CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

1. CONTROL CIRCUIT

This set is equipped with feather-touch operation buttons and auto-reverse system, and the mechanism is composed of two motors and three plungers.

The control circuit comprises more than ten ICs and transistors which are mounted on IC 311 (AN 6251). This is a logic circuit.

The feature of the mechanism control is that many delay circuits (time constants) are used, so that the timing composition is very complicated.

(1) STATE HOLDING CIRCUIT UPON POWER COUT-OFF

The tape direction must be specified when turning on power or when the timer operates. In this unit, the operation of circuit switch (changeover of magnetic head, amplifier circuit) in foward (FWD) direction and reverse (REV) direction is effected by plunger (in the amplifier PCB), and re-input is fed to IC 311 by using this switch S1-6. Thus, the state before cutting off power is held.

(2) REWIND (REW)

By pressing REW button, an input is fed to REW-IN of IC311, and the output is delivered from REW-OUT. At this time STP-OUT becomes at "H" potential, and the motor starts to run. The output of REW-OUT is delayed (1) (0. 1sec.) by the portion of mechanism timing*, and is further delayed (2) (0.1 sec) by the portion of mechanism timing** when playing back or recording. This output is transmitted to both ends of the REW plunger through driver circit. Time constant pulse (1) generated in the one-short circuit of the start time is applied to F/R SOL (+) terminal, and the output is directly applied to REW SOL (-) terminal, so that the REW plunger starts to operated.

Eeven after expiration of time constant 1, the holding current flows, so that the plunger keeps the holding state.

When the plunger cuts off, the REW output ceases, so that the REW SOL (-) side driver is turned off.

Fig. 9

Page 10
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
(4) PAUSE (PAS)

By pressing PAS switch, an input is fed to PAS-IN of IC 311, and the output is delivered from PAS-OUT. The output of CAP-OUT retains the previous state. At the same time, STP-OUT is set to "H" level, and the motor starts to run. The PAS-OUT signal is delayed (6) (0.2 sec) by the portion of mechanism timing* through gate 7. This output is applied to the PLAY plunger through D 308, gate 10 to operated if.

The PAS–OUT signal also controls TAPE END–OUT through D331, gate 14.

PAS Switch → PAS - I N → Continued to ⓐ in REW operation PAS-OUT→ Continued to @ in FWD operation

(5) FORWARD PLAYBACK (FWD)

By pressing FWD switch, an input is fed to FWD–IN of IC 311, and the output is delivered from PLY– OUT. At this time, STP–OUT becomes "H" potential, and the motor starts to run.

The PLY-OUT output is delayed (6) (0.2 sec) to match with mechanism timing* through gate 7.

This output enters the driver circuit through D308, gate 10, and actuates the PLAY plunger by operating in the same procedure as in the rewinding circuit.

Simultaneously with the PLY-OUT output, the tape direction is indicated in CAP-OUT. When the indication of tape direction is changed, the output is delayed to match with the mechanism timing* by time constant 2 (0.3 sec). This output is applied to FF plunger to actuate it through gate 6, gate 4, and gate 3. When the direction indication is not changed, the PLY-OUT signal is delayed (6) (0.2 sec), and is delivered through gate 8 and gate 6.

The CAP-OUT output, after delay 5, controls the direction display together with the FF signal, and also

drives the plunger FWD for switch.

The REC-OUT signal, when at "H" potential, turns on PLAY switch through time constant 4. Besides PLAY MUTE is actuated through gate 11.

(6) REVERSE PLAYBACK (REV)

By pressing REV switch, an input is fed to REV-IN of IC 311. Thereafter, the circuit functions in the same manner as in FWD operation although the circuit composition differs.

\begin{array}{c} \operatorname{REV}_{\text{Swich}} \rightarrow \operatorname{REV} - \operatorname{IN} & \begin{array}{c} & \begin{array}{c} \text{Continued to} \ (\texttt{a}) \ in \ \text{FWD operation.} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ \\ & \end{array} \\ & \begin{array}{c} & \end{array} \\ & \end{array} \\ \\ & \end{array} \\ \\ & \end{array} \\ \\ & \end{array} \\ \\ \end{array} \\ \end{array}

(7) FORWARD RECORDING (REC. FWD) By pressing REC and FWD switches simultaneously, inputs are fed to REC-IN and FWD-IN of IC 311, and outputs are delivered from PLY-OUT and REC-OUT. At this time, STP-OUT becomes "H" potential, and the motor starts. The output of REC-OUT

lights up REC-LED of the record indicator. Outputs from REC switch and PLY-OUT are

delayed (7) (0.05 sec) to match with the mechanism timing* through gate 9. These outputs pass through gate 10, and actuate the PLAY plunger in the same circuit behavior as in the case of playback.

