The Astral Series calorimeters listed in this manual have been certified for the European CE mark.
UNPACKING
The meter, calorimeter, and accessories are shipped in custom packing materials. All packing materials should be saved for future damage free shipments for calibration or repair.
ADAPTER/BATTERY
When using the Scientech supplied AC adapter/charger, the AI310 will operate with or without the optional battery installed. However, if the battery is installed, it must have a minimum charge of approximately 1 hour before the AI310 will operate on battery power alone.
The AI310 can be used with the optional rechargeable battery (part number 11640), which provides approximately 6 hours of usage before requiring recharging. To recharge the batteries, connect the charger to the power meter and the appropriate electrical outlet. Allow 1 to 3 hours for a full charge. Whenever the AC adapter is connected to both the AI310 and wall outlet, the battery is being charged. The AI310 can be powered by battery or wall plug power supply (or USB interface). If the battery is installed, it is charged whenever wall plug power (or USB power) is present. When running from wall plug, with optional battery installed, the battery annunciator in the LCD display will be on when the battery is being charged and off when the battery is fully charged. This annunciator may also be on when there is no battery installed. When operating on battery power alone, the annunciator will be off. When the battery approaches its end of charge, the annunciator will flash at a 1Hz rate for about two minutes. Then the annunciator will flash at a higher rate (2Hz) letting you know that in about another two minutes the AI310 will cease to function. In this event you should turn the power rocker switch to the OFF position, plug in the AC adapter, and turn the power rocker switch to ON. The AI310 will start in the normal way and the battery annunciator should be on indicating that the battery is being charged.
ASTRAL SERIES DETECTOR SPECIFICATIONS
This series consists of a handheld meter and a selection of thermal detectors. Astral series detectors all have memory integrated into the detectors, used to store calibration constants as well as other data such as integration time and date. Plug an Astral detector into the meter, and it’s ready for use. Without storing calibration data with the detector, you will need to manually enter the calibration data into the detector via the power meter. Also, if you were using multiple detectors with a single meter, then having calibration data in the detector also prevents errors if somebody forgets to input the detector’s calibration data into the meter.
Page 5
5
The Astral Series detectors are available in either surface or volume absorbing models with apertures of custom sizes or standard 8mm, 16mm, 25mm, 50mm, 100mm, and 200mm aperture models. The surface absorbing models are ideal for measuring continuous wave lasers while the volume absorbing models are well suited for pulsed lasers using either the watts mode or single pulse energy mode.

USING AI310 POWER METER WITH ASTRAL CALORIMETER
1. Turn On the Meter Power
Toggle the ON/OFF rocker switch, located on the top of the AI310, to the ON position. The power meter will immediately turn on with all LCD segments briefly, and then revert to the operational state last used. The AI310 will check for the presence of the sensor, and if the sensor is absent, the display will read “nodF” and the AI310 will continue checking every 15 seconds for 2 minutes. If, after the 2 minutes have elapsed, the sensor is still not found, then the AI310 will power itself down to a “sleep” mode, displaying “SLEP” in the LCD. If a sensor is subsequently plugged into the AI310, you must push any front panel button to awaken the AI310 and continue in normal operating mode.
If the AI310 is running from battery power, and if no button has been pressed or if power the reading is below 1% of full-scale for a period of time set by the user (as described in the timeout instructions below), The AI310 will also power itself down to a “sleep” mode, displaying “SLEP” in the LCD. The operating parameters of the SERIES S CALORIMETER are automatically loaded into the AI310 through the calorimeter’s intelligent connector. In normal operating mode the AI310 checks for a sensor every 15 seconds allowing for hot swapping of sensors with no user intervention required.
2. Connect the Calorimeter
A 3-meter cable with an intelligent connector is hard wired to the Astral Calorimeter. Plug the detector’s cable into the mating connector on the AI310.
Each detector has a 1/2" diameter mounting hole for installing the detector onto a mounting base assembly. Screw the mounting base post into one of the mounting holes in the body of the calorimeter. Optional mounting base assemblies are available for purchase from Scientech for mounting the detector/mounting base assembly to an optical bench.
3. Zero Button
Pressing the ZERO button will zero the display.
4. Zero the Analog Needle (does not apply to the AI310D)
Refer to Figure 3. The black slotted button located just below the display allows screwdriver adjustment to set the analog needle to zero. The needle adjustment should be adjusted to zero before connecting the detector.
5. Turn the Analog Needle On or Off (does not apply to the AI310D)
To turn the analog meter on or off, press and keep holding down the RANGE button. Then release the button after the meter scale appears or disappears. The analog meter scale will follow the selected range.

SCIENTECH CALIBRATION SERVICE
The Astral AI310 power meters and calorimeters are calibrated at Scientechs authorized service center and the calibration constants were provided with the detector.
Scientech detectors include a NIST traceable calibration certificate, to document that you are getting the most accurate laser measurement possible.
An optimum calibration of each detector is ensured by Scientech’s highly trained and skilled service team. Excessive energy or peak power density can damage a detector. Safe operating limits are specified in the detector specifications. If your calculated energy or peak power conditions exceed those specified for the model, optical attenuation may be used as a solution.
Electric substitution heater coils are available as an option that allows customer to perform their own field calibration. These electric heaters are only available for new detector purchases only by adding an “H” to the end of the detector part number when placing an order.
Scientech recommends that a complete calibration be performed annually to verify system accuracy. Please visit Scientech’s website at www.scientechinc.com to obtain an RMA (returned material authorization) number and complete the form noting that you are requesting calibration of your detector. You may also contact our Product Service Department at (800)525-0522 or (303)444-1361 or Fax (303)444-9229 or email inst@scientechinc.com. Be prepared to provide model number, serial number along with contact information. to arrange for a NIST traceable, factory calibration. Scientech calibrates the detector with its power meter for the same price.
