To ensure the safety of your E-BIKE, make sure to also refer to the user's manual for each product such as the
battery, battery charger, cycle computer, and switch unit.

Do not disassemble or modify the product. This may cause the product to not operate correctly, and you may
suddenly fall and be seriously injured.

Riding precautions

Be sufficiently familiar with how to start the power assisted bicycle before riding on busy streets.

You may start the bicycle unexpectedly, which may result in an accident.

Be careful not to let the hemming of your clothes get caught in the chain while riding.

You may fall and be seriously injured.

Keep your fingers away from the chainrings, sprockets, and chain.

They can be seriously injured if caught in the drive train. For DU-EP801 and DU-EP600, please note that when
FREE SHIFT is enabled, the chainrings may rotate due to the operation of the drive unit, even when you are
not pedaling.

Ensure that head and tail lights can turn on before riding the bicycle.

Safety precautions

Be sure to remove the battery and charging cable before wiring or attaching parts to the bicycle.

Failure to do so may cause an electric shock.

Do not touch the drive unit when it has been continuously used for a long period of time.

The surface of the drive unit becomes hot and could cause burns.

Clean the chain with an appropriate chain cleaner regularly.

Intervals between maintenance depend on the use and riding circumstances.

Never use alkali- or acid-based solvents such as rust cleaners.

If those solvents are used the chain might break and cause serious injury.

Be sure to follow the instructions provided in the manuals when installing the product.

Only use SHIMANO genuine parts. If a component or replacement part is incorrectly assembled or adjusted, it
can lead to component failure and cause the rider to lose control and crash.

Riding precautions

Observe the instructions in the manual for the bicycle in order to ride safely.

There are two generations of the SHIMANO STEPS battery management system: first generation and second
generation (Gen.2).

This manual only describes products compatible with Gen.2.

With some exceptions, first-generation and Gen.2 products of SHIMANO STEPS components are not compatible
with each other. For details, refer to the compatibility information on the SHIMANO product website (

https://productinfo.shimano.com/#/com ).

The Gen.2 battery and compatible battery mount are marked “Gen.2” as indicated in the figure or have a
“Gen.2” label.

Anti-tampering function

Anti-tampering function

Do not attempt to modify your drive unit's output power or maximum assist speed. Doing this may increase the
risk of serious injury to yourself and others. It may also put you at legal risk if the modification violates national
or regional regulations.
It may be against the law for a SHIMANO drive unit to be used outside the countries or regions where it is
authorized for sale if it does not meet the applicable laws and regulations applicable for use in such areas. Make
sure to confirm that the applicable laws and regulations are complied with before using the product in such
places.

Do not tamper with peripheral devices related to the drive unit or assist control of e-bikes. Doing so will
generally reduce the service life of the system and risk damaging the drive unit, other components, and the bike
itself. It may also void the warranties of SHIMANO products used as components of the bike that has been
tampered with. Using the system in a state that it was not designed for may threaten the safety of yourself and
passers-by. Tampering with the bike increases the risk to the lives, bodies, and property of others, and the risk of
substantial personal liability costs and criminal prosecution in the event of an accident.

SHIMANO STEPS systems detect whether the system has been tampered with and display an error code ( E295 )
that indicates tampering (*1). The error code ( E295 ) can be temporarily cleared by turning the power off, then
on again. However, after the allowable number of times displaying error code E295 has been exceeded,
SHIMANO STEPS will enter Safe Mode ( E299 ). While in Safe Mode ( E299 ), the assist function of the drive unit
will stop.
Safe Mode ( E299 ) can only be deactivated by a special device at a SHIMANO office or authorized SHIMANO
product distributor. It may be impossible to deactivate Safe Mode ( E299 ) in certain situations.

Avoid wearing clothing that may get caught in a chain or wheel, as this may cause an accident.

Be sure to attach dummy plugs to any unused E-TUBE ports.

For installation and adjustment of the product, consult the place of purchase.

The components are designed to be fully waterproofed to withstand wet weather riding conditions; however,
do not deliberately place them into water.

Do not clean the bicycle with a high-pressure wash. If water gets into any of the components, operating
problems or rusting may result.

Do not turn the bicycle upside down. There is a risk of damage to the cycle computer and switch unit.

Handle the components carefully, and avoid subjecting them to strong shock.

Although the bicycle still functions as a normal bicycle even when the battery is removed, the light will not
turn on if it is connected to the electric power system. Be aware that using the bicycle under these conditions
will be considered non-observance of the road traffic laws in Germany.

When carrying the assist bicycle in a car, remove the battery from the bicycle and place it on a stable surface in
the car.

