INTRODUCTION

DOUBLE INSULATION

Double insulation is a concept in safety, in electric power tools, which eliminates the need for the usual three wire grounded power cord and grounded supply system. Wherever there is electric current in the tool there are two complete sets of insulation to protect the user. All exposed metal parts are isolated from the internal metal motor components with protecting insulation.

IMPORTANT-Servicing of a tool with double insulation requires extreme care and knowledge of the system and should be performed only by a qualified service technician. For service we suggest you return the tool to your nearest Sears Store for repair. Always use original factory replacement parts when servicina.

RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION

  • 1. KNOW YOUR POWER TOOL Read owner's manual carefully. Learn its applications and limitations as well as the specific potential hazards peculiar to this too
  • 2. GROUND ALL TOOLS UNLESS DOUBLE-INSULATED. If tool is equipped with three-prong plug, it should be plugged into a three-hole electrical receptacle. If adapter is used to accommodate two-prong receptacle, the adapter wire must be attached to a known ground. (Usually the screw securing receptacle cover plate). Never remove third prong.
  • KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and in working order. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents.
  • 5. AVOID DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT. Don't use power tool in damp or wet locations or expose to rain. Keep work area well lit.
  • 6. KEEP CHILDREN AWAY. All visitors should be kept safe distance from work area.
  • 7. STORE IDLE TOOLS. When not in use, tools should be stored in dry, high or locked-up place-out of reach of childr
  • 8. DON'T FORCE TOOL. It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
  • 9. USE RIGHT TOOL. Don't force small tool or attachment to do the job of a heavy duty tool.
  • 10. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. No loose clothing or jewelry to get caught in moving parts. Rubber gloves and footwear are recommended when working outdoors.
  • 11. USE SAFETY GLASSES with most tools. Also face or dust mask if cutting operation is dusty.
  • 12. DON'T ABUSE CORD. Never carry tool by cord or yank it to disconnect from receptacle. Keep cord from heat, oil and sharp edges.
  • 13. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise to hold work. It's safer than using your hand and it frees both hands to operate tool.
  • 14 DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
  • 15. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp at all times, and clean for best and safest performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
  • 16. DISCONNECT TOOLS. When not in use, before servicing; when changing attachments, blades, bits,
  • 17. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from tool before turning it on.
  • 18. AVOID ACCIDENTAL STARTING. Don't carry plugged-in tools with finger on switch. Be sure switch is off when plugging in. 19. OUTDOOR USE EXTENSION CORDS. When tool is used outdoors, use only extension cords suitable
  • for use outdoors and so marked.
  • 20 DRILLING INTO ELECTRICAL WIRING IN WALLS CAN CAUSE DRILL BIT AND CHUCK TO BECOME LIVE. Do not touch the chuck when drilling into a wall; grasp only the handle(s) provided on the tool.

SWITCH

The switch of your drill is equipped with a "lock-on" feature which is convenient for drilling in soft woods or when using the tool with a drill stand. To lock on, simply depress the trigger of the switch and engage the lock button located on the side of the handle.

To release the lock, depress the trigger and release it. Be sure the tool is not in the "lock-on" position before connecting to power supply source.

The drill also has the feature of being reversible. The direction of rotation is controlled by a toggle switch located on the right side of the pistol grip handle. Push it forward for normal drilling action and backward for reverse rotation. Do not change the direction while the drill is running. Release the switch trigger and allow the drill to stop before changing its direction.

OPERATION

Disconnect tool from power supply.

Insert drill bit into the chuck the full length of the jaws. Use the chuck key provided to tighten securely. Do not use a wrench to tighten or loosen the chuck.

Depress and release the switch trigger to be sure the tool is in the "off" position before connecting it to the power supply.

When drilling hard smooth surfaces use a center punch to mark desired hole location. This will prevent the drill bit from slipping off center as the hole is started.

The material to be drilled should be secured in a vise or with clamps to keep it from turning as the drill bit rotates.

Hold the drill firmly and place the bit at the point to be drilled. Depress the switch trigger to start the drill. Do not lock the trigger on jobs where the drill may need to be stopped suddenly.