At this time, the foolproof switch in the mechanism operates, and when the foolproof pawl of cassette tape is broken, the switch is turned off, and an input is fed to REC–INHIBIT, so that IC 311 is set to PLAY mode. The CAP–OUT signal makes the same circuit action as in the case of playback.

The REC-OUT signal turns on REC OSC through time constant 5. Again, through gate 11 and gate 12, REC MUTE is actuated. When recording, by pushing REC MUTE switch, REC MUTE can be forced to be actuated through gate 13.

Page 11

(8) REVERSE RECORDING (REC. REV) By pressing REC and REV switches simultaneously, an input is frd to REC-IN of IC 311. Thereafter, the circuit action is almost similar to that of REC. FWD.

(9) OPERATION MODE SWITCH ACTION The operation mode switch is a holding type switch, consisting of three elements (-----------------------------------are wired in a prioritized circuit. Therefore, if two buttons are pressed at the same time, only one mode is made effective according to the order of priority. In " ---- " mode, the action is started, and a tape detection signal is issued at the end of tape, and gate D is opened by this signal (trigger) and D 316, so that an input is fed to STP-IN of IC 311, there by stopping the action. When all operation mode switches are set off the action is stopped similarly by means of D 317. Also in FF and REW, the action is stopped by D 318. In " " mode, the action is started, and upon reaching the tape end, when CAP-OUT signal passing through delay 8 and tape end signal passing through gate k for play mode judgment are issued. gate f is opened, then gate d is opened together with " " witch signal, so that an input is fed to REV-IN of IC 311, there by changing the direction. When a tape end signal is issued after this, gate b is opened by the tape end judgment signal of ". mode at gate e, and the action stops.

In ", mode, the action is started, and when a first tape end signal is issued, gate f or gate g of direction judgment is opened through gate k of play mode judgment. When gate f is opened, the tape direction is changed to forward, and when gate g is opened, the tape direction is set to reverse.

Besides, when gate g is opened, gate a is also opened, and REC action is stopped. When a second tape end signal is issued, the direction is changed similarly, from forward to reverse or vice versa, and REC action is stopped. When REC action stops, the mode is set to playback state, so that the playback operation continues thereafter.

The eject switch is closed when cassette lid is opened, thereby setting in STOP mode, and all actions are stopped.

(10) TIMER ACTION

The timer action indicates the tape direction within the time set by initial reset (2). The output from TMS-OUT passes through gate j and opens gate h or gate i according to direction switch, thereby indicating the tape direction.

After expiration of initial reset (1), (2) (power mute time), the setting is established by opening gates h, i in playback mode, or gates D320, h, i, D319 in record mode, according to the timer standby switch.

2. TAPE DETECTION CIRCUIT

When the tape is completely taken up in record/playback/ fast-fowarding mode, the unit automatically stops or inverts. This is because the tape end is detected and the mechanism is controlled. This tape end detection circuit is composed of four blocks.

(1) INFRARED DETECTION BLOCK

The tape ending part has the border to divide into the recordable magnetic band part and the nonmagnetic part. This border line is detected by a sensor, which is a mirror (112) composed by combining a near infrared ray emitting diode (LED 601) and a photo transistor (Q 601).

The infrared detecting method is as shown in Fig. 14. Figure 16 whows the infrared detection circuit, in which LED 601 and Q601 are said sensor. R473 is an input impedance resistor, and R472 and C411 constitute a low pass filter. R456 and R459 are resistors for voltage dividing, and R458 is a resistor for coupling. R455 and C406 make up a integrating circuit, and R457 is a resistor for coupling. IC402 (1) is a voltage comparator, of which resolution is about 10 mV.

Page 12

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION.

When signal (A) (with Q601 being OFF) as shon in (x) in Fig. 15 is applied from the sensor, noise shorter in pulse width is eliminated by the low pass filter composed of R472 and C411.

Point (b) which is the (+) side input to IC402 is kept at a lower potential than that at point (a) according to the resistance dividing due to R456 and R459.

Point (c) is roughly at the same potential as point (a) because the input impedance of IC402 (1) is much larger than the resistance of R455. Therefore, since point (c) is at higher potential than point (b), the output of IC402 (1) is a low potential, -5V. This is the stationary state.

When signal (B) as shown in (x) in Fig. 15 (with Q601 being ON, the applied voltage hikes suddenly and continuously) is applied, the potential at point (b) rises similarly according to the resistance dividing ratio due to R456 and C459, but the potential at point (c) climbs as being delayed by the integral time constant of R544 and C406. As a result, the potentials at points (b) and (c) are inverted, and the output of IC402 (1) heightens to +5V. Afterwards, since the potential at point (c) becomes higher than that at point (b), the output of IC402 (1) is inverted to become -5V again. When IN varies in the direction of low voltage, the relation between points (b) and (c) maintains the previous circuit, so that the output of IC 402 (1) remains un changed.

