of CDT memory.

These procedures must be performed in the presence of (or by) a Simplex Technical Representative. Do not apply power to equipment unless the TR is present.
CDT checkout is broken up into preliminary checkout and final checkout.

1. Verify that 120VAC is properly terminated at TB2 of the power supply as shown in Figure 8.
ENSURE THAT ALL POWER IS OFF BEFORE PROCEEDING.
To simplify preliminary CDT checkout, group CDTs according to the power source. Check out all CDTs associated with the same supply and then proceed to the next group of CDTs.
Perform Steps 1 through 7 for CDT cabinets containing a CDT power supply board (P/N 562-464).

Requirement:
VOM indicates no shorts between each wire and ground. If this requirement is not met for all
wiring connected at TB3, then troubleshoot and repair the wiring fault.
6. Check for shorts between each “+” (red) and “-I’ (black) contractor-installed wire connected at TB3 of the supply.

7. Reconnect the ground wire removed in Step 2.
8. Locate the CDT panel board (P/N 562-562).
9. Verify that the incoming and outgoing 2120 communications lines are connected to the CDT at TBl as shown in Figure 10.

The protective cardboard cover over the power supply must be removed to access components.
Locate R2, Pl, R15, R6, and R21 (Figure 11).
Remove the batteries first and then AC power.
Disconnect connector Pl
Reconnect AC power only.
Adjust R15 fully clockwise.
Connect the VOM across the RED (+) and BLACK (0 volts) battery connections.
Adjust R6 until VOM reads about 26 volts.
Connect the VOM across the left side of R2 (+) and the BLACK battery connector (0 volts).
SLOWLY adjust R15. At some point, the voltage reading on the VOM will SUDDENLY DROP from about 33 volts to approximately 10 volts. This is the TRIP POINT. Stop at this point.
Now, SLOWLY adjust R6 clockwise until the VOM reading trips back to about 33 volts. Stop at this point.
Connect the VOM as in Step 6 above. The VOM should read about 28 volts.
Readjust R6 until the VOM reads about 27

Connect the VOM across TBl-1 (+) and TBl-2 (-).

14. Leave the power applied to this power supply and proceed to the next CDT.
15. (New 2120 installations only) Once you have checked out all CDTs in the system and all other 2120 equipment, perform the BMUX checkout procedures in the 2120 Multiplex System Checkout Procedures manual (MUX2­21-004).
Note:
When you finally power-up the BMUX, each CDT that comes up will report a LOCAL LOOP COMM FAIL error message. Ignore the message for the time being; it will clear once the CDT’s MAPNET II@ lines are installed.
15. When you have completed preliminary checkout of all CDTs, remove power from them in the following sequence:
l
Disconnect batteries first.
l
Disconnect AC last.

NOTIFY BUILDING PERSONNEL AND APPROPRIATE AUTHORITIES (FIRE AND POLlCf DEPARTMENTS, ETC.) BEFORE PROCEEDING.
A. Identification of Contractor Wiring Errors
1. Before the contractor applies power to any CDTs, verify that the MAPNET II@ communications lines are properly terminated on each CDT using Figure A or B as appropriate from the M-2120-CDT wiring diagrams, or by using Figures 12 and 13.
2. The contractor should now apply power to each system component by:
l
Applying AC power first.
l
Connecting batteries last.
3. (New 2120 installations only) Allow two minutes for the BMUX to initialize.

You will need the CMS file covering each CDT to locate devices reported in Step 4.
2: Each CDT uses two transponder addresses; addressable devices are reported on either of the CDT
addresses.
4. Identify all CDT monitor and control device troubles. Remember: The BMUX reports CDT device troubles per
addressable device, so the ‘CDT trouble reports you receive will refer directly to specific MAPNET II@ devices.
Use the first three digits of the device’s point number to determine the location of the associated CDT panel.
Note:
If you get either a LOCAL LOOP COMM FAIL or LOCAL LOOP MCCULLOH trouble report from a CDT, then
the MAPNET II@ lines associated with the reported CDT are disconnected from the panel, their polarity is
reversed, or fuse Fl on the CDT panel is open.
5. If there is a string of devices on the same MAPNET II@ that has troubles, look for:
0 Open wiring at a branch circuit junction box.
l
Open wiring in the branch circuit itself.
l
MAPNET II@ wire pairs reversed at a branch circuit junction box.

6. Locate other troubled devices and:
l
Check device addressing using the CMS file.
l
Check device wiring.
If the wiring and~address check out properly, replace the troubled device.
Note:
If two or more devices have the same address setting, then there will be one or more troubles associated with the devices which have duplicate switch settings. Use half-splitting to isolate the improperly addressed devices.
B. CDT Functional Checkout
Activate all CDT peripherals and verify that the proper reports are received at the BMUX. Use SMPL operating commands to operate CDT control or signal ZAMs. If DEVICES DO NOT REPORT, CHECK SW2 AND SW3 SETTINGS ON CDT PANEL.