Contact the place of purchase for updates of the component software. The most up-to-date information is
available on the SHIMANO website.

Products are not guaranteed against natural wear and deterioration from normal use and aging.

For maximum performance we highly recommend SHIMANO lubricants and maintenance products.

Connection and communication with smartphone

Components that support Bluetooth®LE are required to connect the bicycle to a smartphone. Using E-TUBE
PROJECT Cyclist enables you to perform a range of tasks, such as customizing individual components or the
system, or updating firmware.

Care and maintenance

Do not use the thinners or harsh solvents to clean the products. Such substances may damage the surface.
When cleaning the products, use a cloth moistened with a neutral detergent diluted with water.

The chainrings and sprockets should be periodically washed with a neutral detergent. In addition, cleaning the
chain with neutral detergent and lubricating it can be an effective way of extending the life of the chainrings,
sprockets, and the chain.

Use a damp, well wrung out cloth when cleaning the battery and plastic cover.

Assist

The proper level of assistance cannot be achieved unless the proper settings have been made (proper
adjustment of the chain tension, etc.), so consult with the place of purchase.

Is there any looseness or damage in the component parts?

Do any abnormal noises occur while riding?

Is there sufficient charge remaining in the battery?

Pursuing the bicycle-like feel

With its lightweight and compact design, the drive unit is meant to provide a bicycle-like feel with reduced
operation noise and powerful output.

Improved customization

Automatic gear shifting is compatible with both the assist profile and the rear derailleur, enabling a wide
range of customization.

Compatibility with a wide range of bicycle categories

From sport riding and city cycling to cargo bicycles designed for transporting goods, assist bicycles can be used
for many applications.

Assist profile

On assist bicycles with cycle computers, you can select from two assist profiles, [BASIC] and [Fine tune], that
determine the riding comfort. In addition, by connecting to E-TUBE PROJECT, you can perform a wider range of
customization than before.

[BASIC]

Select the level of assistance from three modes according to riding conditions. One of the following two
combinations is set by default:

[BOOST] / [TRAIL] / [ECO]: A combination of assist modes for sport riding.

[HIGH] / [NORMAL] / [ECO]: A combination of assist modes for comfortable riding in urban settings.

When battery levels are unstable, or when assist power is not required, you can turn assist mode to [OFF].

[Fine tune]

The riding comfort of the assist bicycle is determined by the relationship between the force applied to the pedals
and the drive unit output, and the maximum output of the drive unit. [Fine tune] supports a wide range of
riding conditions with up to 15 levels of settings.

The number of settings registered by default depends on the bicycle.

The drive unit's maximum output may be capped by the bicycle manufacturer depending on national and
regional laws and regulations.

Automatic gear shifting and FREE SHIFT

Automatic gear shifting

Detects riding conditions with a sensor to further improve riding via computer-controlled automatic gear
shifting. Automatic gear shifting is available for bicycles with a compatible electronic shifting unit. The settings
that can be configured differ for the rear derailleur and internal geared hub. With automatic gear shifting, you
can register up to two combinations of settings and use the shift switch to switch between them according to
riding conditions.

Certain 10/11-level gear shifting models of Di2 rear derailleurs are compatible with automatic gear
shifting. For details, check the product lineup on the SHIMANO product website .

Only 5/8-level gear shifting models of Di2 internal geared hubs are compatible with automatic gear
shifting.

FREE SHIFT (DU-EP801 / DU-EP600)

The rear derailleur operates when the cassette rotates, to complete gear shifting by changing the sprocket where
the chain is. Therefore, it is necessary to perform gear shifting operations while pedaling.

FREE SHIFT is a function for successfully completing the gear shifting operations of the rear derailleur when the
rider is not pedaling. Even if the rider is not pedaling while riding, the drive unit rotates the chainring according
to the gear shifting operations of the rear derailleur, and moves the chain to rotate the cassette.

FREE SHIFT can be enabled with automatic gear shifting operations ([AUTOMATIC FREE SHIFT]) and manual gear
shifting operations performed by the rider ([MANUAL FREE SHIFT]).

Drive unit operation is required to enable FREE SHIFT. Therefore, if the assist function stops because the
battery level is too low, FREE SHIFT will also stop functioning.

For safety reasons, FREE SHIFT is designed to not operate well when the rear wheel of the bicycle is raised
off the ground with a workbench, etc.

Rear derailleur automatic gear shifting settings

You can configure the following settings in E-TUBE PROJECT . FREE SHIFT can be set for a rear derailleur.

