PREVENTING PROBLEMS WITH FREE STOP
OF THE ADF HINGE
1.Model Name: SF-A15
2.General: There is some variation in the measurements for the ADF hinge casing in the above
models. As a result, casing friction may drop during operation, so that the unit can no
longer support the ADF unit and does not free stop properly. The following measures
should be taken to prevent this problem.
3.Description: 1. As of September, 1996 production, a new casing measurement control device will be
used.
2. For units already on the market, please proceed as detailed below.
1) If you note weakening of ADF support during periodic inspection, follow procedures A
and / or B below.
A. Spread screw loosening fluid on the hinge cam. Spread only the amount indicated
in the attached procedural notes. Make sure not to apply too much screw loosening
fluid. If you apply too much, it may cause subsequent ADF problems during operation.
B. If performing procedure A, as described above, does not solve the problem, replace
the hinge unit (hinge ASS’Y).
2) If there is no problem at all with free stop of the ADF, continue using the unit as is.
DO NOT apply any screw loosening fluid. If you apply screw loosening fluid to a
trouble-free unit, it may cause malfunctions.
Screw loosening fluid is available overseas, so it is not being made available as a
service part.

The hinge unit part code has not changed, but all the hinge units now in stock are new,
replacement parts. (The newer hinge units are marked on the back with a black dot.)
4.Action: From the first unit of September, 1996 production.
Applying Screw Loosening Fluid to the Hinge Cam
(Procedure, Steps 1 to 4)
Step 1 Open the ADF all the way.
Step 2 Apply a match width’s worth of screw loosening fluid along 5 mm of the back
side of the hinge cam (about 25 mg of fluid).
Step 3 Use a spatula or similar device to spread the fluid out along all of the cam
except 5 mm at either end. In other words, do not spread the fluid on the 5 mm
closest to each end.
Step 4 In order to apply the screw loosening fluid to the entire cam evenly, open and
close the ADF 10 times.
* There is usually grease on the cam. Simply apply the screw loosening fluid over it
