1.0 Introduction

This manual describes the functional, mechanical and interface specifications for the following Seagate Momentus® 5400.4 SATA model drives:
• ST9250827AS
• ST9200827AS
• ST9160827AS
• ST9120817AS These drives provide the following key features:
• 5,400-RPM spindle speed.
• 8-Mbyte buffer.
• Quiet operation. Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motor.
• High instantaneous (burst) data-transfer rates (up to 150 Mbytes per second).
• Perpendicular recording technology provides the drives with increased areal density.
• State-of-the-art cache and on-the-fly error-correction algorithms.
• Full-track multiple-sector transfer capability without local processor intervention.
• 900 Gs nonoperating shock and 325 Gs of operating shock.
• SeaTools diagnostic software performs a drive self-test that eliminates unnecessary drive returns.
• The 3D Defense System™, w hich in clu des Drive Defense , D at a Defen se and D iagnost ic Defense, offers the industry’s most comprehensive protection for disc drives.
• Support for S.M.A.R.T. drive monitoring and reporting.

1.1 About the Serial ATA interface

The Serial ATA interface provides several advantages over the traditional (parallel) ATA interface. The primary advantages include:
• Easy installation and configuration with true plug-and-play connectivity. It is not normally necessary to set any jumpers or other configuration options.
• Thinner and more flexible cabling for improved enclosure airflow and ease of installation.
• Scalability to higher performance levels.
In addition, Serial ATA makes the transiti o n from pa rallel ATA easy by providi ng legacy sof twar e suppo rt. S erial ATA was designed to allow you to install a Serial ATA host adapter and Serial ATA disc drive in your current system and expect all of your existing applications to work as normal.
The Serial ATA interface connects each disc drive in a point-to-point configuration with the Serial ATA host adapter. There is no master/slave relationship with Serial ATA devices like there is with parallel ATA. If two drives are attached on one Serial ATA host adapter, the host operating system views the two devices as if they were both “masters” on two separate ports. This essentially means both drives behave as if they are Device 0 (master) devices.
Note. The host adapter may, optionally, emulate a master/slave environment to host software where two
devices on separate Serial ATA ports are represented to host software as a Device 0 (master) and Device 1 (slave) accessed at the same set of host bus addresses. A host adapter that emulates a master/slave environment manages two sets of shadow registers. This is not a typical Serial ATA environment.
The Serial ATA host adapter and drive share the function of emulating parallel ATA device behavior to provide backward compatibility with existing host systems and software. The Command and Control Block registers, PIO and DMA data transfers, resets, and interrupts are all emulated.
The Serial ATA host adapter cont ai ns a set of registe rs that sha dow the conte nt s of the trad iti onal device r egis­ters, referred to as the Shadow Register Block. All Serial ATA devices behave like Device 0 devices. For addi­tional information about how Serial ATA emulates parallel ATA, refer to the “Serial ATA: High Speed Serialized AT Attachment” specification. 2.2.1 LBA mode

When addressing these drives in LBA mode, all blocks (sectors) are consecutively numbered from 0 to n–1, where n is the number of guaranteed sectors as defined above.
See Section 4.3.1, "Identify Device command" (words 60-61 and 100-103) for additional information about 48­bit addressing support of drives with capacities over 137 Gbytes.

2.7 Seek time

Seek measurem ent s a re t ake n wi th nom inal po w er a t 25 °C amb ient temperature. All tim es a re m easu red using drive diagnostics. The specifications in the table below are defined as follows:
• Track-to-track seek time is an average of all possible single-track seeks in both directions.
• Average seek time is a true statistical random average of at least 5,000 measurements of seeks between random tracks, less overhead.

2.9 Power specifications

The drive receives DC power (+5V) through a native SATA power connector.

2.9.1 Power consumption

Power requiremen ts for the dr iv es are listed i n the ta ble on p age 8. Typical power measurements are based on an average of drives tested, under nominal conditions, at 25°C ambient temperature.
• Spinup power
Spinup power is measured from the time of power-on to the time that the drive spindle re aches operating speed.
• Seek mode
During seek mod e, the read /write actuator arm move s toward a spe cific positi on on the d isc surface and does not execute a read or write operati on. Servo ele ctronics ar e acti ve. Seek mode power is mea sure d based on three random seek operations every 100 msecs. This mode is not typical.
Read/write power and current Read/write power is measured with the heads on track, based on three 63 sector read or write operations
every 100 msecs.
• Idle mode power
Idle mode power is measured with the drive up to speed, with servo electronics active and with the heads in a random track location.
• Standby mode
During Standby mode, the drive accepts commands, but the drive is not spinning, and the servo and read/ write electronics are in power-down model

2.9.2 Deferred spinup

Momentus 5400.4 SATA drives do not suppor t the def erre d spi nup option. If you requir e this option , refer to the Momentus 5400.3 SATA Blade Server family of drives.

