AOC-20i Dual Tower with and without AOC-20s
1.1 Compatibility:
AOC-20i towers used for any Dual Tower installation must have the same Firmware
generation: Both must have Version 2.1 or lower (min. 1.8) or Version 3.0 or higher (current Version is 3.20). The Version of AOC-20s is independent but must be Version 1.4 or higher (current version is 3.50).
On GC-2010 (Plus) independent what software control is used the communication
parameter setting on both AOC-20i towers is F83=001 and F84=000.
AOC-20i Dual Tower works with internal and external control board.

1.2 Mounting:
On GC-2010 (Plus) with two analytical lines there are two different arrangements of the AOC-20i mounting pins (two mounting kits are required; P/N 221-44548-93). AOC-20i Dual Tower with AOC-20s works only if the injectors are mounted on position 6 and 7.

On the AOC-20i control board (internal or external) the front AOC-20i Tower (Main) must be connected to “Injector 1”, the rear side AOC-20i Tower (Sub) to “Injector 2” and the AOC­20s to “Sampler”
Connect the Start/Ready cables. For ClassVP/EZchrom software it is essential that the two Ready cables are not connected and that they have no contact closure (isolate them with tape). For all other software packages they should be connected to the GC Ready out.
2.1 AOC-20i Dual Tower configuration with AOC-20s:
In order to have defined settings of all functions in both AOC-20i a “hard” reset of both AOC­20i was performed. Normally the reset in not required but avoids that former parameter settings on the AOC-20i might cause problems with Dual Tower functionality.
It is not needed to have the rear side (SUB) Tower correctly mounted for the following procedure. Both towers can be placed as shown below.

Reset of all Functions of AOC-20i to default settings:
The procedure must be done with both Towers separately
1) Check F84=000
2) In GC-2010 (Plus) “Option / AOC-20i Menu” switch AOC-20i OFF (see Fig. 6)
3) Keep the SAMPLE WASH key pressed and turn AOC-20i ON.
4) Release SAMPLE WASH key and set F60=001; press Enter
All LED on AOC-20i flashes shortly
5) Check F84 again. If it has changed F84=001 the “hard” reset was successful.

Now the parameter settings for Dual Tower can be made. Set on both AOC-20i Towers:
F83=001, press Enter F84=000, press Enter F97=000, press Enter
After these settings were made on both towers switch them OFF on the GC-2010 (Plus). If not done already mount the two Towers correctly, and switch them ON again.
For Dual Tower with AOC-20s F97 must be 000, for Dual Tower without AOC-20s F97 must be 001, on both Towers!
On the GC you need to configure a Dual Line System:

Press the “Option” button (if necessary several times) until you see the AOC-20i menu on screen (Fig. 8). Most likely the GC has already recognized the dual tower configuration and displays the headline “Dual AOC-20i+s” (Fig.8). If the display shows only “Single AOC­20i+s” (Fig.6) you need to go into the sampler menu by pressing the PF1 button (in necessary press toggle button until “Sampler” appears above PF1 button, Fig. 7).

Go back into main menu. Switch AOC POWER Off and ON again (see Fig. 6). Wait for “AOC link OK” message. In AOC options the GC should display:

3.1 AOC-20i Dual Tower configuration without AOC-20s:
Important:
AOC-20s must not be connected to the “Sampler” port of the AOC-20i control board (internal or external). The GC recognizes the connection and AOC-20i Dual Tower without AOC-20s cannot be configured!
AOC-20i Dual Tower without AOC-20s is still a special configuration. You might get the error message “LE2” due to communication problems. This happens if F97 is not set correctly.
“Hard” Reset In order to have defined settings of all functions in both AOC-20i a “hard” reset of both AOC-
20i was performed. Normally the reset in not required but avoids that former parameter settings on the AOC-20i
It is not needed to have the rear side (SUB) Tower correctly mounted for the following procedure. Both towers can be placed as shown in Fig. 4.
Reset of all Functions of AOC-20i to default settings:
The procedure must be done with both Towers separately
1) Check F84=000
2) In GC-2010 (Plus) “Option / AOC-20i Menu” switch AOC-20i OFF
3) Keep the SAMPLE WASH key pressed and turn AOC-20i ON.
4) Release SAMPLE WASH key and set F60=001; press Enter
All LED on AOC-20i flashes shortly
5) Check F84 again. If it has changed F84=001 the “hard” reset was successful.
Now the parameter settings for Dual Tower can be made. Set on both AOC-20i Towers:
F83=001, press Enter F84=000, press Enter F97=001, press Enter
After these settings were made on both towers switch them OFF on the GC-2010 (Plus). If not done already mount the two Towers correctly, and switch them ON again.
For Dual Tower without AOC-20s F97 must be 001, for Dual Tower with AOC-20s F97 must be 000, on both Towers!
Make a two line configuration as shown in Fig. 5.
If everything worked in AOC-20i Options the Headline Shows “Dual AOC-20i Main” (and you can toggle to “Dual AOC-20i Sub” via PF1. In the PF menu of the display you find no “Sampler” button anymore (see Fig.6) only the “Sub AOC” choice.

