  • 3. Lock knob should tighten with lever pointing straight up. To change angle at which lever locks, remove nut from knob and rotate nut one hex to right or left as needed. Retighten lock knob, repeat above until knob lever points straight up.
  • 4. If you are going to use a grinder mounted to a bench, proceed to step five. To use the grinder attachment with a pedestal mounted grinder you will need a plywood board between the grinder and pedestal for mounting the grinder attachment. (see sketch at right)

The PLYWOOD will serve as the work bench in step 5

  • 5 Loosen lock knob and pull attachment to end of pedestal slot. With carriage parallel to pedestal retighten lock knob. Hold grinder attachment on right-front corner of Work Bench and mark the location of slots in pedestal on work bench. Predrill two 1/8" holes and secure pedestal to work bench using two #10 x 1" wood screws and washers.
  • 6. Locate grinder on bench with right wheel in line with Travel Knob of attachment With tool clamp 1/4" from wheel secure grinder to bench as instructed in grinder instruction sheet. Be sure carriage is parallel to bench when setting the 1/4" dimension. Loosen #10 wood screws and position attachment parallel to front of grinder and retighten #10 wood screws.
  • 7 CARRIAGE ASSEMBLY can be located and locked at any angle from top of wheel down to center line of wheel, by unlocking knob and moving unit in slot, of pedestal.
  • 8. Before sharpening a tool we recommend you dress the wheel parallel to tool holder. This is accomplished by clamping a DRESSING STICK (as shown) between TOOL CLAMP and CARRIAGE. Secure with THUMB NUTS. Back off FINE FEED SCREW (counter clock-wise). Bring carriage assembly in relation to grinder so dressing stick is close to wheel. Move dresser off wheel to the side using TRAVEL KNOR

STRAIGHT GRINDING SLIGHTLY BELOW CENTER

  • 9. Move dresser across wheel continuously and briskly. Turn feed screw in slightly (1/16" on outside diameter) and move dresser across wheel. (Do not allow dresser to dwell on the wheel.) Repeat until wheel face is straight and clean. One sixteenth (1/16") of an inch on outside diameter of fine feed screw will feed tool in (.005) five thousandths. (Feed .003 to .005 per cut for best results.)
  • 10. You are now ready to sharpen a tool. Place the tool to be sharpened under tool clamp. Secure in place with thumb nuts. The tool should extend over the carriage as little as possible for rigidity.

Your tool holder grinding attachment tool clamp can be turned over to hold a variety of tools in angle slots.

  • 11. Loosen lock knob and locate tool on wheel at (be sure grinder motor is not running) angle to be sharpened. This angle is determined by maintaining angle already on tool. You may have to loosen thumb nuts and push tool against wheel with your thumb to square up tool to wheel, then retighten thumb nuts. Stand away from front of grinder during first minute after starting GRINDING WHEEL . Then move the work freely across the wheel, removing a slight amount of material at a time (.003 to .005 per cut).
  • 12. Smoking the cutting edge with a match or blueing before sharpening is helpful to see where you are grinding. A mirror is helpful to see the under side of tool without removing tool from clamp.
HELPFUL HINTS

13. To avoid softening the steel by over heating, remove only a slight amount of material per grind. Keep tool moving when grinding. Feed tool in when tool is off to side of wheel. (Take small cuts, feed .003 to .005 for best results.)

HOLLOW GRINDING AT TOP OF WHEEL

EASY DOES IT

One sixteenth (1/16") of an inch on outside diameter of fine feed screw will feed tool in (.005) five thousandth.

14. Hollow grinding is done on the face of the wheel. The length of the grind is regulated by the position of the tool on the wheel.
