INTRODUCTION

This CRAFTSMAN Die Grinder is highly rated for blending and smoothing weld, casting clean-up, burr removal and general purpose grinding operations.

This Die Grinder features a compact, light weight design (1 1/4 lb. (.06 kg) and a rear exhaust which directs air away from the work area. A rugged air motor provides over 1/2 H. P. of vibration free performance at 22,000 RPM, a built-in speed regulator gives maximum control and a range of RPM selection to adapt various applications and metal removal. Full ball bearing construction and steel end plates assure long die grinder life and keep repair costs at a minimum. A self closing throttle is standard which shuts off the Die Grinder when throttle lever is released.

AIR SUPPLY

An air supply to operate this Die Grinder at its full efficiency must use an air compressor capable of delivering 10 SCFM at 90 PSI. The recommended air tank must have a capacity of at least 30 gallons. Minimum air hose size must be 5/16" I.D. (10mm).

An air hose hookup similar to that shown below is recommended.

Page 3
PREPARING FOR OPERATION

1. Blow out air line and drain any water from air supply.

2. Pour approximately one (1) teaspoon of Allstate Upper Valve Lube or CRAFTSMAN Light Machine Oil 9-55441 into air inlet end of motor housing (Key No. 9). This procedure is recommended to flush any harmful deposits out of Die Grinder and to keep internal parts well lubricated.

LUBRICATION

Use Allstate Upper Valve Lube or CRAFTSMAN Light Machine Oil 9-55941. The use of an air line fogger. Sears 30-16017, installed in the air supply leading to this Die Grinder is recommended to assure a constant, adequate supply of lubricant. See Typical Air Hose and Coupling Assembly.

At each inspection period clean ball bearing (Key No. 10) and repack 25% of the open space within ball bearing with Sears Moly EP Lithium Grease 28A59071. All lubricants are available at Sears Retail and Catalog stores.

SAFETY CAUTIONS

WARNING

The operation of Power Tools can result in serious eve damage if proper precautions are not followed.

Always wear safety glasses or eye shields before commencing Power Tool operation. Wide Vision Safety Masks for use over spectacles or standard safety glasses are available at Sears Retail and Catalog stores.

Avoid inhaling dust from grinding operation by using an approved type dust mask or a dust exhaust system.

In addition to eve protection observation of the following safety procedures is highly recommended:

1. Daily before using, with no mandrel in Die Grinder, check spindle speed with a tachometer. If overspeeding is noted check for excessive air pressure.

To check air pressure install a gauge tee with air gauge between whip hose and live air hose as shown in illustration.

Page 4

2. Use grinding accessories that are in good condition and rated at or over the actual spindle speed.

3. When using mounted points make sure mandrel is fully seated and secured in the collet chuck. For maximum mandrel overhang see American National Safety Code B7.1

ERRATIC ACTION / LOSS OF POWER

If during operation a loss of power or erratic action takes place check the following: 1. Air pressure - for rated performance 90 PSI air pressure is required at the tool with tool operating. To check air pressure see diagram below.

2. Check compressor output - lowered compressor output will cause loss of power at the tool.

3. Excessive number of tools operating off a single air line - disconnect tools overloading line.

4. Hose or connections of improper size or in poor condition - see "Typical Air Hose and Coupling Assembly".

5. Wet or dirty air - dirt/foreign matter in air supply will impede action of the Die Grinder. Flush Die Grinder with an equal mixture of Sears Upper Valve Lube and kerosene.

If the above steps fail to restore the full efficiency of the Die Grinder proceed as follows:

1. Unscrew and remove housing cap (Key No. 23) and clamp nut (Key No. 24) from motor housing (Key No. 9).

2. Pull air motor assembly from motor housing.

3. Using a suitable V-plate press rear end plate (Key No. 11) off rotor (Key No. 14).

4. Remove four rotor blades (Key No. 15). Inspect rotor blades carefully for wear, chipping or separating. If any of these conditions are noted replace with new lightly oiled rotor blades.

5. Assembly is essentially a reverse of the above described disassembly. See Parts Diagram.

NOTE: Care must be taken to clean all parts of foreign particles before assembly. 6. If above steps do not restore Die Grinder to full efficiency, return Die Grinder to your nearest Sears Store.
