Double insulation is a concept in safety, in electric power tools, which eliminates the need for the usual three wire grounded power cord and grounded supply system. Wherever there is electric current in the tool there are two complete sets of insulation to protect the user. All exposed metal parts are isolated from the internal metal motor components with protecting insulation.
Servicing of a tool with double insulation requires extreme care and knowledge of the system and should be performed only by a qualified service technician. For service we suggest you return the tool to your nearest Sears Store for repair. Always use original factory replacement parts when servicing.
WARNING: When using Electric Tools, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury, including the following:
CAUTION: When drilling into walls, floors or wherever "live" electrical wires may be encountered, DO NOT TOUCH THE CHUCK OR ANY FRONT METAL PARTS OF THE DRILL! Hold the Drill only by the plastic handle to prevent electric shock if you drill into a "live" wire.
Be sure your power supply agrees with the nameplate marking. AC ONLY means that this drill must be operated with alternating current only and never with direct current. This drill is designed to operate with 120 volts as 60 HZ. Voltage decrease of more than 10% will cause loss of power and overheating. This drill produces full power in reverse as well as forward.
To start Drill, depress trigger switch; to stop Drill, release trigger. To lock trigger in "ON" position for continuous operation, depress trigger and push up locking button "A" Figure 1, then gently release trigger. To release locking mechanism, depress trigger fully, then release it. Before using the tool (each time) be sure that the lock button release mechanism is working freely.
Do not lock the switch "ON" when drilling by hand so that you can instantly release the trigger switch if the bit binds in the hole.
Be sure to release the switch locking button before disconnecting the plug from the power supply. Failure to do so will cause the tool to start immediately the next time it is plugged in. Damage or injury could result.
The Variable Speed Trigger Switch permits speed control—the farther the trigger is depressed, the higher the speed of the Drill. NOTE: Use lower speeds for starting holes without a center punch, drilling in metal or plastics, driving screws, drilling ceramics, or mixing paint. Higher speeds are better for drilling wood and composition boards, and for using abrasive and polishing accessories.
The Reversing Switch is used for withdrawing bits from tight holes and removing screws at lower speeds. It is located above the trigger switch (Fig. 2). To reverse the motor, release the trigger FIRST and then push the reversing switch lever to the right. After any reversing operations, return the reversing lever back to the forward position.
This handle is supplied with all 1/2" Drills and some %" Drills. It clamps to the front of the gear case and can be rotated to permit right-hand or left-hand use.
CAUTION: Always use side handle and hold Drill with both hands when using 1/2" Drill.
Insert drill bit into chuck and tighten securely using the chuck key provided. DO NOT USE A WRENCH TO TIGHTEN OR LOOSEN THE CHUCK.
Depress and release the switch trigger to be sure the tool is in the "off" position before connecting it to the power supply.
Check for correct (forward or reverse) direction setting before starting the drill. The lever must be moved to the left. (Fig. 2)
The material to be drilled should be held in a vise or with clamps to keep it from turning as the drill bit rotates. Hold the drill firmly and place the bit at the point to be drilled.
Do not lock the switch "on" for jobs where the drill may need to be stopped suddenly.
Move the drill bit into the workpiece applying only enough pressure to keep the bit cutting. Do not force the drill so that motor speed is reduced drastically or apply side pressure to elongate a hole.
When drilling metals use a light oil on the drill bit to keep it from overheating. The oil will prolong the life of the bit and increase the drilling action.
If the bit jams in workpiece or if the drill stalls, stop the tool immediately. Remove the bit from the workpiece and determine the reason for jamming.
For Drills with Reversing feature, start with step 1.
For Drills, without Reversing feature.skip steps 1 & 2 and start with step 3.
1. Place chuck key in chuck as shown in Figure 4. Using a wooden mallet or similar object, strike key sharply in a CLOCKWISE direction. This will loosen screw inside chuck (Figure 4).
2. Open chuck jaws fully. Insert screwdriver into front of chuck between jaws to engage screw head. Remove screw by turning clockwise (left-hand thread).
3. Place key in chuck as shown in Figure 5. Using a wooden mallet or similar object, strike key sharply in a COUNTER-CLOCKWISE direction (Figure 5.) This will loosen chuck so that it can be unscrewed by hand.
Only the parts shown on parts list, page seven, are intended to be repaired or replaced by the customer. All other parts represent an important part of the double insulation system and should be serviced only by a qualified service technician.
Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most plastics are susceptible to various types of commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, carbon dust, etc.
When electric tools are used on fiberglass boats, sports cars, etc., it has been found that they are subject to accelerated wear and possible premature failure, as the fiberglass chips and grindings are highly abrasive to bearings, brushes, commutator, etc. Consequently it is not recommended that this tool be used for continuous production work on any fiberglass material. During any use on fiberglass it is extremely important that the tool is cleaned frequently by blowing with an air jet.
The use of any extension cord will cause some loss of power. To keep the loss to a minimum and to prevent tool overheating, use minimum 16 A.W.G. wire size for extension cord lengths from 25 to 75 feet and minimum 14
A.W.G. wire size for extension cord lengths from 75 to 100 feet. When tool is used outdoors, use only extension cords suitable for outdoor use and so marked. Extension cords are available at Sears Catalog Order or Retail Store.