2.9.3 Conducted noise

Input noise ripple is measured at the host system power supply across an equivalent 15-ohm resistive load on the +5 volt line.
Using 5-volt power, the drive is expected to operate with a maximum of 100 mV peak-to-peak square-wave injected noise at up to 10 MHz.
Note. Equivalent resistance is calculated by dividing the nominal voltage by the typical RMS read/write
current.

2.9.4 Voltage tolerance

2.9.5 Power-manag ement mo des

The drive provides programmable power management to provide greater energy efficiency. In most systems, you can control power management through the system setup program. The drive features the following power-management modes:

• Active mode
The drive is in Active mode during the read/write and seek operations.
• Idle mode
The buffer remains enabled, and the drive accepts all commands and returns to Active mode any time disc access is necessary.
• Standby mode
The drive enters Standby mode when the host sends a Standby Immediat e c omma nd. If the ho st has set the standby timer, the drive can also enter Standby mode automatically after the drive has been inactive for a specifiable length of time. The standby tim er delay is established using a Standby or Idle command. In Sta ndby mode, the drive buffer is in Self Refresh Low Power mode, the heads are parked and the spindle is at rest. The drive accepts all commands and returns to Active mode any time disc access is necessary.
• Sleep mode

The drive leaves Sleep mode after it receives a Hard Reset or Soft Reset from the host. After receiving a reset, the drive exits Sleep mode and enters Standby mode with all current translation parameters intact.
• Idle and Standby timers
Each time the drive performs an Active function (read, write or seek), the standby timer is reinitialized and begins counting down from its specified delay times to zero. If the standby timer reaches zero before any drive activity is required, the drive makes a transition to Standby mode. In both Idle and Standby mode, the drive accepts all commands and returns to Active mode when disc access is necessary.

Seagate follows the ECMA-74 standards for measurement and identification of PDTs. An exception to this pro­cess is the use of the absolute threshold of hearing. Seagate uses the lower limit for the threshold curve* to discern tone audibility and to compensate for the inaudible components of sound prior to computation of tone ratios according to Annex D of the ECMA-74 standards.

2.15 Environmental protection

Seagate designs its products to meet environmental protection requirements worldwide, including regulations restricting certain chemica l subst ances .

2.15.1 European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)

The European U nion Restr icti on of Hazard ous S ubst ance s (RoHS ) Dire cti ve re strict s the p resen ce of ch emic al substances, including Lead (Pb), in electronic products effective July 2006.
A number of parts and materials in Seagate products are procured from external suppliers. We rely on the rep-resentat ions o f our sup pl iers reg ardi ng the pr esence of RoHS subst ances in these p arts and mate rials. Our supplier contracts require compliance with our chemical substance restrictions, and our suppliers document their compliance wi th our re quire ment s by providing material conte nt declar ations for al l par ts an d mater ial s for the disc drives documented in this publication. Current supplier declarations include disclosure of the inclusion of any RoHS-regulated substance in such parts or materials.
Seagate also has internal system s in place to en sure ongoing complian ce with the RoHS Directive and all laws and regulations which restrict chemical conte nt in electron ic produ cts. T hese system s include sta ndar d operat­ing procedures that ensure that restricted substances are not utilized in our manufacturing operations, labora­tory analytical validation testing, and an internal auditing process to ensure that all standard operating procedures are complied with.

2.16 Corrosive environment

Seagate electronic drive components pass accelerated corrosion testing equivalent to 10 years exposure to light industrial environments containing sulfurous gases, chlorine and nitric oxide, classes G and H per ASTM B845. However, this accelerated testing cannot duplicate every potential application environment.
Users should use caution exposing any electronic components to uncontrolled chemical pollutants and corro­sive chemicals as electr onic dr i ve com ponen t reliab ilit y can be af fecte d by th e i nst allation environment. Th e si l- ver, copper, nickel and gold films used in Seagate products are especially sensitive to the presence of sulfide, chloride, and nitr ate c ont ami na nt s. S ulfur is found to be the m ost dam aging . In ad di tion, e lectron i c comp onent s should never be exposed to condensing water on the surface of the printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) or exposed to an am bient rel at ive hum idity gr eate r th an 9 5%. Mat erial s used in cabin et fa bri cation , such as vulca­nized rubber, that can outgas corrosive compounds should be minimized or eliminated. The useful life of any electronic equipment may be extended by replacing materials near circuitry with sulfide-free alternatives.

3.0 Configuring and mounting the drive

This section contains the specifications and instructions for configuring and mounting the drive.