[AUTO SHIFT while pedaling]

Turn automatic gear shifting while pedaling ON or OFF. When turned ON, you can use the switch unit to change
to automatic gear shifting.

[AUTOMATIC FREE SHIFT]

Set FREE SHIFT via automatic gear shifting ON or OFF. When set to ON, automatic gear shifting also operates
when the rider is not pedaling.

[MANUAL FREE SHIFT]

Set FREE SHIFT via manual gear shifting ON or OFF. When set to ON, gear shifting operations can be performed
normally when the rider is not pedaling.

[Shift timing]

Set the gear shifting timing during automatic gear shifting, based on the cadence. You can also set the gear
shifting response when the system is subject to a heavy load on a steep rising slope in [Climbing response].

[Riding scene]

You can select the automatic gear shifting characteristics according to the style of riding.

[MTB] is suitable for rough terrain with many steep slopes and speed changes.

[Pavement] is suitable for riding on paved surfaces with few steep slopes in city streets. It is also suitable for
situations where the bicycle frequently stops due to traffic signals.

[Start gear]

Set the lower limit for the gear position to automatically shift to when starting from a stop during riding. When
subject to a heavy load on a rising slope, the system makes starting from a stop even easier by shifting to a lower
gear position than that set here.

The [Shift timing] setting may be able to be changed from the cycle computer, depending on the cycle
computer you are using.

You can configure the following settings in E-TUBE PROJECT .

[Shift timing]

Set the gear shifting timing during automatic gear shifting, based on the cadence. You can also set the gear
shifting response when the system is subject to a heavy load on a steep rising slope in [Climbing response].

[Start mode]

Automatically shifts to the set gear position when the bicycle is stopped to make it easier to start pedaling again.
If you gear shift into a gear that is lower than the gear position set while the bicycle is stopped, the gear will not
shift up automatically.

The [Shift timing] and [Start mode] settings may be able to be changed from the cycle computer,
depending on the cycle computer you are using.

For a bicycle with a Di2 internal geared hub, [Start mode] can also be enabled for manual gear shifting.

You cannot use the battery immediately after shipment.

The battery can be used after charging it with the designated battery charger.

Be sure to charge it before use. The battery can be used when the LED on it turns on.

Please read the “ SHIMANO STEPS Special Battery and Parts User's Manual ” for how to charge and handle the
battery.

When the battery level is low, system functions will be shut off in the following order:

Power assist/FREE SHIFT(1)

Electronic/automatic gear shifting, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), light(2)

FREE SHIFT and the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) are only supported by the DU-EP801 and DU-EP600.*

Depending on the assist bicycle used, the installed battery, cycle computer, and switch unit may differ from
what is listed here. Also refer to the user's manual of the components you are using listed in “ Booklet

structure .”

Check the compatibility of the battery and battery charger. Some batteries may not be chargeable with a
conventional battery charger.

Depending on the assist bicycle, you change the assist mode with the function switch of the satellite
system ON/OFF switch. Refer to “ Satellite System ON/OFF Switch User's Manual ” for details.

Get on the bicycle and start riding.

Be sure to learn the brake control characteristics and other characteristics. Brake handling may vary
slightly depending on the bicycle you are using.

Turn the power OFF and park your bicycle when you arrive at your destination.5.

SHIMANO STEPS has a function where assist works even when you are walking and pushing the assist bicycle.

Depending on the region of use, you may not be able to use it due to the laws of the region. In this case, the
operations described here are disabled.

This function cannot be used with bicycles that do not have assist switch installed.

Stop and switch to walk assist mode.

Press and hold Y on the assist switch (left side of the handlebar) until it reaches the following state:

Cycle computer: [WALK] is displayed

5-switch type: LED2 lights up blue

If nothing is done for one minute after switching to walk assist mode, it will switch back to the assist
mode that was selected before switching.

Carefully push the bicycle while pressing Y again.

The drive unit operates while Y is pressed to assist you in pushing the bicycle.

When the drive unit is operating, the LED and screen displays change as shown in the figure.

Walk assist operates at a maximum of 6 km/h. Be careful because the bicycle starts moving just by
pressing Y.

During electronic gear shifting, the level of assistance of walk assist and speed are controlled by the
current gear position.

Depending on the assist bicycle used, you may be able to switch between automatic and manual gear shifting.

Automatic gear shifting: Automatically shifts gears based on riding conditions. Manual gear shifting
operations are possible even when automatic gear shifting is set.

Manual gear shifting: This is standard electronic gear shifting. Gears are shifted by operating the shift switch.

Switch between automatic and manual gear shifting.

The shift switch (right side of the handlebar) is operated as follows, depending on the type.
