System Requirements
In order to install the USB hard drive, you must have all of the following:
• A computer running Windows 98, Windows Me, or Windows 2000 Professional operating systems (This USB hard drive is not compatible with Windows 95 or Windows NT)
• At least one unused USB 1.1 port (USB ports are available on most PCs and laptops manufactured after 1998; USB add-on boards are also readily available.)
• A CD-ROM drive for driver and software installation
• 16 to 32 Mbytes of RAM are required to run the bonus software.
About your USB hard drive
The DiskStor USB hard drive is a high-performance external hard drive from Seagate Technology. It allows you to add twenty or forty Gbytes of storage to your system in a matter of minutes. Unlike most hard drives, this USB hard drive has no jumpers to set and comes preformatted and partitioned. All you have to do is plug it in!

As an additional bonus, the drive comes with free soft­ware (on the Seagate USB Hard Drive Resource CD). To learn about this software, highlight About the Software on this CD in the CD browser menu. Then click the View button or launch the file readme.txt. To install the bonus software, highlight the program in the CD browser and click the Run button.
Handling precautions:
To avoid damaging your USB hard drive and possibly losing data, follow these precautions:
• Hard drives are extremely fragile. Do not drop or jar the drive.
• Operate the drive only in a cool, dry location.
• Always save your data before unplugging the USB hard drive’s power or USB connectors.
• Wait for the green drive activity light to go out before moving the drive, turning the drive off, or disconnecting the drive’s power or USB connectors.

This section describes how to connect the DiskStor USB
Installation
hard drive to a Windows-based computer and how to install the necessary USB drivers.
1. Boot up your computer
Your computer should be powered on and Windows should be fully loaded before you attach the drive.

2. Connect the power adapter
Make sure the drive is turned off. Attach the small, round power connector to the drive, as shown in Figure 1. Plug one end of the power cord into the transformer and then plug the other end into a wall socket or power strip.
3. Turn the drive on
Turn on the drive using the power switch on the back of the drive, as shown in Figure 2. Your computer should already be powered on.