3.1 Handling and static-discharge precautions

After unpacking, and before installation, the drive may be exposed to potential handling and electrostatic dis­charge (ESD) hazards. Observe the following standard handling and static-discharge precautions:
Caution:
• Keep the drive in the electrostatic discharge (ESD) bag until you are ready for installation to limit the drive’s exposure to ESD.
• Before handling the drive, put on a grounded wrist strap, or ground yourself frequently by touching the metal chassis of a computer that is plugg ed into a grounded outlet. Wear a grounded wrist strap through out the entire installation procedure.
• Handle the drive only by its edges or frame.
• The drive is fragile—handle it with care. Do not press down on the drive top cover.
• Always rest the drive on a padded, antistatic surface until you mount it in the computer.
• Do not touch the connector pins or the printed circuit board.
• Do not remove the factory-installed labels from the drive or cover them with additional labels. Removal voids the warranty. Some factory-installed labels contain information needed to service the drive. Other labels are used to seal out dirt and contamination.

3.2 Configuring the drive

Each drive on the Serial ATA interface connects in a point-to-point configuration with the Serial ATA host adapter. There is no master/slave relationship because each drive is considered a master in a point-to-point relationships. If two drives are attached on one Serial ATA host adapter, the host operating system views the two devices as if they were both “masters” on two sep a rate ports. This means both drives b ehave as if they are Device 0 (master) devices.
Serial ATA drives are designed for easy installation. It is normally not necessary to set any jumpers on this drive for proper operation . If the ho st system does not support SATA 3Gb/s operation, pl ace a jum per o n pins 1 and 2 to limit the drive to 1.5Gb/s.

3.3 Serial ATA cables and connectors

The Serial ATA interface cable consists of four conductors in two differential pairs, plus three ground connec­tions. The cable size may be 30 to 26 AWG with a maximum length of one meter (39.37 inches). See Table 7 for connector pin definitions. Either end of the SATA signal cable can be attached to the drive or host.
For direct backplane connection, the drive connectors are inserted directly into the host receptacle. The drive and the host receptacle incorporate features that enable the direct connection to be hot pluggable and blind mateable.
For installations which require cables, you can connect the drive as illustrated in Figure 3.

3.4 Drive mounting

You can mount the drive using four screws in the side-mounting holes or four screws in the bottom-mounting holes. See Figure 4 for drive mo unti ng dim ensions. Fol low these i mpo rt ant mo unting pr ecauti o ns when mou nt­ing the drive:
• Allow a minimum clearance of 0.030 inches (0.76 mm) around the entire perimeter of the drive for cooling.
• Use only M3 UNC mounting screws.
• Do not overtighten the mounting screws (maximum torque: 4.0 inch-lb).
• Four (4) threads (0.080 inches) minimum screw engagement recommended.

4.0 Seria l ATA (SATA) in te rface

These drives use the industry-standard Serial ATA interface that supports FIS data transfers. It supports ATA programmed input/output (PIO) modes 0–4; multiword DMA modes 0–2, and Ultra DMA modes 0–6. The drive also supports the use of the IORDY signal to provide reliable high-speed data transfers.
For detailed information about the Serial ATA interface, refer to the “Serial ATA: High Speed Serialized AT Attachment” specification.

4.1 Hot-Plug compatibility

Momentus 5400.4 SATA drives incorporate connectors which enable you to hot plug these drives in accor­dance with the Serial ATA: High Speed Serialized AT Attachment specification revision 2.0. This specification can be downloaded from http://www.serialata.org. This device requires a COMRESET from the host after a hotplug event.

4.3.2 Set Features command

This command con trols the implement ation of var ious features that the dr iv e sup port s. When the drive receives this command, it sets BSY, checks the contents of the Features register, clears BSY and generates an inter­rupt. If the value in the register does not represent a feature that the drive supports, the command is aborted. Power-on default has the read look-ahead and write caching features enabled. The acceptable values for the Features register are defined as follows:

4.3.3 S.M.A.R.T. commands

S.M.A.R.T. provides near-term failure prediction for disc drives. When S.M.A.R.T. is enabled, the drive moni­tors predetermined drive attributes that are susceptible to degradation over time. If self-monitoring determines that a failure is likely, S.M.A.R.T. makes a status report available to the host. Not all failures are predictable. S.M.A.R.T. predictability is limited to the attributes the drive can monitor. For more information on S.M.A.R.T. commands and implementation, see the Draft ATA-5 Standard.
SeaTools diagnostic software activates a built-in drive self-test (DST S.M.A.R.T. command for D4H) that elimi­nates unnecessary drive returns. The diagnostic software ships with all new drives and is also available at: http://seatools.seagate.com.
This drive is ship ped wi th S. M.A.R. T. features disabled. You must have a recent BIOS or so ft ware pa ckage that supports S.M.A.R.T. to enable this feature. The table below shows the S.M.A.R.T. command codes that the drive uses.