Move the drill bit into the workpiece applying only enough pressure to keep the bit cutting. Do not force the drill or apply side pressure to elongate a hole.

When drilling metals use a light oil on the drill bit to keep it from overheating. The oil will prolong the life of the bit and increase the drilling action.

If the bit jams in workpiece or if the drill stalls, stop the tool immediately. Remove the bit from the workpiece and determine the reason for jamming.

CHUCK REMOVAL

Disconnect the drill from power supply before any service operation.

The chuck must be removed in order to use some accessories. To remove:

  • 1. Close the chuck jaws. Insert chuck key into chuck and tap sharply with a mallet in a clockwise direction as shown in Fig. 1.
  • 2. Open the chuck jaws and remove the chuck screw by turning it in clockwise direction. See Fig. 2.
  • Insert the chuck key in chuck and tap sharply in counterclockwise direction to loosen it on spindle. It can now be unscrewed by hand. See Fig. 3.

The chuck may become loose on spindle and develop a wobble. To tighten it, follow these steps:

  • 1. Open the chuck jaws.
  • 2. Insert chuck key in chuck and tap with a mallet in clockwise direction.
  • 3. Tighten the chuck screw.

WHEN SERVICING USE ONLY IDENTICAL REPLACEMENT PARTS.

SWITCH REPLACEMENT

  • 1. Remove handle as described above.
  • 2. Disconnect supply cord and motor leads from switch. Note locations of all leads in the switch. Connections must be identical when installing the new switch.
  • 3. Connect all leads to the switch and position switch in handle cover. A nest has been molded into the handle cover to hold the switch in place.
  • 4. Arrange the wiring so that it will not be pinched when handle is replaced.
  • 5. Place bend relief and cord in their correct positions.
  • 6. Replace handle and tighten all screws securely.
BRUSH REPLACEMENT

Disconnect the drill from power supply before servicing.

  • Remove brush caps (A) with screwdriver. See Fig. 4.
  • 2. Remove fibre washers (B). The washers are designed to fit tightly in the brush holders to prevent twisting of brush springs when replacing brush caps.
  • 3. Remove brushes (C).
  • 4. Reassemble brush with spring into tool making sure that the curvature of the brush matches curvature of the motor and that the brush moves freely in the brush holder.
  • 5. Replace fibre washers and brush caps.

CORD REPLACEMENT
Disconnect tool from power supply.

  • Remove the five screws holding handle (Key No. 47 on parts list) in place and carefully remove handle from drill.
  • 2. Release the black and white supply cord leads from the switch by inserting a 1/32" diameter pin or nail into each switch lead receptacle. See Figure 5. Note the locations of the leads so that the new cord will be connected correctly.
  • 3. Remove the bend relief (Key No. 41 on parts list) from old supply cord and place it on the new one.
  • 4. Push each lead of the new cord into its proper lead receptacle as far as possible.
  • 5. Locate switch in handle cover and, before replacing handle, make sure all leads are clear of screw bosses and other pinch points, and that the bend relief and supply cord are positioned correctly. A slot is provided in the strengthening rib of the handle cover for supply cord leads.
LUBRICATION

All the bearings in this tool are lubricated with a sufficient amount of high grade lubricant for the life of the unit under normal operating conditions, therefore, no further lubrication is required.

GENERAL

Only the parts shown outside Section A on page six are intended to be replaced by the customer. Parts listed in Section A represent an important part of the double insulation system and should be serviced only by a qualified service technician.

Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most plastics are susceptible to various types of commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, carbon dust, etc.

EXTENSION CORDS

The use of any extension cord will cause some loss of power. To keep the loss to a minimum and to prevent tool overheating, follow the recommended cord sizes on the chart at right. When tool is used outdoors, use only extension cords suitable for outdoor use and so marked. Extension cords are available at Sears Catalog Order or Retail Stores.

When electric tools are used on fiberglass boats, sports cars, etc., it has been found that they are subject to accelerated wear and possible premature failure, as the fiberglass chips and grindings are highly abrasive to bearings, brushes, commutator, etc. Consequently it is not recommended that this tool be used for continuous production work on any fiberglass material. During any use on fiberglass it is extremely important that the tool is cleaned frequently by blowing with an air jet.