In this circuit, the reference potential is made from input potential, and the potential difference between point (a) and point (b) can be securely judged if larger than 10mV.

In addition, the detections is stable regardless of difference in the sensor sensitivity or transparency (coloring) of the leader tape.

Fig.15

Fig. 16

Page 13
(2) CONTROL BLOCK

The purpose of this circuit is to prevent malfunction by detecting the leader tape when starting to take up from the leader tape part of cassette tape, and to stop operation of infrared detection block in fast-

forwarding mode. In operation, voltage comparator IC402 (2) composes a Schmitt circuit together with resistors R467 and R468, and the control input is delayed (T1) by the integrating circuit composed of resistor R494 and capacitor C410 as shown by waveform (e) in Fig. 17. Diode D432 is, to the contrary, intended to quicken the discharge of capacitor C410. To resistor R467 is applied a DC voltage as a required comparison voltage. As shown in Fig. 17, when the control signal becomes high level in playback mode, the potential at point (e) begins to elevate, and when exceeding the comparison voltage (-) side, the output of IC402 (2) changes from high potential to low potential at point (f).

WAVEFORMS OF CONTROL BLOCK

Fig. 17

(3) REEL ROTATION DETECTION BLOCK

All cassette tapes do not have leader tape, and some leader tapes are not transparent or have deep color or symbol printings, which cannot be detected by infrared rays. To cope with such case, a reel rotation stop detection circuit is provided, and malfunction is prevented by combining with the infrared detection circuit. The reel rotation stop is detected by the sensor which is constituted by combining the magnet of rotary shaft of tape counter and magnetic sensor (SDME).

When a rotation detection signal as shown by Z in Fig.18 is applied from the sensor, the IC402 (3) functions as amplifier, and the input signal is amplified. As schown by waveform i in Fig 18, the waveform is rectified by diode D425, and capacitor C413 is charged. Resistor R479 is for discharge time constant, and determines, together with C413, the stop detection time (T2, approx. 2 sec).

The rectified DC voltage is applied to the voltage comparator of IC402 (4) through resistors R478 and R480.

IC402 (4) is constituted to a Schmitt circuit by virtue of resistors R481 and R482, and is designed to have a certain hysteresis. Since a comparison voltage of about 2 V is applied to resistor R482, the upper limit is more than 2V, while the lower limit is less than 1.5 V. Therefore, as shown in Fig 18, When rotation detection signal disappears, the output of IC402 (4) changes from low potential to high potential after lapse of time T2. That is, stopping of reel rotation is detected when the reel rotation (magnet rotation) ceases.

(4) TAPE DETECTION BLOCK

Change of output signal of IT402 (4) is used in the automatic reverse and automatic stop circuits as the tape end signal

When control signal is not fed to the control block, transistor Q427 is ON, and the input of Q426 is shortcircuited to the ground. Therefore, if an input is generated from the infrared detection block, transistor Q426 is not operated.

When control signal is applied, and when rotation detection signal is applied to input Z and potential at point k in Fig 16 is high, if an infrared detection signal is applied to input x after lapse of time T1, transistor Q426 is set ON by the output of comparator IC402 (1), and the potential at point k in Fig. 18 is set to low potential (less than 1.5V) for a certain period of time through capacitor C408. As a result, the comparator output IC402 (4) generates a single pulse.

Resistor R402 determines the discharge time of capacitor C408, so that the time constant may be adjusted to provide single pulse even if chattering occurs. The stop signal input and diode D426 applies a high potential of +5V while the tape is not running, being designed to keep the output of comparator IC 402 (4) at low potential.

    • a. Load with test tape (TMT-6161, etc. at NORMAL/TMT-6165, etc. at CrO2 and METAL), and set EQ switch to NORMAL/CrO2 and METAL position, and DOLBY switch to OFF position, then press play button.
    • b. With playback output at 1 kHz taken as 0 dB, make sure the playback output at 12.5 kHz is within -3 to +3 dB.
    • c. If the requirement above is not satisfied, repeat adjustment of head azimuth 1. above and other adjustment as required.

  • Load with test tape (AC 211, etc.), and set BIAS, EQ switches to NORMAL, and DOLBY switch to OFF, and input selector switch to record input side.
  • b. Feed input signal -25dB (1kHz) to record input terminal, and set the unit in record-pause state.
  • c. Turn INPUT LEVEL control knob until the monitor output becomes 0.775V.
  • d. Adjust SVR 707 and 807 until the level meter reads 0 VU.

5. CHECKING OF PEAK LEVEL INDICATOR LIGHTING

After the adjustment of item 4. raise input to -18dB, and make sure the peak level indicator lights up within the range of ±1dB with respect to this input level. ADJUSTMENT OF RECORD/PLAYBACK
