9. Network Setup
9.1 Network DVR Setup
Before using your DVR on a network, there are three things that must be identified about the type of connection you are using.
Item 1 – Do you have a Static or Dynamic IP address from your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? A Static IP address does not change, it is provided by your ISP for a minimal extra charge. Item 2 – Are you installing the DVR on a LAN connection (behind a router) or on a WAN (Internet) connection (direct to modem)? Item 3 – Is your internet service Cable or DSL?
Glossary of terms:
LAN – Local Area Network WAN – Wide Area Network (Internet) ISP – Internet Service Provider DDNS – Dynamic Domain Name Service DSL – Digital Subscriber Line DHCP – Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol PPPoE – Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet
9.1.1 Connecting to a router (LAN)
1. Connect the DVR to the router or a hub on the LAN with a standard Ethernet cable.
2. Run IpEditV3.exe (file found on included CD in “Software” folder) on another PC on the
same LAN, and click on the listed item it finds.
Page 36
35
Connecting to a router (LAN)
3. Your DVR’s IP address will be displayed as shown in the above screen capture. This number should look something like 192.168.x.x. This is a LAN address assigned by your router’s DHCP server. This is number you will use to access the DVR from any PC located on the same LAN as it.
4. To allow other PCs not on the same LAN to access the DVR, you must configure your router to allow traffic from the WAN (Internet) to reach the DVR's internal address. How this is done depends on the type of router being used. Some common methods are referred to as DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), port forwarding, and Network Address Translation. Refer to your routers documentation on how to expose a server operating behind the router to the Internet. For additional help, refer to section 9.1.4 on enabling WAN access through a router (DMZ, etc…).
Using whatever method is made available by your router, map the external WAN IP
5.
address of the router to the internal LAN IP address of the DVR. This will cause incoming web request traffic to be routed directly to the DVR on your LAN.
6. Make a note of the WAN IP address of your router. This is the IP address you will use to access the DVR from a PC not on the same LAN as the DVR (from the internet).
7. If you are using a static IP address (one that never changes) leased from your ISP then you are finished with the setup. If you are using a Dynamic IP address (most common type) from your ISP, proceed to section 9.4.4 on configuring dynamic DNS service.
8. Once a valid IP address has been established, proceed to section 9.2 “Online Connection” to learn about logging into the DVR’s web server.
9.1.2 Connecting to a Cable or DSL modem (WAN)
Page 37
36
I. If you have a Static IP address from your ISP: (To complete this setup you will need a PC, and an Ethernet crossover cable OR two Ethernet straight cables and an Ethernet hub device.)
1. Connect the DVR to a PC using a cat-5 crossover cable or two cat-5 straight cables and an Ethernet hub.
2. Using the IpEditV3.exe program (found on the included CD in the “Software” folder), obtain the IP address of the DVR. The default IP address should be 169.254.1.13.
Connecting to a Cable or DSL modem (WAN)
3. Determine the IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway for your PC. If you do not know how to find your PC's IP address information, refer to section 9.1.3 “Determining the IP address of your PC”.
4. Manually configure the IP address of the DVR so that the first 3 sets of numbers in the IP address are the same as your PC’s IP address, make the 4th set of number(s) different. Enter the Subnet Mask and Gateway information from your PC and click “Submit”.
5. Connect to the DVR by entering the IP address into the URL bar in Internet Explorer, or by double clicking on the camera name in the list. See section 9.2 “Online Connection” before proceeding to step 6.
6. Access the DVR configuration page by clicking “configure” and select the “Network” menu.
7. Check the option button labeled “Manually” and enter the IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway into the DVR using the information provided to you by your ISP when
Page 38
37
you purchased a static IP address.
8. Make note of this IP address. It is the IP address you will use to connect to the DVR from other PC's over the WAN.
9. If you have cable internet service or your ISP does not require a login and password you are finished. If you have DSL internet service and your ISP requires a login and password for PPPoE connection, please proceed to section 9.4.3.3 on configuring PPPoE on the DVR.
If you have a

connection, please proceed to section 9.4.3.3 on configuring PPPoE on the DVR.
Once the DVR has been properly configured, disconnect the PC from the hub and
9.
connect the modem to the hub (or connect the modem directly to the DVR). This will allow your ISP’s DHCP server to now assign an IP address to your DVR. This may take a few moments to complete.
To verify that the DNS client is working, move to another PC that has access to the
9.
internet (you will not be able to access the internet through the hub while the DVR is connected to it). Enter the domain name for your DVR (ex. www.myDVR.com) in the URL bar of Internet Explorer.
9.1.3 Determining the IP address of your PC
Open an “MS-DOS” command window by:
1. Go to Start => Run => and type "command"
2. At the “DOS” prompt type "IPCONFIG" and press enter. (on windows 98 machines, type "WINIPCFG" instead) The IP address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway of your PC should be displayed.
9.1.4 DMZ, Port Forward, other methods for exposing a server behind a router.
A router has two IP addresses: a WAN IP address that computers outside of its LAN
use to talk to it, and a LAN IP address that computers inside of it’s LAN use to talk to it. In order for a computer outside of the routers LAN to be able to talk to a computer inside the routers LAN (like the DVR), the router must be configured to translate the WAN address of the router to the LAN address of the DVR. This is done in different ways by different router manufacturers. The two most common way are DMZ and port forwarding.
– A demilitarized zone typically represents a single address on the LAN that is
DMZ
exposed to any and all traffic directed to/from the WAN address of the router on any port. Typically only the LAN and WAN IP addresses are needed to configure the DMZ.
Port Forward
– Some routers use a feature called “port forwarding” to allow certain request traffic on the WAN to reach a computer on the LAN. In this configuration, traffic directed to a specific port on the routers WAN sid e is redirected to a single LAN address.
Page 40
39
Since the DVR uses port 80 as default, you would want to configure the router to forward port 80 to the LAN address of the DVR. Typically, only the LAN address of the DVR and the port on which it communicates need be known to configure this feature.
9.2 Online Connection
Start Internet Explorer, enter the IP Address of your DVR into the Address field (such as 192.168.1.31) or click twice on the camera name in the camera list in IpEditV3.exe. You will be prompted to supply a user name and password before being connected.
