Configure the Drive J umpers
If s pecific jumper options are needed for your sys tem configuration, refer to the illustrations and definitions provided in this section.
SCSI ID J umper Settings
M axtor S CS I drives typically ship from the factory w ith jumpers set to S CS I ID 6, and termination power jumped.
SC S I ID 7 is us ually res erved for the SC S I hos t adapter.
Attention: The R ear J umper Option Connector is an OE M specific connector. M ost installations will never use the jumper options on this connector. Always configure the drive us ing the jumpers at the Front J um per Option Connector.

Handling Precautions
Allow the drive to reach room temperature before installing it in the computer.
Do not open the E SD bag until youÕ re ready to install the drive . H andle the drive by its sides . Do not touch the circuit board (electronics ).
Do not connect/disconnect any drive cables w hile your computer is turned on.
Do not drop, jar, or bump the drive.

Note: M axtor LVD SC S I drives do not support on-board termination. M axtor recommends the use of Active LVD terminators and 68-pin tw isted pair cabling.
SC S I host adapter manufacturers usually s upply proper cabling and termination w ith the purchase of an LVD S CS I hos t adapter.

Other J umper Settings
TP - T erm in ation P ow er ( 12 P in O pt io n Con nector) Pins 11-12 T ermination pow er ens ures that there is a suffic ient powe r level along the entire S CS I bus. It is re comme nded that the final device on the S CS I bus have the Termination Pow er jumper installed. A ll de vice s in betw een the hos t and final device typically have no jumper on Termination Powe r. Note that Termination Power is not the s ame as on-board termination, which this drive does not s upport.
S S - S tag ge r S pin Pins 13-14 For mos t c onfigurations this option is not utilized. M ost c urrent S CS I hos t adapters offe r a S tart Unit c ommand enable or dis able, w hich s upersedes the functionality of the SS jumper setting. W hen the Delay Spin (DS ) jumper is enabled on the drive, the S tart Unit command from the S CSI host adapter will s end S tart Unit commands to all device s on the bus at pre-determ ined intervals. This can help prevent powe r supply overload w hen running seve ral devices on the SCSI bus.
W P - Wr it e Prote ct io n Pins 11-12 B y factory default, the drive is s hipped with no jumper on thes e pins, and the drive can be w ritten to unles s protected by application softw are. W ith the pins jumped, the drive can be us ed as a re ad-only device. This feature preve nts accidental overwrites and is useful for frequently acc es sed archive s and reference files.
Fo rc e S E Ð Fo rce S ingle E nded O per ation Pins 17-18 B y factory de fault, the drive is s hipped with no jumper on thes e pins . W ith mos t s ystem configurations, it is not ne cessary to use this jumpe r. LVD drives are multi-mode capable. They will autom atically detect the presenc e of a single-ended bus and re vert to single-ended mode.
DS - De la y S pin Disable Delay S pin: N o jumper across pins 15-16 (factory
default). Dis abling Delay S pin allows the drive to spin up whe n the sys tem is powere d up.
Ena bl e Dela y S pin: J umper across pins 15-16 This se tting will prevent the drive from spinning up until it rec eives a S tart Unit com mand from a S CS I host adapter. M ost S CS I hos t adapters have the Start U nit command enabled by default in the host adapter BIO S. Enabling Delay Spin is only nec ess ary whe n you are starting m ultiple devices at powe r on.
S C S I ID Pin numbers 1-8 are typically referred to in pairs as A 0 (pins 1 and 2), A1 (3,4 ), A2 (5,6), A3 (7,8 ). The jumper pairs will allow configuration of S CS I ID' s 0 to 15. All S CS I devic es must have an individual ID on the S CS I bus (the re is no M aste r/Slave setting). S CSI ID 7 is usually res erved for the SC SI host adapter.
Fa ult LE D and Busy Out J um pe rs Typical installations do not require the use of the Fault L ED and B usy O ut jumpers. The B usy Out s ignal is us ually s upplied through the PC I bus to the P C m otherboard's B usy indicator LE D. If conne cting the Bus y Out jum per for a drive ins talled in an e xternal c ase, pleas e refer to the w iring docume ntation supplied by the manufac turer of the cas e. Connection of the Fault LE D is not rec ommended in internal or external ins tallations.

Attach the SCSI and Power Cables
If the M axtor S C S I drive is the only device attac hed to the S CS I adapter card, attach the drive at the end of the Ultra LV D/SE cable, farthes t from the S CS I adapter card. This connector has a beveled edge and w ill only fit one way. T hen attac h an exte rnal active LVD/SE S C S I term inator.

Attach a pow e r cable to the pow er connec tor on the hard drive. This connector is keyed and will only fit one way. Check all othe r cable connections before you turn on the computer.
Caut ion: Do not force or rock the connectors into their sockets on the hard drive. P ush them in s traight until they are s eated firmly.