If GC-2010 (Plus) still offers the “Sampler” settings (as shown in Fig. 7) select:

In the AOC Parameter settings switch “AOC POWER” OFF and ON again (see Fig. 6). Wait for the “AOC link OK” message. Now the display should show:

Please notice:
If AOC-20i Dual Tower without AOC-20s is configured and you switch GC Power ON the “AOC-20i link OK” message needs much longer than normal. If you go into the AOC-20i settings via “Option button” before the “AOC link OK” message appears, the GC displays “Dual AOC20i+s Main” which is of course wrong. This is corrected as soon as the link is established. After “AOC-20i link OK” message, go out and then back to the AOC-20i settings. The headline of the screen has changed to “Dual AOC-20i Main”
4.1 Trouble shooting:
Default of F97=000. F97 is included in “hard” reset of AOC-20i firmware 3.0 or
higher. It might be not affected by “hard” reset in case of Firmware 2.1 or lower. Please check!
For any AOC-20i configuration:
If the first run of a sequence is done properly but then the AOC-20i stops working most likely on the GC the parameter “Number of Injections” is not set to one. Unfortunately this parameter is not downloaded by most software packages. If it is changed on the GC it is not overwritten by software download. Using software control of the GC this parameter must be one in the Main and Sub Tower settings!

5.3 Software configuration AOC-20i Dual Tower with AOC-20s – example LabSolution GC
Please notice: Both Towers must have F97=0. If any of the used towers has set F97=1 no error message will
be shown but the Dual Tower configuration will not work properly.

5.4 Software configuration AOC-20i Dual Tower without AOC-20s – example LabSolution GC
In LabSolution the auto configuration does not configure the AOC-20i. Those must be configured manually. Add AOC-20d (M) and (S) – Dual Main and Sub - to Analytical Line 1 and 2 respectively (see Fig.11).
In AOC-20d(M) the checkbox use AOC-20s must be unchecked (default it is checked). This checkbox is used only software internally - it does not set F97 on the AOC-20i.

AOC-20i Dual Tower without AOC-20s allows additionally individual “Rack Types” for both Towers. So the Main Tower (front) could be operated with long rack (Fig. 13) and the Sub Tower (rear) with short rack (Fig. 14).

6.1 Appendix
6.2 Racks for AOC-20i Dual Tower with AOC-20s
On principle the standard rack for AOC-20i+s is needed two times but for Sub tower it must be assembled differently.

6.3 Racks for AOC-20i Dual Tower without AOC-20s
This configuration allows different rack assembling for Main and Sub Tower. Any from the following choices can be used individually.
6.3.1 Six sample standard rack - delivered with any AOC-20i

6.3.2. Twelve sample rack (P/N 221-45622-91)

6.3.3 Twelve sample rack modified for three solvent wash
With time the micro syringe plunger movement becomes harsh due to contamination inside the syringe. Washing the syringe several times with solvents of different polarity makes it smooth again. This regular maintenance of micro syringes can be extended using the three solvent wash with solvents of different polarity.

Please notice:
After installation of the three solvent wash option the AOC-20i cannot reach the 1.5ml vial position twelve anymore. Means maximum vial number is eleven.
If you operate this rack and address vial number 12 in GCsolution single or batch run the AOC-20i would not display an error massage but would inject sample from vial eleven (checked with AOC-20i Firmware 2.1)!
To operate this rack with three solvent vials correctly on AOC-20i the Function 28 must be set to 1 (default is 0).
This can be done in GCsolution Method parameters for AOC-20i:

Additionally the number of rinses must be adjusted. The wash stations are named A,B,C. Same as shown in figure 8. Thus wash station A is at the right end of the rack in figure 3.

If the # of Rinses with solvent is set to 1 only solvent A would be used. In case of “# of Rinses =2” solvent A and B is used. With setting 3 all solvents A,B,C are used to clean the syringe (same for # rinses pre run).
If # of rinses is set to 4 the syringe rinse procedure would be A,B,C,A.

6.3.4 Fifteen sample rack
If one wash position is sufficient the twelve sample rack can be extended for fifteen samples:

Please notice:
Despite that it has 18 positions for 1.5ml vials the AOC-20i can reach only 15!
This rack solution works with GCsolution V 2.21or higher, LabSolution, and AOC-20i ROM version 2.1 or higher.
